For joke idea inspiration Titanfall is like the Dark souls of FPS games. Also to help with research Titanfall has a mod that kinda saved the game called Northstar its PC only. Theres so much to talk about with titanfall. Bro I feel awful for the people who didn’t get to experience Medal of Honor. It is a timeless stream of amazing games. Back in the day i remember playing all of them and exact missions from them as well. Amazing games, EA has went to shit but I thank them for the experience that was, Medal of Honor. Rising sun(co-op), frontline, and European assault were all S tier. No one had ever done Pearl Harbor, but goddamn did they do it right.

I also really enjoyed mw2019. there was a lot of "give me money" going on, but ignoring that i think they put an amazing amount of effort into attention to detail and listening to the players.

For those of you not alive yet, CoD1's competitive scene was amazing. It was community-led, and was a great alternative to the counterstrike source scene. There were community leagues and a very healthy irc server where you could find a team, scrimmage, be a ringer, join a competitive PUG, and just prepare for the various tournaments that existed. CAL league in particular had a progression system where you could perform well in the open league, and advance upwards towards the invite league where all the best players played. When CoD4 came out, and the industry realized it could generate a lot of profits off of pub gamers, they catered to console public players, and the competitive PC scene died. It became a competitive console game later during the e-sports craze, but the developers took control of the entire competitive experience and it was not even close to community-led e-sports experience of the past in terms of openness (everyone could join and participate in the same leagues as the "pros"), balancing (community led balancing competitive mods), and overall freedom, if that makes sense. I truly wish all generations of gamers could have experienced this community-led e-sports experience that is now obsolete/dead.

I think the multiplayer in cod has always been very overrated, but then again, a very low skill ceiling means its accessible to a wide audience and is probably the only fps multiplayer a lot of people got exposed too. The campaigns really put blockbuster action you'd expect from a movie into a video game form. That core of easy gameplay and blockbuster action hasn't changed, there's just modern predatory monetisation & player engagement & retention strategies stapled onto the formula.

It was a golden era because all the forces came together to make it so. For years after I would wonder why they could not recapture that magic and now I realise it was a time in history. We can not have the same lobby chats today because of big brother censorship bans. We could not have that new experience of going online with friends because we’ve been there before. And for gameplay well it’s the same formula we have played over and over. Call of Duty as a great game today is not possible.
