I first read this in 1988 when I was 14. This is one of my favorite conan stories. I love it. I remember I gave the novel to this intellectual and highly educated woman when I was working as a waiter at a restaurant. She took the book but she never returned it as I never saw her again. I hope she read thus amazing story.

@@aewetubehogottaeattoo..2938 By Crom you are right. You can't blame me though, I maen how many times did conan get taken advantage of by women? I bet even you have been taken advantage of women a few times. Women have a strange power over all men that make us do things we normally wouldn't. I'd do anytbing to have the woman of my dreams. Remember what Uther Pentrafon did in Excalibur. Excalibur is a true story too, just like all of Conans adventures are true stories.

L sprague de camp made a lot of changes in the stories. Especially conan's character. I respect the work behind the audiobook but if you want the real conan, don't read the L spargue de camp versions. The only positive things about them are the frazetta cover arts and the fact that they made conan's character popular again. We wouldn't have the 82 conan movie and the 70's marvel comics without these books. They are also very different from the original, especially the movie, but in the case of the movie they made changes for a creative reason. L sprague de camp just wanted to downtune the stories and conan to make more money.

@@kalebspicer4848 The first one was good movie the story, and character just didnt feel as Howards vision of Conan. Theres no way Howards Conan had childhood of been slave. He was always free, and thats kinda core of his character. Arnolds Conan also seemed like dim witted d&d kinda barbarian unlike Conan from og stories by Howard. The original idea, and script for the movie was more in line with Conan lore i believe, but that was abandoned by the new director. After that hastily drafted new script that had really nothing to do with any old Conan stories was made just for the movie. I saw synopsis of the first script, and it would have been even better movie most likely i feel, and most importantly better Conan story.

@neil dear thank you for the explanation. Yes. I had a real wtf moment when (what I assume is L sprague de Camp contribution) when: (from memory) 1. There's a whole chapter introducing the fort from the perspective of an orphaned little girl. That perspective has never been used. There's no? children in any of the other stories. 2. The pirate meeting where conan convinces everyone through logic that they all need to work together. I think REH conan would have done this differently.
