Eddie probably is one of the 2 most famous guitarists in history, I think Diamond Dave probably deserves the most credit for Van Halen being discovered because he is positively the greatest frontman to take a stage and there was most likely thousands guitarists as good as Eddie who just didn't have Diamond Dave getting all the girls to come watch him and where there are girls, the guys will follow. I guess I was 10 when Dave left so all I got to see were videos and VHS concerts. Sammy said Dave wasn't worth a fuck but Dave always did his job, didn't he? I can't imagine Dave, in the cocaine decade of the '80's giving a lackluster performance. You commented that Dave did Van Halen wrong, and all I remember from back then was how they'd talk shit on each other in Circus and the rest of those magazines so can you please fill me in on what you meant by Dave did them dirty? Those play a part in a lot of cases....but sometimes, people just can't get along. Having been in my share of bands...good and bad....I can agree with the comment once made around me that "bands are like marriage without the sex" and there's a lot to that. You have to put up with each other's quirks....a lot. You have to depend on each other...a lot. You also have different visions of what you are, what you want, and what you intend the band to be. Mix all those things with all the things you mentioned with pressure and that, I'd say is the root of all bandmate issues.

@@nikkibest5010Oftentimes, those two go hand-in-hand, unfortunately. It’s a strange relationship: A person can’t have an on-stage band without bandmates, but the writer (oftentimes the lead singer) wants the song to sound a certain way. A multi-instrumentalist can do that stuff in a studio, but not so much onstage, at least not without a backing track.

That's a good way to look at it as far as why things happened the way they did. Edward's a lot like Paul McCartney in that his perfectionism can grate on the other people in the band, and I can see how Ed would look at it like, "I had to teach Mike all his bass parts.", mostly because he wasn't letting Mike contribute any of his own ideas. Ed did write the songs, so he's within his rights to operate that way, but it's not good for team-building.

3 common factors - everyone was upset and miserable, everyone was talented, and everyone was taking too many drugs. Removing the drugs, they would of enjoyed many more years of success.
@HarryLime-ge6dc
@HarryLime-ge6dc 7 ай бұрын
From personal experience, you're so correct. Especially when you get into heavy hobbies like cocaine and opiates. Even if you're relatively disciplined enough to make your gigs on time, if you don't have drugs, you're not playing well, if you have drugs, you usually take too much and you're not playing well. And then stick 4 or 5 guys in a van together, with broken air conditioning in Florida in August. Or people are on different drugs/alcohol and criticizing the guys on the conflicting drugs. The irony is, the more successful you get, the more damage you do to yourself and each other. I was afraid I couldn't play if I cleaned up, and just the opposite happened. My musicianship was better than ever. It's unfortunate but it's not a new problem. First off, when and where you are going to work, everyone else is off work and heading there to party. And, especially in the lower rungs of the entertainment industry, playing on stage is the high point of your day, the rest of your day/evening can be boring, lonely, and depressing (especially if you're trying to keep a relationship together and don't want to 'socialize' with the wonderfully charming women you often meet. And ironically, the most destructive vice I experienced dealing with in a band was alcohol. But regardless of the poison, musicians have been familiar the struggles of addiction way back when the term "rockin' and rollin' meant something much different than it came to mean. There's really nothing new under the sun. Except the Internet...

Except when you realize that Simmons and Stanley for example are drug and alcohol free and are a massive pain in the ass, they were responsible for most of the problems. Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull never took drugs either but drove off literally every band member with his behaviour. Do we need to talk about Morissey?

Dude can sing as good as any front man of the era and the back up vocals was part of what made Van Halan so awesome. I often wonder why Mike didn't front. Maybe he didn't have the look or couldn't play Bass and sing at the same time. Lita Ford said she struggled with singing and playing guitar at the same time. Ever heard of the band Norma Jean? They’re a hardcore band with 9 studio albums over 24 years. The band has been a revolving door of musicians with none of the original players that it started with. But honestly, it keeps them fresh… kinda. They still bring the noise that we’d expect to every album … at times. I still love it when we get that Mighty Norma Jean Noise!

I can't imagine anything more lame than being buried in a KISS casket. Even a Donald Duck casket would be at least fun. Having Gene Simmons there looking at the deceased for eternity must be a punishment worse than Hell.

@2216sammy Gene Simmons probably after Darrell Abbott's estate for royalties for as long as the casket is in use 😂🤣

I've never heard of professional band members saying that the other members literally forgot how to play chords or did not play their instruments at all. Awesome.

Not surprisingly, most of these feuds were provoked by narcissists: Roth, Mustaine, Rose, Tyler... Roger Waters and Liam Gallagher would also fit the bill perfectly.
