HISTORY OF THIS TRICK
In 1922, Harry Houdini was the most famous magician in the world. The forty-eight year old Houdini was so confident in his knowledge of magic that he had an open challenge to all fellow magicians - 'show me any trick three times in a row and I'll be able to tell you how you did it.' At the Great Northern Hotel in Chicago, Dai Vernon took the great Houdini up on his challenge. But Vernon would not repeat his trick three times in a row - Dai Vernon repeated it SEVEN TIMES and Houdini could not get it!
The trick Dai Vernon chose to fool Houdini with was his own version of the classic ambitious card routine, so named because the spectator's chosen card always wants to get to the top of the deck. Vernon had Houdini choose a card and then sign the chosen card with his initials 'HH'. Houdini returned his card to the middle of the deck and, with a snap of Vernon's fingers, it magically appeared on the top. Houdini was astounded and Vernon repeated the trick. And then again, for the third time. 'You must have a duplicate card!' Houdini guesses, Vernon calmly points outs: 'With your initials, Harry?' Houdini then suggests that Vernon must have used a well-known mentalist's device. But Vernon points out that Houdini's initials are written in ink. 'They make them in ink now!' Houdini splutters but no magician in the room has ever heard of these devices using ink. 'Harry you are fooled!' cries Sam Margules, a Magic Show producer and former assistant of the Whirlwind Illusionist, Horace Goldin.

Many false info in this video... And for those saying that it didn't fool them, it is because they know these moves and double backer exist. Vernon invented them himself, and then did the trick to Houdini. Nobody knew these even existed. So no, you are not a better magician than Houdini

Nice tutorial. I already know how it's done, but I like the way you present it. Especially that little piece of history. You should try incorporating more historical aspects of the tricks into your videos, that'll help your tutorials stand out from the rest! I've seen many people teach the ambitious card, but this is the first time I've ever seen someone mention Houdini. I also find it amusing how so many people are going "this couldn't fool Houdini", not realising that it was nearly a hundred years ago, in an era that wasn't just pre-internet, it was also a time when this sort of thing wasn't even published in books, they were closely guarded secrets among card sharks. People tend to forget that all of these things we take for granted now were really innovative and that countless masters such as Vernon would have to work on it for years to perfect a single technique to the point when some random kid could just go on the internet and learn the secret in 5 minutes.

What you are saying is that learning to play the guitar, for example is so much easier just because I can learn it by watching somebody play it on the internet? I don't think so. Simply being able to watch somebody do somebody do something doe not equate to being able to do it well. In other words, to "learn the secret in 5 minutes" is not enough. The internet simply exposes more people to the skill.

houdini didn't say no one can fool him, he said no one can fool him with the same trick 3 times. in 1919 in chicago dai vernon showed this trick to houdini when vernon was 25,he didn't put the card in the middle at all,he always put it second from the top. after 2 times houdini said that vernon is using duplicate cards, then houdini signed the card, and vernon still brought the card to the top,he did this 7 times. houdini never officially admitted that he was fooled by this this but this is what dai vernon said.

In one of my e-books, I gave the most probable routine that Vernon used - I have researched it intensely and verified with my friends Jon Racherbaumer, Jim Swain, J.K. Hartman, and others. No one is sure whether Vernon only placed the "Ambitious card" under the top card or used his Depth Illusion...I believe Vernon used his Depth Illusion, which was renamed with some subtleties later, by Marlo, which he called TILT. I am not absolutely sure who is to be credited for double-back cards, but Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin (the magician that Houdini fashioned his name after), was known to have used double-back cards for at least two tricks, in the mid-1800s. Whether he created them or not, no one knows for sure. Vernon did not create the double-back card. Paul A. Lelekis
@JiveDadson
@JiveDadson 7 жыл бұрын
Hate to rain on your parade, but you are missing a critical point. No one but you is supposed to know that the selected card goes second from top. The move is called "Marlo tilt" (although I was "tilting" before Marlo published it, and I imagine others were too). Spectators are supposed to think the card is going into the middle. Maybe I'll do a tutorial video. The ones on youtube now are not good. The end of your routine is not how Dai Vernon did it when he fooled Houdini.

To all the people saying that this did not fool Houdini, it actually did. There's a legit story behind it. Dai Vernon performed it on Houdini with a signed card and as far as I could remember, Houdini didn't admit that he had been fooled. It was at the time that Houdini had died when his wife (or some lady close to Houdini. I'm not quite sure) said to Vernon that her husband, Mr. Houdini had actually been fooled... Remember kids, he performed this over 100 years ago. Magic was kind of hard to learn back then. There was no KZbin with free tutorials. Magic can only be performed by a selected handful of people... Sorry for making such a long comment. It just pisses me off when people act like they're the greatest magician who ever lived and they can expose all of the secrets blah blah blah. Magic is an art. First of all, since 1991 the ACR has been one of the most popular card routines, and can be easily found and learned by googling it (as in this video). Second of all, the double lift is now known by every snot-nosed 11 year old. YOU didn't figure out the DL, you miserable piece of shit. You learned it for free on the internet. Third of all, The ACR did not fool Houdini. It was the double backer. Not the pop-up climax. Not any of the other moves in this video. The double-backer part is what fooled Houdini. P.S. Apparently most of you are not aware that this double-backer fooled Houdini A HUNDRED YEARS AGO. Also, Houdini wasn't very good with card tricks (though he originally billed himself as the "King of Kards," before he rebranded himself as the escape artist. If this did not fool you, it is not because you're "as good as" Houdini. It's because it has been done to death, explained to you, spoonfed to you, and you're able to watch every magic video several times and in slow motion as much as you need. In conclusion, you are nothing compared with Houdini. *You will be forgotten.*

