In the end, when they show the spirits of the siblings looking on to city... that is the ‘grave’ of the fireflies. The city is the grave of all the people and the horrors that happened in the war. Why this things even happened ? Just think! Why even war happens . If a little bit of humanity is still left then please stop fighting.. for god's sake... Stop fighting and make world's peace continue forever .... Rest in peace those who sacrificed their lives.... These youth lived off the megabooming industry of the 60's/70's and early 80's,taking everything for granted while "believing" they where "invincible". This is what I feel/think about the transposition to the past when the movie came out. Greetings
@lolface-sp3hl Жыл бұрын
It has to do with the economic growth Japan had in the 70/80's that swept away the scars and horrors of the war. People were beginning to forget. So the end scene with Setsuko and Seita on the bench looking at the modern city implies something like: "You have forgotten us, yet you live on our grave" It's a time and place mostly forgotten in history, existing only in the minds of those who were there to remember it. People who are now living there normal lives, forgetting the tragedies that have come before. That's kind of the deeper meaning behind that scene. It's the same for the title: Grave of the Fireflies. The cities that were bombed (the graves) and the people that died (the fireflies). Setsuko compared her mother to a firefly when she asked "Why do fireflies have to die so soon?". Infact all the fireflies in the scenes were meant to represent the victims of the war and bombings. This movie is so heartbreaking 😭

You can really feel the guilt experienced by the author through this film: the main character is presented as an almost selfless hero while making childish decisions that are even shown to be the right ones. It’s almost like it’s being told by the main character at the age they are in the story, with selfish decisions (such as leaving their aunts house and idealistically believing that he could independently solve all of their problems) being presented as the only solution. in reality, it’s an avoidable situation that the two kids should never have been put into in the first place, which truly brings home the impact and loneliness that war brings.

It wasn't just the aunt, it was the uncle and cousin too. The aunt was just around them more. Regardless, i do understand their position though. By 1945 they'd have been on ever decreasing rationing for 3 years as the U.S. and Allies had continually pushed back Japanese forces at every engagement. Then there was the bombings. By 1945 the Japanese mainland had been regularly bombed every few days for over a year. The issue i have with the aunt is that despite all that, Seita was still a boy. Even if he was 'culturally' supposed to be a man at 13 or 14. As the adults, it was required of them to understand the situation better. Even if they didn't want to.

Takahata Isao said in the interview with back in 1988 may, that aunt's treatment wasn't typically unfair or harsh considering the time they were living in. Seita's pride and rebellious teen attitude killed him and his sister. Isao wanted viewers to criticize Seita rather then to sympathize. from original interview : 「あの時代、未亡人のいうことぐらい特に冷酷でもなんでもなかった。

this was exactly what the farmer said to seita, that he cant survive outsde the system during war and should have swallowed his pride and apologize, the film broke a lot of cultural beliefs and gives perception of human in life. but i will disagree with you about what killed seita and setsuko, seita died because hes a lazy ass guy who doesnt want to work or be more responsible for the sake of his sister, he wanted an easy carefree life

DirtiestHaRRy I actually hated him throughout the movie but then at the end I realize that he was just a child and I know kids at his own age wouldn’t done any better. At least seito did his best to provide for his sister but it wasn’t enough bc he’s just a child

@@KuyaDeo Yeah but let's not forget that he is only 14 and can't make rational decisions yet he thought that they were going to survive plus the aunt was taking some of his food to share with the family so maybe he thought he had a better chance of survival if he took the food all to himself and his sister but he didn't measure things right when he did that and they consumed it all in the first day plus he wasn't ready for any of this to happen it was all too sudden so he didn't know the possible consequences of his actions

I'm 36 years old with three kids and this movie fucking destroyed me. The thing that really gets me as a parent is that the war left the children just... lost. We tell ourselves that we will do anything, we'd kill, we'd steal, we'd die for our kids, but what if you don't even get a chance to do that? Combat or natural disaster can just snatch you away from them before they're ready to fend for themselves. The poor children were way too young to stand on their own, clueless to the reality that they weren't just hungry, they were dying from their hunger. When the little sister thanks her brother and then just lays there motionless, that's it. The rest of the movie was viewed behind a wall of water.

This is indifference is quite common. Even amidst the chaos the world is going through today with the virus, people simply stockpile food when they know daily wage earning people won't be able to and will starve to death. There's very few who only take what they need and leave the rest to others. So many children die like this everyday, but we live such privileged lives that we hardly ever witness it.
@river66344 жыл бұрын
Sad as it is, not everyone in life can survive through disaster. When it comes down to it, everyone will protect and provide for their families regardless of whether or not it causes suffering or death for others. Perhaps you aren't a parent, but I do not believe for a moment that any parent could ever watch their own child strave to death and not willingly beg, steal, murder and do whatever they need to to feed their children.

