The Tragic Truth About The Little Rascals Is So Sad

The "Little Rascals" were some of Hollywood’s first child stars, and sadly, many of them suffered the stereotypical troubles we associate with child stars today. The children were the stars of the "Our Gang" shorts, which were created by producer Hal Roach and ran from 1922 to 1944. The shorts showed a world where children of different races were friends without concern, even if they did sadly lean into stereotypes of the day. The treatment the Black actors faced was only one tragic thing about the troupe, so let’s take a look at the tragic truth about the "Little Rascals."

@@jayontoptikofan689 when I was a kid I was traveling with my mother to Myrtle Beach and it was during their black bike week. It was the most terrifying thing that I had ever seen in my life. I undid my seatbelt so I could lay on the floor with my head down and hands over my ears until we finally made it to the hotel. My mother told me later on there were three different bike wrecks where the riders and passengers died on scene and two different crime scenes of shoot outs that also had fatalities.

I showed my 13yr old son a few episodes of Our Gang over the past few nights. First thing he asked me was "Weren't the schools segregated back in those days?" I said I know it was law in the 40's into the 60's. Maybe this predates that law. Interesting knowing that MGM made the decision to be bold in that time! I loved this show as a kid, and the comedy holds strong today! As far as the tragic untimely deaths of the former actors, well, what can you really say? Child stars rarely enter into adulthood unscathed or without tragedy. Many of the pitfalls of being a star in the past can be avoided nowadays since the bad things have been documented and chronicled. And even with that, some people still get taken advantage of. I'm just glad that the episodes can still be viewed and enjoyed all these years later!

Willie Mae Taylor played Buckwheat in 1933, and I believe Stymie's real life sister Carlena played her once. Billie Thomas was already playing various minor roles, and assumed the role of the still-female Buckwheat in 1934. Buckwheat was first depicted as a boy in the movie "General Spanky" and on Our Gang starting with the legendary Romeo & Juliet short ("My Homeo!) The kids all called him "Bucky" or just "Buck" in real life.

I remember the 20/20 episode about Bill English claiming to be the original Buckwheat and I had a strange feeling that he was an imposter. Kind of makes you wonder how many of those other 20/20 episodes were even true! I think it was the "Whatever Happened to...? segment at the end of the show.

I so upset hearing that all of them didn't really do well and I can't believe that the show was judged racist. When I was about 6 or 7 I watched them all the 5ime not once did I think about black or white. Just thought it was kids being kids. A shame adults tried to ruin it.

The "baby" that wasn't shown, was the father of my husbands best friend growing up. He was Harold Lloyd's brother or nephew don't recall. Never met him myself. He grew up to be a real jerk sadly. Abuser and his kids did badly too. Seems like the whole group had a tragic end. Harold Lloyd gave his estate to the Shriners upsetting his nephews. They would have just drank it up.

I used to watch this show as a little kid after my Dad passed away I found a bunch of pictures they were in Atlantic City New Jersey and it was pictures of my dad and his two cousins pictures with Pete the Dog and some of the our gang members it was dated 1933 and it had their names underneath each individual person..So cool.. I always think about putting them in a frame and keeping them in perfect condition but I find myself doing other projects but to me these pictures are priceless hopefully my kids one day will appreciate them and not throw them in the trash..🤔🔥🤳

Alright, I must correct you on Carl Switzer and also point out something regarding a director who worked with the kids for a couple years. Carl Switzer had a business that he ran on his own. His clients were major stars at the time. Carl was well liked. Carl averaged to work in films 2 for every year after Our Gang. It's not because he was an asshole, it's tbecause he preferred to work outdoors with his business as a hunting guide and dog breeder. He missed out on roles because of this. As for him being a bully is a bit of an exaggeration when you consider that Spanky almost set a man and studio on fire when he gave the man, who happened to be Switzer's father Fred Switzer, a hot foot. Fred had a wooden leg as a result of a farming accident. The night he was murdered he was trying to leave when Bud Stilts shot him. Keep in mind that Stiltz went for his gun when Carl was let in the house. Stiltz got away with his crime because the neighbor was a cop. He wanted to protect Rita Corrigan and her kids for some reason and influenced the inquest determination. The only true witness who saw it all to down was told to leave town until everything calmed down. Carl was well liked and even celebrated by the people of the town called Pretty Prairie in Kansas while he was living there with his wife and son. Now, regarding a director who worked with these kids, the director was named Gus Meins. He was a pedophile. How many of those kids were molested during his time at Roach studios?

Our Gang Little Rascals is one of the unfortunate examples that shows the reality of how, if you take a group of kids that large and follow their lives for 70+ years, you're going to have tragedies in there. It's an unfortunate reality we don't like to think about, but most people don't die as a 90 year old warm in their bed having lived a fairy tale life. It's not much different from following a graduating class of the same size for 70+ years. It's also an example of how the word "tragedy" can sometimes be what you make it. One of the best examples being Spanky. George McFarland is often used as an example of what is called "The Little Rascals Curse". However, if you dig deep into his life, he actually had a pretty decent life many folks would love to live. He did die a bit earlier than people in this day and age would like to where the average life expectancy is in the 70s. But when you think about it, dying from a heart attack at age 65; particularly when the individual was an overweight male, wasn't much of an atypical death of somebody born in 1928. That age was actually past the life expectancy of his time. I wouldn't call that a premature or a tragic death. I would call that a fairly normal death for his time period and would also say he did a very good job making a life he truly enjoyed for himself before it was over. Doesn't sound like a tragic life to me, though he is often portrayed as having one.

Great show when I was a little kid, it shows kids being "Little Rascals" and nothing more. No race, no color, no religion, no accents but I'm sure in the world of "PC" today this show would probably be canceled and banned before the first episode aired.
