I recently found this video. This is the best way to dehydrate chicken! It also rehydrates quickly. We went on a month long trip out West and I brought along some of the chicken for those times you are not able to shop for fresh foods or we had been hiking all day and it was an easy meal. I also mixed the meat with enchilada sauce and teriyaki sauce before dehydrating for variety. All of them (including BBQ sauce) tasted great. Thanks.

Im currently making this according to (most) of your recipe! ranch is not something we know in the netherlands, so i just used a personal spice blend with lots of bbq sauce. Thanks for the great vid!

That is awesome! Let me know how it turns out! I'm carrying this right now as one of my lunches (buffalo chicken) as I'm backpacking the laurel highlands hiking trail in Pennsylvania! It's one of my favorites!

Great video! Am working on learning to dehydrate right now so your lesson here is perfect from start to storing. Even have borrowed same dehydrator to get me started. Not dehydrated but my favorite lunch is hidden valley single ready dip cups mixed with 1 tuna pack and chopped sweet bell pepper in a tortilla. Usually a first day meal so I can chop the pepper at home or leave whole for next day as it slices in strips quick and easy on trail.

Do you use the starkist tuna packets? And I like the idea of adding the bell pepper... That sounds really good...

Andy Parrish Outdoors yes the foil packs. Just found Great Value Applewood smoked white chicken in foil packs where the tuna was. Have not tried this yet. Have binge sampled different meats and other things trying to find suitable hiking meals while at home. Idaho instant potatoes in foil packs I love but still want something with protein and healthier. I know everyone says try at home first which I have, but usually throw something in pack haven’t tried. In some cases makes for very funny faces to entertain my hiking buddies and leaves me with no appetite 😂. The tuna mix above was a happy favorite first tried on trail 😋. Do you know of a book with tried and true recipes/methods just for trail?

I just finished dehydrating homemade marinara sauce. It worked lol! I also dehydrated tomatoes and veggies and made homemade veggie stock powder. And Kale chips. The best in sandwiches. Weird but the best

Loved the video! Great detail. Been trying to do a food video myself and I just never get to it! My go to dehydrated mean is refried beans. When hiking I don't like tortillas for some reason so I eat them out of the jar (I cold soak them for lunch) just add fritos, sauce and cheese. I saute half an onion and garlic. Add can of refried beans, can of rotel, plus some cumin and a lil bit of taco sauce. Will make several lunches out of a batch.

@@AndyParrishOutdoors I've tried making my own refried beans and just like the ease and texture of canned ones. Mix up the flavor any way you like. I've even used refried black beans which are great. Does it out thin on your sheets. Of course after it's dry break up in small pieces. They rehydrate pretty quickly if using hot water. But I cold soak in the morning then by lunch they are done. Very yummy!

do they need to be stored in the freezer after already being dried?
@AndyParrishOutdoors
@AndyParrishOutdoors Жыл бұрын
No, it just extends the lifespan dramatically (a few months to a year) . You can also extend the life by adding moisture absorbers and vacuum sealing.

This is part of the answer I was looking for. Thank you. I need a fairly good idea of how long the chicken lasts on the shelf, so I know how far out I can go for a first in first out rotation. Is it weeks/months and how many? Or how long post freezer can it stay on the shelf? Hope that made sense.👀🤷‍♀️
@AndyParrishOutdoors
@AndyParrishOutdoors 8 ай бұрын
Two weeks on the shelf. 1 year in the freezer.

How many days is it stable once you get it out of the freezer?
@AndyParrishOutdoors
@AndyParrishOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
If you use moisture absorbers and vacuum sealing then it can last multiple years. I just use ziplock freezer bags, so I keep it under 3 weeks in a cool dry place. I don't usually push it that long. I typically leave it in the freezer until 1-2 days before I leave. So maybe a week or 2. Moisture and temperature shorten the lifespan.

What is the shelf life for this packing it in mylar with silica packets and oxygen free packets?
@AndyParrishOutdoors
@AndyParrishOutdoors 2 жыл бұрын
3-5 years under best conditions... Moisture and oxygen are not your friends in food storage... leaner options will also last longer than fatty meats... refrigerating or freezing will help you get closer to those limits...
