THE TRANSFORMATIVE POTENTIAL OF HIGHER EDUCATION: ‘CLIMATE JUSTICE UNIVERSITIES’

On Tuesday 9 April, at 14:00 BST / 15.00 CEST, Professor Jenny C. Stephens from Northeastern University (Boston, USA), joined the TIP knowledge community to discuss ‘Climate justice universities’, exploring the transformative potential of universities to:
- facilitate systemic change,
- reduce vulnerabilities and economic precarity, and
- advance climate justice.
The event was hosted by TIPC member and coordinating partner, INGENIO (CSIC-UPV) and the Government of Catalonia The aim was to create a platform for reflective debate on the role of universities in socio-technical systems transformation, in order to move towards a greener, fairer and more resilient socio-economic model, as articulated in the Strategy for the Smart Specialisation of Catalonia 2030 (RIS3CAT 2030).

Jenny C. Stephens is Professor of Sustainability Science and Policy at Northeastern University in Boston. Her research, teaching, and community engagement focus on integrating social justice, feminist and anti-racist perspectives on climate and energy policy, and climate justice into higher education. She is the author of numerous articles that analyse the role of universities in transitions. In 2024, he will publish a book on climate justice universities, in which he argues for the transformative potential of universities to facilitate systemic change to reduce vulnerabilities and economic precarity and to advance climate justice.
