The planet has been cooling for over two decades now after brief warm up period. Our government was sued by bunch of scientists over lying about supposed global warming and lost. That’s why now they call it climate change. Also, you see “racism” everywhere which is quite disturbing. Just because you are suspect or cautious or resentful of a particular group of people based on your experiences with that group, does not make you a racist. Furthermore, there is nothing wrong with being a racist. It simply means that you think your race is superior to others. What is wrong with that??? Some people think Yankees are superior to White Sox and vice versa. Who gives a damn? “Supremacism” on the other hand is a desire to exterminate everyone who is different than you.

Ella Purnell, who played Lucy, played Jackie in Yellowjackets, where her character was also a young American who, while about to enter a happy new chapter in her life, was hit with a disaster that killed many people close to her, and was forced to adapt to an unfamiliar land full of stranger dangers...and possibly cannibalism. Also, she wore blue, yellow, and white at one point...and her given named ended in the "ee" sound.

I believe they clarified that the bomb was dropped after "the fall of Shady Sands." Kind of like "the fall of Rome" started as it began to fall, not the day it "fell." But we can guess the bomb was dropped (very roughly) 15-20 years ago because of how old Maximis is now.

I was under the impression that Shady Sands was bombed in 2277. It is currently 2296. Did I miss something? Spoilers Max looked to be 5 or 6 when he was found at Shady Sands so he's 24 - 25 years old. Lucy said that until she was 6 she thought that the light over their crops was the sun. Making her roughly the same age.

I think many who hated some plot beats don’t understand things cause they think people when given the chance always choose logical ideas. Like horror movies people scream why would you do blank. They don’t get that yes it loses resources to have max money with smaller population. But in proportion you’d still be richest and build world your way where your always on top from scratch. And build a society that you deem best. It’s all not good in reality but it’s a good villian motivation. Villians are supposed to have plausible goals not exactly right ones. People forgot that over time for some reason like people who think main characters having flaws are bad. Or woman mains must act like men to be considered strong when it’s not always true. Fallouts woman is strong and not a stereotypical male hero trope with a girl face model covering. Just my two cents.

@@nichescenesRational actor theory has been so bastardized and misapplied in contemporary political science it’s horrifying. People no longer understand how to properly apply it on any level, whether individual, institutional, or nation-state.

@nichescenes 7 ай бұрын
@@spiraljumper74 Interesting. Off topic but you got me ranting lol. It could be me, or others, or both lol. It's just that I see an influx of people watching series and getting into stuff...that weren't particularly interested in it that much growing up, so like normies say, it's new to them and most of the stuff we watched a long time ago they skipped somehow. lol. So I assume this is what happened to a lot of people. So a lot of the takes you learn to drop at a younger age when consuming media are fresh and thrown around on youtube as good criticism. After experiencing media for a while takes like calling out characters for not doing what you would do in all situations, calling a series trash writing for not doing what you think is best, etc. Sure there are times for that as well, but most of the time I'm scratching my head like, ok if we did it your way there wouldn't be a story...and most of the time their way is explained in the story if they give it time, as not a viable option but by then their dropping the show. The answer to this is make the series stop and address their potential criticisms but it becomes like that episode of community where the people in a horror film do all the correct things and address them to the audience in exposition.
@spiraljumper74
@spiraljumper74 7 ай бұрын
@@nichescenes I was bringing up the political science context because I assumed one of the chief complaints you were addressing was the nuking of Shady Sands. A lot of people have made arguments, often raising rational actor theory incorrectly, regarding why Vault-Tec would not launch nukes either during the Great War or at Shady Sands. They assume that institutions and nation-states “acting rationally” makes sense within the confines of some “objective and universal understanding of logic,” which is often just a misconstrued version of the arguer’s own ethical/logical framework without them realizing it. In fact, rational actor theory requires a near-holistic understanding of the unique incentive structures and contextual factors in any situation, and is entirely predicated on basing rational predictions on those unique factors. In the case of Vault-Tec’s actions pre-collapse, Vault-Tec’s incentive structure of investor returns in a hyper-capitalist paradigm encourages shockingly selfish and broadly destructive behavior (which Chris illustrates with his apt comparison to modern corporate climate attitudes). And the context they exist in is the near-certainty of complete atomic annihilation over the next few years whether they intervene to accelerate it or not, under such circumstances I can’t imagine such a broadly amoral institution taking anything off the table. Indeed, if you take into account Vault-Tex’s clear and ultimate end goal, which is complete social and economic *control* of whatever is left, everything pretty much falls neatly into place, it makes sense they’d want to control the end, and the new beginning, of the world. I think the show is pretty airtight in terms of this stuff, honestly.
@chaost4544
@chaost4544 7 ай бұрын
@@nichescenes my original comment was trying to give an answer to Chris rather than anything dealing specifically in the show. Human societies tend to repeat patterns in history. We really don't learn from history but at the same time humanity is almost locked into making similar decisions because of things like demographic issues and limited resources. As an example, the current birthrate demographics are such humanity is seeing the largest military buildup since the beginning of WWII. When there's a dramatic shift in birthrate demographics (both extremely high and extremely low), historically it tends to lead to significant war and conflict.

