The Trans-Canada Road Trip

Time-lapsed dashcam footage from our 2023 summer road trip from our home in northeastern Massachusetts to Ottawa, Ontario and then west across Canada to Vancouver.
In selecting the time lapse speed, I have tried my best to strike a balance between being unwatchably fast or unwatchably long, but even so the overall length comes out to just over three hours at an average of 24x speed (at highway speed that works out to about Mach 2!). I didn't include any outings we made between check-in and check-out at any of our daily destinations, and I edited out all of the gas and food stops along the way. I did leave in some of the scenic stops and detours where they made sense though, either because the footage was interesting, because it added another province or state to our trip (Quebec and Michigan), or because the detour ended at some point further along our route than where it began. We lose a few yards here and there where I edited out turns into and out of gas stations, restaurants, etc., and we missed a few miles east of Wawa, Ontario because the SD card was full, but other that, what I have tried to present here is a complete, continuous coast-to-coast journey. I'll leave it up to you the viewer to decide which parts you want to watch and which parts you want to skip over.

0:00 - Day 1: Lawrence, Massachusetts to Ottawa, Ontario
Includes a scenic drive across New Hampshire and Vermont to Lake Champlain, a ferry ride across the lake to upstate New York, and crossing the St. Lawrence River into Canada (at night) at Cornwall, Ontario
14:59 - Day 2: Ottawa to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
A quick sightseeing detour through downtown Ottawa before setting off through the north woods of Ontario and along the shore of Lake Huron. There is also a quick side trip across the Ottawa River into Quebec just to add another Canadian province, bringing the total up to six for the trip.

A quick side trip across the bridge to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, then back on the Trans-Canada Highway along the rugged north shore of Lake Superior
48:41 - Day 4: Wawa to Thunder Bay, Ontario
A second day of driving along Lake Superior's scenic north shore
1:02:28 - Day 5: Thunder Bay, Ontario to Selkirk, Manitoba
Through the wilderness of western Ontario, along the shore of Lake of the Woods and into the prairies of Manitoba
1:24:53 - Day 6: Selkirk, Manitoba to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan
Across the prairie, dirt road detour, Happy Rock (one of those delightfully cheesy largest-ball-of-twine-type roadside attractions), prairie thunderstorm, a little detour to see an old train in Regina, Saskatchewan
1:45:52 - Day 7: Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan to Banff, Alberta
Through the high plains of Saskatchewan and Alberta, culminating in that magical moment when the Rocky Mountains appear out of the mist along the horizon. Also includes a stop in Vulcan, Alberta for its Star-Trek-themed roadside attractions.

Meandering through the mountains to the shore of Kootenay Lake.
2:28:06 - Day 9: Balfour to Penticton, British Columbia
A side trip to Kaslo, BC to visit a Kootenay Lake steamboat, then west to Penticton on Okanagan Lake.
2:42:51 - Day 10: Penticton to Mission, British Columbia
A difficult day of road closures and traffic delays, culminating with what should have been a lovely drive through the scenic Fraser River Canyon, except it was well after dark by the time we got there!
2:58:35 - Day 11: Mission to Vancouver, British Columbia
The last few miles into downtown Vancouver to complete our cross-country drive.
