The presented lecture is Part-2 of our comprehensive and research-oriented session on "The Trilateral/Triangular Cold War: Tech-Curtain, Changing Order and Growing Great Power Rift".
Snippet of the lecture:
It was in the aftermath of the WWII that the United States replaced Great Britain as the new balancer and peace broker and that, for the first time in the history of global politics, a non-European state emerged on the forefront to author an order in its own image. Whilst so doing, the US fathered a host of new institutional frameworks in a bid to regulate inter-state transactions, navigate conflicts, and maintain peace and stability. The order so introduced and ensued came to be what now known as "The Liberal Meritocratic Rules-Based International Order". The order is so-termed for the reason that it is spearheaded and supervised by a democratic country with greater proclivity and advocacy for the possession of fundamental of human values and for its liberal credentials. Besides, the new operating system was initial limited in its scope and substance, and was pitched to foster, ensure, and maintain peace in the European landscape. But, as time passed by and with the disintegration of the then superpower Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall, the US-led order transformed from being a bounded and bipolar configuration to an outward and a unipolar operating system.
Such a tectonic shift in the realm of world politics was widely celebrated and much-touted by political scientists as "a Unipolar Moment" and "The End of History". Yet, unfortunately and to the detriment of political godfathers, the then academic celebrations proved short-lived due, in part, to America's greater inclinations towards personalisation of power, exploitation of authority, militarization of institutional arrangements, weaponization of financial chokepoints, and excessive liberal interventionist misadventures. Resultantly, need for a more viable, democratic and reliable alternative started getting traction in the revisionist actors. In this connection, Fareed Zakaria writes that "the US order started with the fall of the Berlin Wall and ended with the fall of Saddam's Bathist regime in Iraq". The country, Zakaria continues, abused its power punitively via her unlawful interventions, regime topplings, and protracted wars. Additionally, like always and with the dissipation of its power and nosediving legitimacy, the US ventured out in her quest for an enemy. In this pertain, Arundhati Roy comments that "in order to remain relevant and to acquire its zero-sum national interests, the US has always been doctoring enemies". Then, being a declining power, the US bought the conception of Thucydides trap and ended up engineering a new rival in the form of China. Thus, the existing power attaches strategic and rather religious significance to confronting, competing and countering China.