It is true that they would have survived longer had they remained with the aunt. But I think it was only a matter of time before shxt hit the fan. And seita was innocent, they wanted to live free like fireflies and had to die like them. The world rewards cunning and the evil not the innocent who would be happy with a little. If you can wish that it was you instead of setsuko who died, you have a heart.

Sometimes when the suffering is far too intense, as in times of war, death is probably more liberating than survival. During this period, everyone acts for themselves. No one will think of others, and it is the law of survival that will count more than altruism. Selfishness is almost pushed to its limit. Surviving war is not really luck ... All those who will not be able to survive will be left behind. It's pretty crazy anyway because they're humans too. They too have a life behind them. But a choice will have to be made: help or survive. Here then, comes to me all that happened with the aunt: at the beginning, she had welcomed her nephew and her niece normally, but we already felt that it pissed him off to keep them. And the more time passes, the more his true face shows. But is it the context of the war that forces her to be heartless, or was she already like that? Everything suggests that she already was, given that Setsuko does not want to go see her ... I guess the 2 combined. Seita was so brave to do everything possible for her sister that he has all my respect. Unfortunately, they, who were a simple child, did not have the life they deserved as a child. Seita had to take on far too great responsibilities despite her young age and face the harsh reality of war, as Setsuko was far too "child" for such a brutal period ... They were born at the wrong time. Death, moreover, is part of life. And without death, life would have no evolution. One cannot live without the other, because removing death for example, and life would no longer adapt, no longer progress, and no longer have any meaning. Which would inevitably lead to our loss. Life feeds on its own death to become stronger. The end scene is so meaningful! So symbolic! Sad, but great art! I don't think I was so touched seeing an animated film at this point.

After, watching this video I remembered an incident in 7th grade. I and some other students from our class were talking about some topic, then a girl from our class said to me and my best friend that boys don't have a heart and they don't have emotions and they never cry. So, I just wanna say that boys do have a heart, feel down, and cry when someone special leaves us and when we watch sad movies like 5 feet apart, fault in our stars. And when our favorite people like Kobe Bryant, Chadwick Boseman, Stan Lee, SSR, and Imran Khan die.

Whenever I am asked what my favourite Ghibli film is, I always say Grave Of The Fireflies. No one seems to understand why I love it so much, they think it's just a incredibly sad story and nothing more. But to me, this movie is a masterpiece of a story. It invokes emotions from me that can only be felt when this movie is mentioned or watched, and it is the film that breaks me everytime I watch it. As someone who is also a bit of a history nerd, I also love that part of the movie as well. Just a beautiful movie all around, horribly depressing, but it's a masterpiece.

I just wondering, even through Seita should just stay with his aunt add accept her harsh living condition. But who to say that Seita and Setsuko would still be alive. Even if Seita just decided to go back to living with his aunt and accept her rules, who to say that she would welcome them back and take care of them again. It’s sort of hard enough for her to look after her own family, as well feeding and give them other need their might need. Which no fault of her, I mean Seita could find a job to support both him and his sister. But what type of jobs would for a 16-year-old, during the time of the war. I doubt that Setsuko would still be alive if both Seita and Setsuko stay with their aunt. Or whether Setsuko would ever die from salvation, I mean who knows what would’ve happened if he did stayed and never left. Also, I know that the aunt didn’t make them leave. But she didn’t seem to try to convince them to stay or think about Setsuko well-being. Whether if she care for them, she seem just let go and never try to stop him.

I love the movie, don't get me wrong but I just don't get why he didn't withdraw all the money they had when moving out of her aunt's house. Am I the only one who noticed this? He clearly made the withdrawal when his sister was on the brink of death, why not do this after the doctor's diagnosis? I would rather have spent it all on food then have to spend it on a casket.
@koala37043 жыл бұрын
I bet he hadn't realized how close his sister's death was approaching. Without that realization, he might've thought he still should spend money little by little because at that point they had no way to get any more money coming in. We maybe can think that way because we know what's coming in the end, and we can take a step back and see things objectively, not being in the situation.
@shivanimahida55443 жыл бұрын
I think you could only withdraw so much in a certain given time during the war due to rations.
@miffybb668211 ай бұрын
In the end i thought that too but its displays seitas childlike innocence in the war. He isnt mature enough to see the full reality of whats going on. He has high hopes in the beginning of the movie bc he has japanese pride and faith that his father will win. But reality kicks in towards the end of the movie and he begins to learn the impending doom awaiting him and his sister. Also when you experience war you never really know how long it will last so you save your rations and wealth as much as you can. I truly dont think seita realized how much trouble setzuko was in until it was too late.