David Frederick Wingfield Verner (June 11, 1894 - August 21, 1992), better known by his stage names Dai Vernon (pronounced alternatively as "DIE" or as "DAY" as in David) or The Professor, was a Canadian magician. Vernon first fell in love with magic when he was seven years old after his father took him to see a magic show. He began to use the first name "Dai" after a newspaper used the abbreviation in place of "David"; the paper was using the Welsh nickname for David. When Verner first moved to the United States, the male member of a popular ice-skating pair had the surname Vernon; Americans continually mistook Verner's last name to be the same as the popular ice skater, and eventually, the magician became fed up with correcting people and simply adopted "Vernon" as well.Owing to his knowledge of, and skill at, sleight of hand, Vernon has long been affectionately known as The Professor. Harry Houdini (who in his early years billed himself as "The King of Kards") often boasted that if he saw a card trick performed three times in a row he would be able to figure it out. Vernon then showed Houdini a trick where he removed the top card of the deck and placed it second from the top, then turned over the top card to again reveal the original card. Houdini watched Vernon do the trick seven times (some versions of the story say five times), each time insisting that Vernon "do it again." Finally, Houdini's wife and Vernon's friends said, "Face it, Houdini, you're fooled." For years afterward, Vernon used the title The Man Who Fooled Houdini in his advertisements.Among magicians, Vernon is credited with inventing or improving many standard close-up effects with cards, coins, and other small items. The "standard" cups and balls routine is his, and his 6-ring "Symphony of the Rings" remains one of the most popular Chinese linking rings routines in use to this day. Vernon spent the last thirty years of his life as Magician-in-Residence and the star attraction at the Magic Castle in Los Angeles, California. There he mentored magicians. Dai Vernon died on August 21, 1992, in Ramona, County of San Diego, California.[2] His body was cremated and the ashes were interred on a shelf, with magic memorabilia at the Magic Castle.

This trick is so easy... You only need to know the doublelift and thats it... how could this basic ambitious card routine fool him?
@FlockofSmeagles

You must not perform in front of people often. Because that was the worst display of card magic I've ever seen. 1:30 you couldn't even push the card all the way into the deck. I mean, really? Your double lifts are just out there plain as day. It's not that people know how you're doing it. It's that you are revealing it. FOR CHRIST SAKE it's a card trick completely reliant on DOUBLE LIFTS.

Just watched an episode of "Mysteries at the Museum" (S11 Ep28) that had a segment about Vernon fooling Houdini with a card trick. I don't believe they revealed "the how", but I wasn't paying that close of attention. So my lack of attention prompted a quick Google search to appease my curiosity. Thanks! Hopefully you'll stop getting comments denying that Houdini was fooled by a card trick. If you do, direct them to this episode that elaborates on the event in question.

Yeah, if this trick fooled Houdini, I would say that's more about Dai Vernon's execution than anything else. Pretty sure that guy could have fooled people with "pull my finger".

According to Vernon! It was double lifts with a Double Backer....over and over! This is the Vernon Moves and then An Ambitious Card Routine as a Garnish I guess! VERNON killed HH with ONE MOVE with a Signed Card OVER AND OVER!!! I t does naturally flow as a move in the Ambitous Card Routine of course! Keep practicing Friends!!!

This isn't the trick that fooled Houdini not by a long shot. At the very least the MOVE that fooled Houdini was the Dai Vernon turn over. Not any double lift will do and the Dai Vernon turnover is very hard to perform and is so convincing if will FOOL magicians, it did Houdini. Stock cutting corners Oscar Owen. Learn your craft.

Apparently nobody knows how nor why Houdini could be fooled by this trick nearly 100 years ago. Yes, the 1900s is exactly like the 20th century, nothing has changed for the past century. It's not like times were different back then, right?

you all are forgetting some things. double lifts were new at the time. so we're double backers. The fact that with a double backer the card is legitimately on top was the fooling element. also, he used the Marlo tilt, he didn't put it second from top. Houdini didn't know this control.

I'm no magician by any manner of means. I've watched 1 min 43 secs of this and I think maybe for the first time ever I can see what he did. I even rewound a bit of this and then set the playback at 0.25. I froze the frame at 1:11 and that seems to confirm I'm right. It seems too easy to be true so I'm probably wrong. Now I'm going to watch the rest to see if I'm right that I'm wrong or whether I'm actually right. (I'm now at 2 m 19 s and I was wrong. Damn and blast!)

It's true that Dai Vernon fooled Houdini with a double lift. You can fool ANY magician if they don't know the sleight. My question is: was the card signed? And if it was, it would be worth a small fortune if he had kept it. The double back (or faced) card can be made by peeling off the front of one card and the back off another and then glue the two backs together again using rubber cement (as used in a patch on a bicycle inner tube). This knowledge was available then. Lastly, as far as I know Dai Vernon was right handed.

There really no need for a double backer. It actually is much better without it, cuz then they can inspect the deck. With pinky brakes, and double, triple, (etc.) lifts you can make up a million tricks...

Vernon didn't do all the other ambitious card routine what really fooled houdini was just the beginning of this routine and Vernon only did the first 2 parts of his routine in this video the rest came way later after Houdini passed away but he was still fooled by Vernon with the double backer and placing his card second from the top and making it rise to the top that is true 👍

Most tricks fool magicians the first time they see them. This was not a great trick it was a new trick. I guessed either the double lift with the double backer card or 2 of the same card.
