I know this is late, just felt like sharing that Drew’s brother Reed was my English teacher for a couple of years, and he talked about his brother extremely fondly. He’s why I even know about Lip Service. Honestly one of the realest teachers I’ve ever had in my life

I first bought clothes from Drew when he was still making them in the wearhouse. I got hired at the Lip Service on Melrose in 89 or 90, but I missed my first day, because of a hangover.

I met Drew back in 1981. He was part of the original punk rock scene in LA. I wasn't shocked that he ended up in fashion, because he was way ahead of most of us back then. I last saw him on a flight from LA to NYC in the later 1990s.

This video was really good, too!!! Just an FYI, the Widow brand was purchased by Dolls Kill a few years back and the photos shown in the video are Dolls Kill pieces. The original Widow brand was higher quality and much more unique. Dolls Kill just recycles the same styles for Widow that they use in all their brands, but use different colors and patterns. Plus the quality SUCKS. Love your message on sustainability! I have been solely buying secondhand (except for socks and undies, haha) for at least one year now and it's far better than buying new clothes everyone else is wearing that come from a Chinese sweatshop.

I got more informations on this and now I can tell that Drew's family handed the business to someone that seemed trustworthy and was in fact not So much drama The worst thing is that Drew was really down because of money problem, he cared about his employees and shared his wealth without any hesitation, he was generous and he felt like he failed them when the money problem came up. And now lip service is going strong... Truly sad

I didn't know there was a sad story behind why they dwindled, I remember when they began. Thank you for these histories, they bring back a lot of memories. I about peed myself over that silver metallic cyber dress! NaNa's on Haight St sold a lot of amazing boots, lots of platforms, real leather but pricey. I bought a pair of greasy leather lineman boots there in 1991 or so that I wore almost every day until 2016 when my cat pissed on them and I couldn't save them even with enzymes. Leather breathes and lasts a lifetime if taken care of so it's worth every penny. Oh god, I miss having all these cool stores, you're bringing up names I haven't heard since the mid 90s, it hurts. Even Hot Topic was cool at first when it just sold socks and stuff, I wish I had checked it out.

I just randomly stumbled upon this video, I first met Drew in the very early '80s, he actually lived with me for a while, this was before lip service. But we stayed friends for the rest of his life. In fact, there's a photo in this video that I shared on my own social media, I was kind of shocked to see it here lol. (I was not asked) I'm in the photo with him, but have been cropped out 😆 Anyways, something that's not mentioned is that Drew actually sold the business prior to his very tragic passing. He continued on as I think CFO or something like this, but it was a huge blow. I can't imagine him in such a down state, but crucifix did a show in LA just prior to his passing, and Drew came to the show. They all had a really good talk, and I wish I had been there. I know he was very sad, and a lot of that had to do with the situation with lip service. They had some truly amazing clothes, but it was the not very size inclusive. Drew was the fitting model for their pants, and he had a size 28 waist. Even though I was not a big person at the time, I had a hard time fitting into some of their stuff lol! It was absolutely tiny. Anyways, I miss Drew, he was an amazing, complicated, endearing person. זכרונו לברכה

Late to the party here lol..but I suspect you are correct. Just last week for hahaha I peeked the Lip Service site,and they added a new version of webutant lace stuff..upon closer inspection of the pics,um....that is the exact same cheap lace dolls kill recently used 2 yrs ago for their widow web lace stuff. The EXACT fkn lace😢 the cuts and look of the pieces even look like widow. Very sus.🤨

Re: your definition, the term "lipservice" was also used by prostitutes on their lists of services adverts and price lists, ie oral pleasuring, I remember from the '70's at least, which I always took to be the decadent humour motive behind the brands name.
