The "Via Rail" service between Niagara Falls, Ontario and Toronto was actually the beginning/end of Amtrak's New York City / Toronto service on the Maple Leaf. When the train was in Ontario, it was operated by a Via Rail crew but all of the equipment was Amtrak's.

@TransportGallery which GO Line do you take to Downtown? I take the Stoufville Line from my home Kennedy GO or I take a bus down to Eglinton GO and take the Lakeshore East Line. I wonder if you have been on any other GO Line. I know I have been on every single GO Line except for the Richmond Hill and Kitchner unless the UP Express Counts.
@miguel.adv_3 жыл бұрын
@@amaan-aliladak I would usually take the Richmond Hill or Stouffville Line. I rly want to ride and fan more GO transit later on
@amaan-aliladak3 жыл бұрын
@@miguel.adv_ Perhaps you can take the Kitchener Line to London for $30. That's how much it costs to go just ONE WAY Adult fare from Downtown to London, Ontario. It's an extra $2.50 from what it used to cost to ride the UP Express from Union to Pearson International when premier Kathleen Wynn Built it. I am hoping with this Trudeau coming back, he wakes up to smell the Coffee and invest's in more Transit for Ontario by providing more routes to Pearson International because many people land here at Pearson than any other International Airport in Canada. Sorry, Mike, but you don't claim Top Spot for Busiest International Aiport in Canada.

Wasn’t mentioned here but the bi level concept was pioneered by GO transit. It is now used all over the world based on GO’s own idea. They still use many of the first bi-level cars on the system today.
@sarahb77203 жыл бұрын
Having grown up with GO trains I really appreciated the insight. Did not know those details about it. Very interesting. It was so empty when you were on it. If you go during rushhour it is much busier. Also, during that time the upper level is a quiet zone. This makes great a bribe when taking kids to the R.O.M. They always want to ride in the top but they only can if they are quiet. On the ride home we look for the accessible car. The reason being that this is where they announce the stop locations from. Which is also fun for the kids and gives them the chance to ask questions. Love Niagara Falls. Thanks for sharing this video.

The WEGO buses are great to get around Niagara Falls. Especially to the attractions that are outside the tourist area. And the Green Line will take you from the train/bus station right to the Table Rock Visitor Centre. There are a couple of stops along the way that will let you off a short walk from the hotels near Casino Niagara and Clifton Hill and you can take the Inclined Railway to the hotels on the Fallsview Casino side. Probably not ideal if you're a family with kids and a lot of luggage, but if you're a couple or traveling alone with a small rolling bag or a backpack it's great...and cheaper than a taxi. It's also worth mentioning that most of the hotels charge a lot for on site parking, so if you can get to Niagara on the train or train and bus combo you're going to save a considerable amount of money if you're staying for a few days. Great video, my girlfriend and I LOVE going to The Falls. We make a trip there part of any trip we take to Ontario.

Well Mike it's great to see you travelling again away from your usual haunts around Vancouver and British Columbia. I long for the day to get outa Melbourne again. In 1995 I had the pleasure of viewing Niagara Falls AND Toronto's CN Tower and rail terminal from 30000 feet on a beautiful fall day during a flight from Denver to Boston. Thanks for sharing your ground level experience and I'm looking forward to your ongoing travels across your beautiful country by ViaRail. As an aside, you probably have heard that the earth moved for me and a fairly large area of southeastern Australia on Wednesday last. Only my second shaky earth experience of any significance and, apart from adrenaline rush, no harm done and, fortunately, no deaths or injuries reported. The wall of a hamburger joint came down in one of Melbourne's inner suburbs but no one was close by due to our lockdown. Cheers from Michael.

1. Vancouver's own West Coast Express - about which you've never done a video, BTW - uses cars very similar to those GO uses. One car of each WCX train used to have a coffee bar - nice for a good "cuppa cap" in the Big V - but those disappeared some time before COVID. GO developed the cars in the 1970s because they needed more capacity than the old single-level cars offered. They were built at Thunder Bay by, successively, Hawker Siddeley Canada, CanCar Rail-UTDC, Bombardier, and now Alstom. 2. Vancouver has double-deck buses very similar to those GO uses, as does Ottawa. 3. I was on the "Maid of the Mist" once, on my own visit to Niagara Falls in 2010. I went all the way there and back by GO train, on a Sunday. The "Maid of the Mist" was also featured briefly in the 2003 movie "Bruce Almighty". 4. IDKWYGNBIKIBTWY.

Niagara Falls....always great times there, even in winter...yes, it's fun in winter too. The CN Tower....where my friend wouldn't go near the glass floor panels. Annoyed her no end when I jumped up and down on them (not a small guy...lol). Did not know there was a train to Niagara from Toronto....but I've made that drive several times and yes, once you're away from Toronto...the scenery is pretty cool. So far, the only place I've crossed an international border on foot....parked on the NY side and walked over the Rainbow Bridge, had dinner and by the time I walked back to the US, the cool light show was underway. The Skylon tower is nice....but it's no CN Tower. Haha. Looking forward to the next video!!

Tip from a local: taxis in the area are EXTREMELY overpriced - plan ahead to get from the train station to the falls! If you have a Niagara Parks adventure pass, you'll have access to the WeGo busses, which has a stop either right at the bus terminal, or at the end of the road down on the parkway (5 min walk max) and will connect you to all the major attractions! Green line should run by the GO bus station, and can take you to where you were dropped off, at Table Rock.

I have been to Niagra Falls many times by car, taking Route 12 from Burlington to Niagara Falls. The funny thing is I went with my dad in the middle of winter when Niagara falls were covered in snow up to your waist. At times that's how deep the snow was. If you ever take the GO Train to Niagara Falls, you will notice that the tracks do not end right there. In fact, Pre-Covid Amtrak America's National Train service used to operate between Toronto's Union Station and New York City's Penn Station. It used to be named 2 numbers. The 1'st was VIA Rail Train #97 New York, and when you crossed the border into the United States, it would operate as Amtrak #64 Maple Leaf. But in most cases, people just used to call it the 64 Maple Leaf because Amtrak was the Train Operator. Sometimes I know when I was coming back upon arrival into Niagra Falls, Ontario because there is a Niagra Falls New York Directly across from us in the U.S it would take over VIA Rail's Service all the way to Oshawa in the East End of Ontario where GO Transit's Lake Shore East line would terminate.

Toronto is so big in every way and lake location is big asset. Many things about Ontario that I love - Stratford and the Shakespeare Festival, the Amish Farmer's Market with rows of horse-drawn buggies, Niagara-on-the-Lake, charming central downtown, where Niagara River empties into Lake Ontario. It's also the home of Shaw Festival. Niagara Falls is the highlight of the area - concentrate on River and Falls attractions. The city proper is very Vegas. I've enjoyed many trips there, but must confess my preference for Canada from Calgary west. Never been to Montreal or Quebec or Eastern Coastal Provinces and would love to explore that. Looking forward to your cross-country rail tour to see some of that. BTW, we've always driven to Niagara Falls from Cincinnati.