you should really watch the 1975 Harlan Ellison adaptation 'A Boy and His Dog'. people will tell you Fallout is inspired by Mad Max or The Warriors, but this movie is older than both and contains everything Fallout may've taken from either of those movies and so much more. honestly, so much of the Fallout setting is straight up lifted from A Boy and His Dog that it's ridiculous people would argue, but that reference to Cooper's movie 'A Man and His Dog' is maybe the first official acknowledgment i've ever seen

I feel like I get a pretty good read on how well-versed in ‘90s Sci-Fi films people are based on how they feel about Moldaver after they hear that conversation between her and Cooper in in the hallway of the meeting. Chris & his vault-aversion, if the vaults are like these vaults I might be okay with it, but if you’ve checked out Douglas Rushkoff’s latest book, Survival Of The Richest: Escape Fantasies Of The Tech Billionaires, then you know the typical current-day bunker is more like the setting of Day Of The Dead (1985) than a Fallout vault, and in that case I absolutely agree. I will say, when it comes to the “going outside” part, the rooms where they have their crops and celebrated the wedding might just be enough 🤷🏻‍♀️ To each their own tho. Lastly, remember the First They Came poem by Pastor Niemöller starts where “they” first cane for the communists, then the socialists, and then the trade unionists, before coming for the jews and then the speaker. Why tho? The communists, socialists, trade unionists, [also anarchists,] were actively trying to stop the fascists, fighting brown shirts in the streets, [check out Mark Bray’s book Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook-He goes into a lot of depth about the history of the antifascist movements from that time to the present, it’s a great primer on the subject.] The leftists of the era very much understood the situation and took action to fight against it, ideally before it started, a sentiment that leads to one of my favorite quotes, “Fascism is not to be debated m, it is to be destroyed,” from Buenaventura Durruti. Point is, even then some people understood that certain paths were not inevitable and tried their best to get us to change course, (many of them died trying.) Fast-Forward to today where capitalist realism, ( “loosely defined as the predominant conception that capitalism is the only viable economic system, and thus there can be no imaginable alternative”- See Mark Fisher’s Capitalist Realism for more on that,) has taken root so deeply it’s hard not to think we’re heading down these same paths. BTW, if y’all are interested in the nuclear element of the story, I do recommend the film Threads (1984;) the show Jericho (2006;) Alas, Babylon by Fat Frank (1959;) and Hiroshima by John Hersey (1946.) 🙏🏼☺️ Godspeed y’all.

