There are no stupid questions as such, just poorly considered ones. I mean if somebody asks me " should I buy a better camera?" I could answer simply yes or no. The question was asked without context as to the reason why a better camera should be bought so similarly I should respond likewise without any explanation as to my reply. Neither is useful ultimately, the person asking the question gains nothing of value and the person giving the answer provides nothing of value. Vauge questions can only ever result in vague answers based around assumptions. Whilst I'm a great believer in the notion of, if you don't ask you'll never know, I'm also of the opinion that sometimes its better to find out things for yourself. I mean, what if you receive advice from somebody, well meaning or not, that's just outright wrong or bad? The reality is no two people experience life in the same way. I could say based on my experience you should spend 50% of your annual salary on lottery tickets because I did that and eventually won $20 million ( I didn't just humour me lol ). You do the same and win nothing and end up broke and homeless! So really, what is the value of advice ultimately even if its based on real world experience? Perhaps rather than ask questions hoping for a definitive answer maybe it would be better to simply ask, how did you overcome this situation? You can then decide if their solution might be appropriate to yours or not and decide for yourself the best course of action. There is also this human trait that we are all victims of, the dreaded echo chamber. We know how we want to do something and its not really advice we seek but affirmation for the action we'd prefer to hear! So should you buy a better camera, well you already know the answer to that don't you? 😉

One of the many jobs I've had over the years was being a freelance IT consultant - and the problems with clients or prospective clients were similar. "What kind of computer should I buy?", "Which type of networking solution should I consider for the office machines?", "What's the better platform for me to consider - Mac, PC, Unix/Linux?", and so forth. And of course, most of the time, my answers would all begin with "It depends". It depends on who is the person asking the question. Are they an individual, looking for a computer to do personal stuff, lightweight tasks, etc? Are they other freelancers who often work off-site? Are they a small business? How much tech-literate is their staff? Which sector are they in? (That is crucial to suggest a certain computer platform). Questions are simple. Often, answers are really not (if you do care about the person who is asking, clearly). Another thought-provoking video, Fil. So glad I found your channel. Cheers! //Rick

It's cool how you can relate it to your area of expertise! I always feel like the answer "it depends" is so frustrating, and now I've made this video I've realised that "it depends" often stems from a poorly contextualized question.

Good video, this is a subject rarely covered. The most frustrating thing I see on line and in print is, no context given for the situation the advice is covering. The golden hour is a good one for this. Is the photographer giving the advice near the equator or further north, this is important because in one area you have an hour but in another it could shorter or longer.

That's exactly right. I know it's more hassle to give so much context, but it can make for much better conversations!

It's funny how photography channel who actually talk about photography and real world photo related questions and not gear are so rare and small in subscriber. What do all the people watching these gear channel actually do with there gear?! I enjoy your videos - keep it up! 🙂

I don't know if it is excellent photography advice, or excellent life advice with photography serving as example.

Good point. I guess that's why it's handy to have a wide network, so you have lots of different experiences to draw on.
