The Tricorn Centre 15/07/04

This video of the Tricorn centre (Portsmouth UK) was shot on 15th July 2004. My camera work is pretty amateur but I hope it will be of interest to citizens of Portsmouth.
The demolition of the Tricorn was in progress at the time but certain parts were too strong to be demolished (or exploded!).
My favourite shot in the video is of the Spinacker Tower being built, filmed from the semi-demolished Tricorn (the irony!). I cant help thinking that all the people who called the Tricorn ugly will be saying the same thing about the Spinacker Tower soon. I personally thought that the Tricorn was a masterpiece of modern architecture. A view shared by the producers of Dr Who and Casualty who filmed parts of episodes there (and a few others).

Wow, what a remarkable video. I'm amazed you were allowed in to film them demolishing it. I was born in Portsmouth and every weekend, me and my dad would walk through here to get to Sainsbury's. I always loved it and never wanted it to be demolished. Thanks for the great video!

Nice one - thanks for this - I'm currently writing a fictional book called The Early Days of Disco which features Granny's Disco Nightspot in 1979 - the very place you wander in and film the wreckage of - hopefully should be out in late 2016. Thanks for this record of the end of a special nightclub.

We boogied and backslipped to some good soul nights in grannys discotechque-yes it was unsightly in some respects but it was a unique and interesting design on an otherwise flat skyscape-the motives behind it at the time were worthy and for that alone it should be remembered

I remember a few of the shops in the tricorn - there was Mr Clive in the 1990's also Constad's jewellers, and very early - prob 1970's there was Brentford Nylons - remember those awful yellow and purple bedsheets in nylon - every time you moved you got a static shock!

So shortsighted of the council... But that's Portsmouth city council for you.... Half way through 2021 and the Tricorn site is still a car park!!! Great gateway to Portsmouth. At least had the place been repurposed it could of look cool in a groovy 70's way... The Barbican London is doing just fine..... A wasted opportunity!
