Mike Tyson is one of the greatest boxers of all time, undisputed heavyweight champion of the world...but he could of been number 1. Iron Mike Tyson was a naturally gifted boxer and a knockout artist, nurtured by Cus D'mato and Kevin Rooney, a million Mike Tyson knockouts are edged firmly in our memory. But where did it all go wrong? Tyson was was destroyed by the greed of those around him, the likes of Don King and Robin Givens, who only saw him for the money he had. He rose to the top and found his prime by beating Michael spinks, but then it all seemed to go wrong. That fateful night Mike Tyson lost to Buster Douglas is a night boxing fans will never forget, but his arrest and the following years Tyson fell into more and more problems in and out the ring, visible with his fight against Evander Holyfield where he bit his ear, and the shadow of a man Tyson looked when he fought Lennox Lewis. This is a documentary, and the full story...of the baddest man on the planet, Iron Mike Tyson's epic and tragic career.

Not sure he "never fulfilled his potential". Becoming the youngest ever heavyweight champion of the world and successfully defending the title many times is not too shabby. @@94462 But that's the whole point. As Mike himself has said, it's not just about physical ability. In an interview, he stated (and I agree with him) that what made Ali so great was his spirit, his refusal to be beaten (Mike said Ali would rather die than lose). You cannot separate physical from mental strength and ability. You need both. Neither is sufficient on its own.

It's not that Mike hit as hard as Foreman, or had as fast hands as Holmes, or as slick head movement as Fraizer, or the pressure of Holyfield, or the counter punching and ring IQ of Klitcho, or the chin of David Tua. It's that he had a perfect mix of all those characteristics in one package: Decent stamina, good accuracy, fast hands, solid power, great defence, great head movement, great footwork, great combinations, great chin, great aggression. Most knockout artists have only some of those features. For instance Foreman had incredible chin, power, and strength. But he lacked stamina and accuracy and he struggled against almost all fighters that could move well. Ernie Shavers had the hardest punch ever, but his stamina, chin, accuracy and defence was not the best(he did improve a lot throughout his career though, but at that point it was a little too late). So what Tyson so incredibly dangerous was that he had a decent amount of all the capabilities that makes a puncher effective.

mike had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the sport & he idolised old school heavyweight fighters like jack johnson, marciano, henry armstrong, dempsey, louis, ali etc ......he had no desire to be flamboyant or pretend to be anything other than a single-minded, no nonsense prize fighter & took every opportunity to honour all those that came before him. he disliked the razzamatazz, the sideshow culture, the bloated ppv media promotions....he just wanted to get into the ring, face his opponent & go to work. i have no doubt that tyson tells the truth when questioned about ped/steroid use......he never even used weights in his training, he admitted to using recreational drugs & using a fake penis for drug tests, but denied use of peds in his path to the world title....sure, he has in his older years, no doubt. if anyone thinks holyfield fought any of his HW bouts without the aid of steroids & other peds, they are crazy......evan fields is a propmpt.

4:07 - Mike Tyson sparred Lennox Lewis. That was a rough sparring where both men got punched bloody. Lewis got some nose blood and Tyson bled from his lipp, and Cus Damato knew they would both become world heavyweight champions and one day fight each-other for the crown. And Tyson lost twice in the 1984 Olympic Games trials for the US Boxing Team's heavyweight spot to Henry Tillman (who went on and won that division gold medal). Oh and Evander Holyfield with-out violance put Tyson at place during the Olympic camp when Tyson tried to cut-in on a pool game by bullying the other Olympic athletes, and Holyfield who was there as well calmly stood up to him and said "hey, get in line like all the rest of us". And Tyson, stunned, decided to walk away. So Tyson turned PRO after that since Tyson was never really made for the amatures. In general, Mike Tyson was a great attraction in boxing and deserves all his crediit for being a 2-time world champion and the youngest man ever to become a world heavyweight champion at incredible 20 years young. A legend. But Tyson was his own worst enemy in the end of the day. Tyson fired his original manager, fired his original trainer Kevin Rooney who was the ONLY man whp fully knew how to work with Tyson as he was a long-time student of the great Cus and appointed by the man as well. Tyson let his ego control him and let that ego commit violance, money wasting and create problems with the law here and there over his career. Don King was a darn crook, he have a lot of blood on his hands and deserve a lot of blame. But Tyson was the one who made all decisions as it was HIS ride and HIS career. Tyson after he lost to Evander Holyfield, a fight where his ego believed he would run over him (until the weight in when Tyson stared in Holyfield's eyes and saw this was a mistake) became even more adapt to only fight opponents he could easily KO and not offer any challange. Between 1998-2002 Tyson fought just that, while era rivals Evander Holyfield won a 4th world title and Lennox Lewis became a 3-time champion.

He also retired from boxing without sustaining any serious, life threatening injuries and is now a successful businessman and podcast host. Mike proved all his detractors wrong. Tyson could never come back from adversity, never got up from a knockdown to win a fight, phenomenal offensive skill but anyone who could weather the storm and punch back was a problem for him.

The first time tyson lost, it was indicative of his demise. tyson had a small window to peak & regardless of his incarceration, comebacks etc, he his peak had passed. tyson's style, success & ability was all based on youth & speed & there was no longevity expected by cus, rooney, atlas or anyone that guided him to his best.

@@dyschromotopia good old Mike Tyson "he was in his physical prime from 16-18. By the time he was 20 he was a shot old man. Even though at aged 60 he came back vs Roy Jones and actually looked pretty decent still physically

Don King was a huge reason for Tyson hitting rock bottom and Cus dying (who at least would have warned Tyson to be careful and aware of how sketchy he is)
