A long time ago, when i was a young wife, we dehydrated our foods in the oven. We lived way out in the country, and our garden and food prep kept us alive a couple of times.

I have been trying my hand at dehydrating for roughly 2 years now and was not getting successful.. mainly because in India we have no culture of dehydrating or using dehydrated food. But I'm really glad I landed here and learned so much .. Hoping to not give up on dehydrating now. Can't thank you enough for sharing all this information...❤️❤️❤️

I really like the frozen mixed vegetables idea! As someone who backpacks and spends lots of time outdoors, I will usually make my own MREs. I always take Bouillon cubes for a broth and foraged edible plants. The dried vegetables will add some great flavor and nutrition to a simple trail lunch or dinner.

I dehydrated a huge amount of mixed veggies. I bought frozen mixed veggies . After I dehydrated them I wasn’t using them so I powdered all those veggies. Now I have a gallon of veggie powder to add to my hamburger when making . Hamb steak, chili, meat loaf etc etc. I’m making a hamburger steak today and will add a T. I love that you know the difference between cottage and shepherds pies. Fantastic. My dehydrator arrived this morning. Its a magic mill 10 tray box one. It’s loaded up with Asian basil, Mayer lemon slices, bell pepper strips( to grind into powder), and mushrooms. The jerky is marinating in the refrigerator ( different temperature needed, as you know.) I’m so excited. I haven’t used a dehydrator in almost 23 years. Next, the smell of onions dehydrating? I love driving to Gilroy when they are drying alliums. Whole world smells fantastic! I love any dried fruit. Yum. If odd texture, add a bit of apple juice to partially plump them and add to scones🤤 I bought a #10 ca; of pineapple tidbits I got for $3. I’ve been waiting the past 3 months to figure out what to do with it. I’m going to make fruit leather with it. I’ll try it with other berries and applesauce. I can’t wait. I buy my mushrooms bulk at our local Winco. It has the most amazing fresh heavy criminal mushrooms. Easy to clean and dry. Hubby’s🎉 getting me some right now. Only thing I don’t do is zucchini. Can’t stand it. I’m planning to bake sliced winter squash, then dehydrate it as a candy. 🤤.

Jerky!! I’m sorry for the vegans, but the only reason I got a dehydrator was to make venison jerky. You can take any meat, season it or marinade it and dry it out! The possibilities are endless, and it is fun to play with different recipes. Also, you can take chunks of jerky and add to your dry soup base and or your trail mix. Another thing, you can powder it!! Just something I love to do with my annual deer harvest. Great video, Cheers!

I used to make jerky years ago, and really enjoyed making and eating it. I recently made some jalapeno powder that was very simple to make and adds nice flavorful heat! Jalapeno powder gives a different flavor from cayenne powder or other hot pepper flavors. Super simple! Just slice the peppers and dry them. I often take some to a local Tex-Mex restaurant and add it to their very flavorful but not quite hot enough for my tastes salsa verde.

I hope you will let me share an experience I encountered with cheap potato's, I purchased a dehydrator book giving very good advice on dehydrating, however the author was wrong on one important staple, "Potato's" ! We are advised in her book to not bother with Idaho potato's, her reason being they dry dark and unattractive. Prior to purchasing her book I discovered by soaking the blanched potato's in lemon water for 2 hours to overnight produces beautiful white dehydrated potato's and they tastes as good as fresh when dehydrated. More emphasis needs to be stressed on the preparation of foods before they are dehydrated and "after" for dehydrated foods to be and taste their best.

I started dehydrating this summer and have been so surprised at how much I like it. I wanted soup vegetables to dehydrate so I did carrots celery onions zucchini green beans and turnips. I love adding a little turnip to chicken or Turkey broth. It adds to the richness of the flavor. I don’t like turnips any other way so dehydrating them has been fantastic. I’m not wasting any and they add a great flavor. I’ve also liked adding dehydrated vegetables to my soups. Boy does it save time! But my favorite thing that I’ve dehydrated is chopped garlic. I chopped it in my food processor and dehydrated it outside. I broke it up into small pieces and keep it in a jar. When I need minced garlic I put a spoonful into a small bowl and cover with hot water; drain and use it. It also saves me time. I’m glad I found your channel for some other ideas.

