Adrienne Rich’s “The Trees” is a nature poem. Forest is the natural habitat of trees, birds and insects. In the absence of trees in the forest, the ecological balance will be disturbed. In this poem, the poetess has personified nature. Man has confined nature within his four walls. Man has uprooted trees and kept them in the modern artificial glasshouses. But nature can’t be subdued for long. The trees struggle to break the artificial bathers. They become free breaking all the bondages and move towards their natural habitat - the forest. Only there they can grow to the natural vastness, grandeur and dimensions. The poetess tries to convey that like human beings trees also need freedom. They can get their natural growth and freedom when they are in the forest and not in artificial houses made by human beings

Mam the ncert ,other books and our teachers explained that this story is about the conflict between man and the nature. As the humans are cutting trees in forest. Transfering them from their original home to artificial surrounding. Human beings started planting trees in their own house. So ,i am really confused .

Hello, this poem is widely read and people can interpret differently. Please follow the explanation given by the school teacher as it can differ from our explanation. The only thing is that it should be convincing. The poem is symbolical so, the explanation should be coherent. BTW where has the NCERT explained the poem? Please tell me.

The main theme of poem is that peole are hanging photos of plants , trees and nature photos inside their houses. Human are growing plants in their homes to give semblance of nature inside their houses . The real nature lies oustide the house into the forests. forests .

The poem actually indicates to women. But in schools, we are being taught on the basis of forest. But actually, the poem is about empowerment of women. Thus it's a symbolic poem. But the doubt arises that on what basis should we answer in exam?! On forest or tree?