Great reaction guys. The Fallout show has been amazing & I think it has exceeded expectations. We’ve been spoiled in 2024 so far: Dune 2, Shogun & now Fallout have all been great. Anyway, At around @21:10 when Lucy is scoping out Level 12 in Vault 4 & discovers the science “experiments” & the my show the lady goving birth to baby gulpers you guys astutely stated something along the lines of: “They’re scientists bro, they don’t ask why?” “They’re trying to make something better but effin’ up.” I think you guys nailed it on the head. I think they were trying to cross humans with other irradiated specimens - human or otherwise - to create a radiation resistant human. One of the scientists in one of the videos who was giving the monologue before he rightly concluded he was about to die argued that despite their failures & the dangers that there is still potential & that you should continue to give scientists unbridled power to experiment regardless of the morals, dangers, etc. It’s basically meant to show how insane, corrupt, immoral, etc the scientists are & ostensibly continue to be. If you look at Fallout’s themes, it’s pretty scary & disturbing because it’s a critique of modern times. We see themes of government, corporate greed, abuses od power, immoral experimentation, etc. It’s downright scary to think or consider that the situations in Fallout aren’t that farfetched & possible…🫣😵😵‍💫😦🫤😬🫠

And no one is talking about that, we're only barely just now looking into asteroid mining, not even capture. But like, if we grabbed an icy body and brought it back to a lagrange point, that'd solve that whole water thing, *and* you'd have radiation shielding for ships built in orbit. Hopefully they explain more next season, but my head canon is that Muldaver probably joined up with the Enclave 200 years ago and probably did Cryo. She probably woke up at some point, could have been around since Fallout 1. Just part of the enclave. Befriended the dude that’s just a head now and worked with him on her…project that Vault tech stole, but kept it secret from the Enclave. Eventually she Left, joined up with the NCR, and made a difference there until someone blew up Shady Sands. She could’ve been part of the NCR’s rise to power. Of course that doesn’t explain why it took until now for her special thing that was supposed to save the world now suddenly being used. Why not when the NCR was around? More questions. Damn good show.

Id dont think she had a personal bunker with a cryotube because(POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOR NON GAMERS) from what we’ve seen of the personal home bunkers meant for one family(like the one the family goes into in ep1, is they were completely innefective because they either couldnt properly block radiation or they didnt have enough resources to last long enough, most of those bunkers in the games were filled with dead families. Great reaction but I missed Marketa :) Just to clarify, the bomb on Shady Sands had to drop a little later than 2277 as Fallout: New Vegas takes places in 2281 and Shady Sands is mentioned several times in that game as the capital and no mention of bombing. The date on the chalkboard either reference something else causing the "fall" (maybe the 1st battle of Hoover Dam, which NCR won, but barely and costly or election of Kimball as president of NCR) or is simply a production mistake (which would be bummer as everything else in this show has a lot of attention to detail). Todd Howard himself clarified in the interview for IGN that the bombs fell on Shady Sands just after events of New Vegas
@cylontoaster7660
@cylontoaster7660 7 ай бұрын
Todd Howard did mention that, but the show still contradicts that explanation. During episode 4, Lucy talks about the Plague of 77 that killed her mother and made her father lose 120 pounds and everyone had to be quarantined. That means it is an event that other Vault Dwellers in her vault could confirm date wise. Without going into the plot for the rest of the season, given what we later learn about the nuking of Shady Sands, Shady Sands getting nuked in 2277 (or maybe 78 at the latest) is the only logical conclusion and it couldnt have been nuked after New Vegas. Effectively, the show messed up

@@judaychop yeah, but Micky made the remark in regards to Ella Purnell choosing to play Fallout to better understand the character and world. I just think it's funny how the two main actors had completely different approaches to it and they both worked out Edit: misspelled Ella's name

@@HumbleBovine that because for the most part they get told what to do and say by people who clearly care about the source material, im not saying acting is easy, and kudos to her for going what should be normal and not the extra mile, but it wasnt all that necessary, its more important that the people behind the scenes actualy crafting the show know the source material well.

@@HumbleBovine that's because Waltons job was to play a cowboy type like he's used to . So he really had no need to play the games to be fair and u see how well it worked out

To be honest i think doing so added to his performance. I know its easy to interpret it as disrespect but his motivation for doing so was that he would play the character not as "a videogame movie" Character but as his own person and character and he knocks it out of the park for it.

Except that the whole "fiduciary responsibility" argument falls flat when you consider that if Boeing (for example) completely ignores safety, then airlines stop flying their planes (or passengers stop flying in them) so how does that benefit Boeing's bottom line?
