The Trailblazing Woman Behind the SNP's First Great Victory (1967)

On 16 November 1967, ITN reported from Westminster as Winifred "Winnie" Ewing, the new Member of Parliament for the Scottish constituency of Hamilton, arrived to take her seat in the House of Commons. A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), Ewing's surprise victory in the Hamilton by-election represented a significant landmark in the history of Scottish nationalism. Robert McIntyre, the only SNP politician to reach Westminster before Ewing, was elected under unusual wartime conditions, and kept his seat for just three months. Ewing's victory caused an immediate rise in support for the SNP across Scotland and, in the longer-term, is thought to have significantly influenced the decision by Labour prime minister Harold Wilson to establish the Kilbrandon Commission, a body tasked with examining the question of political devolution in the United Kingdom.
