We are super thrilled to get this episode out to you. We feel like we’ve said this a lot, but it just genuinely gets better and better. We get to use our new (second hand) bosuns chair to go up the mast to bommie spot, but that doesn’t mean that the challenges of sailing the reef stop there. Being novice sailors as a young couple with little experience means that we have to think on the go and hope for the best. Thankfully we’ve got our high spirits to get through it together, and enjoy the absolute WONDER of exploring the Great Barrier Reef on our small sailboat. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed living it. Also let us know if you like Josh’s animations this vid! It’s his debut, he’s pretty excited about it heheh. Big love! The New Kids.

Great video! What a fantastic weather window you had for the reefs - whenever it is like that, make the most of it! Keep in mind a lot of the reef damage in those areas is from cyclones too, you will find spots away from recent (last 10-15 years) cyclone paths are much more vibrant - luck of the draw a bit. As is anchoring on reefs, you will inevitably snag at some stage like you did - what you did is the best way to get free (other than a good SCUBA diver!). Let the chain go slack, pull it in again, manoeuvre one way or another and use the weight of the boat and momentum to pull free if you can - just put the load on a cleat not the anchor winch when you do this.

Hello my friend! Yeah we really lucked out having it in the middle of Jacks visit which worked perfectly to reef hop north towards Townsville. That’s a great point about the cyclone related damage, we have seen the lasting affect it has had in industry with all the closed/ abandoned resorts. Really hoping we can get out to see the best of the GBR in our second season. A dive course is definitely on the wish list for us, being able to spend that amount of time underwater and focus on the micro rather than macro environment is a real dream. Cheers for your unsnagging tips, I’ll be more selective for anchoring depths where possible in the future. Your friend, Josh

30 meters is a bit deep to put all that chain out. The weight of 100 vertical feet of chain might kill your windlass. With excellent visibility, Josh might want to follow the chain down as deep as he’s able to determine what the anchor is hung up on. If the problem is the chain wrapped around a coral head because the boat had been just drifting with no strain on the hook, you can do a lot of damage to the living coral. You’re better off trying to determine what’s going on than using the brut force of your engine. Giving some slack and a swing to port or starboard might be all you need. At any rate, thanks again for the peep into your lives. Cheers.

Hey Jonathan, too right mate. The stress was high (which is where I went wrong first) in future in follow a procedure like that and avoid anchoring at such depths to begin with. Appreciate your advice mate! Glad you enjoyed the video my friend Cheers, Josh

Love having you back again. Great (animatory) is that even a real word... Animations...work Josh. Probably showing my ignorance here, but would a "Fisherman's" Anchor have been better around the reefs. There's less risk of damage to the coral. Allegedly.?? Thank you both for sharing. Loving your channel. Take care.

Hey Bryan, cheers for the love as always mate! Looking forward to creating more fun things to put in the videos in future. Not sure on the fisherman’s anchor but will look into it. I think in future we will scope out satellite imagery to find a better spot to anchor prior to heading out. Cheers mate! Josh

I'm a commercial fisherman. The way we get them on hung is to make a large circle wide circle around your anchor while the chain is tight and if it doesn't come loose Volume One direction go the other it will come out. Very wide circles.

Sadly, even the reefs you have filmed which you describe as "vibrant" look mostly brown & dead to me. Two decades ago there would have been little or no brown, only green, blue, yellow, red & purple.

Hello my friend, I can understand what you’re saying. This is one of the reasons why we are living this lifestyle and adventure early in life rather than waiting for retirement as we have no idea what state it will be in by then. We are glad to have seen what we do and will keep searching for what you speak of, I wonder if the South Pacific still has systems as you speak of or if it’s suffering the same? Cheers, Josh
