Eddie probably is one of the 2 most famous guitarists in history, I think Diamond Dave probably deserves the most credit for Van Halen being discovered because he is positively the greatest frontman to take a stage and there was most likely thousands guitarists as good as Eddie who just didn't have Diamond Dave getting all the girls to come watch him and where there are girls, the guys will follow. A multi-instrumentalist can do that stuff in a studio, but not so much onstage, at least not without a backing track.

That's a good way to look at it as far as why things happened the way they did. Edward's a lot like Paul McCartney in that his perfectionism can grate on the other people in the band, and I can see how Ed would look at it like, "I had to teach Mike all his bass parts.", mostly because he wasn't letting Mike contribute any of his own ideas. 3 common factors - everyone was upset and miserable, everyone was talented, and everyone was taking too many drugs. Removing the drugs, they would of enjoyed many more years of success.
@HarryLime-ge6dc7 ай бұрын
From personal experience, you're so correct. Especially when you get into heavy hobbies like cocaine and opiates. Even if you're relatively disciplined enough to make your gigs on time, if you don't have drugs, you're not playing well, if you have drugs, you usually take too much and you're not playing well. And then stick 4 or 5 guys in a van together, with broken air conditioning in Florida in August. Or people are on different drugs/alcohol and criticizing the guys on the conflicting drugs. The irony is, the more successful you get, the more damage you do to yourself and each other. I was afraid I couldn't play if I cleaned up, and just the opposite happened. My musicianship was better than ever. It's unfortunate but it's not a new problem. First off, when and where you are going to work, everyone else is off work and heading there to party. And, especially in the lower rungs of the entertainment industry, playing on stage is the high point of your day, the rest of your day/evening can be boring, lonely, and depressing (especially if you're trying to keep a relationship together and don't want to 'socialize' with the wonderfully charming women you often meet. And ironically, the most destructive vice I experienced dealing with in a band was alcohol. But regardless of the poison, musicians have been familiar the struggles of addiction way back when the term "rockin' and rollin' meant something much different than it came to mean. There's really nothing new under the sun. Except the Internet...

@2216sammy I have heard other musicians verify that Mikey struggled. It just sucks that Eddie felt the need to publicly embarrass him. Micheal seems like such a gentle soul. Dude can sing as good as any front man of the era and the back up vocals was part of what made Van Halan so awesome. I often wonder why Mike didn't front. Maybe he didn't have the look or couldn't play Bass and sing at the same time. Lita Ford said she struggled with singing and playing guitar at the same time. She had to break the habit of looking down at her instrument before she went solo.

Don't blame a riff between Axl and Slash for the problems with G&R. I drove my wife two hours to Toronto to see them at Exhibition Stadium in 1990. Axl was 2-1/2 hours late then he was terrible. The sound guy turned up Slash and turned down Axl so his roasted and hungover sound didn't hurt the sound too much but there was only so much they could do. Because of Axl it was the worst concert I ever saw by an A-list band. I paid $120 for 2 tickets and that was a lot of money back then. We were furious. We drove 4 hours round trip for this?
