Had the great pleasure of meeting Bob in a pub in the Lake District, he was with his wife. Whilst we recognised him we made no reference & at the end of the evening he thanked us most graciously for treating him as an ordinary individual rather than as a TV star. We had a wonderful & highly enjoyable evening with this lovely man & his lady wife. You gave so much pleasure to so many people that you deserve to rest in peace Bob.

A very sad story regarding Bob, he was a very good comedy actor. He suffered the fate of many actors, being typecast. Very few people who stay in a series for any length of time then go on to greater and/or better things. There are a few exceptions (eg John Thaw, David Jason), but the vast majority tend to have their few years of fame, then disappear from view, being remembered for playing only one character.

Want i want to know is that when the acting/writing/director work dried up in the late 70s why didn't he seek to find other employment. he was still relatively young then 43/44 and from Reg Varney's autobiography he was a bit a financial/business minded sort of person he could have got a job in a bank or in insurance.