Agree, all those are easy to do. I've done most of them, except mushrooms & fresh greens. They're definitely on my to-do list. Another one, not mentioned is dehydrating sweet bell peppers. Grow or buy on sale, firm good quality peppers. Wash. Remove stem. Cut off the top and bottom. Remove seeds. Slice sides into strips and then dice. I use a Chop Wizard. Cut side pieces to fit & chop. Chop the top and bottom, too. No waste. Dry @ 125F 12-24 hours. This needs to be done outdoors in a protected area, such as a covered back porch, detached garage or storage shed. Aroma is STRONG! They are handy to toss into a pot of tomato sauce or chili. No waste with 1/2 of a leftover pepper hanging around in the refrigerator. Watch for sales on fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables. I generally buy about a pound per tray for my 9 tray Excalibur. It will vary depending on the product. If a sale saves $.50 per tray, those savings will quickly mount up as you stock your pantry with shelf stable goodness. As always, thank you for sharing and teaching. Merry Christmas

Hello Ms Darcy I guess I hit the jackpot today finding your channel. I thought I'd look around for a few dehydrating videos to see if I could do it. Looks much easier then canning. Seeing how inexpensive dyhydrators are on Amazon. I have to say the way you explain things, and how knowledgeable , and relatable you are has me subscribing to your channel and pretty excited to see the other videos you have. Thank you so much for this video. The way everything is going in the world since Covid started I think knowing as much as you can about different ways to store food make food especially without electricity if that happens is very important. Aldi had organic spinach on sale for .89, so I bought all 6, froze 2, added 1 to a salad, and dehydrated the other 4, fast and easy. Plan on celery next, because I never seem to use a stalk up before it goes bad, will be great to have it when I need it.

Wow! So very true. Bananas were the very first thing I tried dehydrating years ago. I was so disappointed when they didn't turn out like the store bought dehydrated bananas. Then I found out they were treated with SUGAR. Years later I'm starting to dehydrate again, except NOT with bananas! My favorite so far is definitely the Kale - love the taste! I take that back - my very first favorite is making my own garlic powder!! Then also comes drying my own herbs - especially parsley, which I used tons of. As a child, I remember my grandmother dehydrating her apples and pears on her gas space heater in her living room. I have dehydrated mushrooms and made mushroom powder. Thinking about it now, I guess I'm doing more dehydrating than I realize.

Great videos. Thank you! I started dehydrating accidentally. I was buying fresh parsley and cilantro, but not using all of it, and throwing it away! So, I started drying them, individually, in a lined broiler pan in the oven (just vented no heat); then ground them, the taste is so much better than store bought. Then I started drying onion, to powder; then ginger, then all the fresh herbs I occasionally bought for a "special" recipe...it never ends, such a handy technique.

i'm learning and thanks for these tips. I have done chopped onions and left them in a bit longer so they got a little 'toasted' and they are great. I have also done chopped peeled garlic from the 'warehouse' stores (you know the club of Sam type) and they are much better than the jarred garlic preserved in oil. I love garlic, but be very careful when dehydrating indoors. If you think the onion dehydrating is bad indoors, DO NOT do garlic indoors. Needless to say, any bugs that were indoors will never come back and my Polydactyls have almost forgiven me.

Received a dehydrator for my birthday and have had a few hits and misses. Plan to make onion powder as store bought always seem to go off really quickly. Began typing to talk about my hit with bananas. Chopped them up in the sun dried banana style (halved chunks instead of slices) and dried them on medium for 12-18 hours. Not completely dried and would keep for a few days. They were best while still warm and just like banana muffins (trying to reduce my processed sugar intake). Plan to add a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar next time.

Never thought of dehydrating marshmallows before. My Nesco dehydrator started melting so I'm looking at buying a new one and will definitely try it out. My cousin makes dehydrated soup packets and sells them at the farmers markets. They're actually amazing and nothing like a soup packet you buy at the store. No weird ingredients or thickening agents or anything. It's truly homemade soup ready in minutes. I never asked him how he does it but it couldn't be that hard.

Freezer space is at a minimum. I have been dehydrating for a about 4 years. Mainly do herbs and mushrooms. I definitely want to do frozen veggies. I am going to look for sales on frozen veggies, corn, peas, green beans, carrots and mixed and try them all. Question, how long can you store dehydrated veggies and powders. I usually use it up in a year. if I make a particularly large batch, i put in smaller containers and vacuum seal. I love your channel. learning so much. Never thought to turn things into a powder...Brilliant!!!! I am teaching my daughter in law to be how to dehydrate. I use my greens powder all the time. And I include broccoli leaves off my broccoli from the store, celery leaves, and really any type of leaves. The greens dehydrate and powder to a very small amount, which tells you really that you only need to use a very small amount to get good nutrition. I add it to my dogs' food every day because I read that 50% of dogs over 10 years old get cancer and one of the best way to prevent this is giving them vegetables regularly. Just of pinch of green powder adds a lot of vegetable nutrition to the food. I also add a pinch of dehydrated bone broth.
