Yes, similar for sure! This style of percussive bowing is actually adapted from progressive upper string players like Darol Anger (founding member of Turtle Island String Quartet) and Casey Driessen (who is actually credited with the invention of the triple chop).

What strings would you recommend for this technique?

To be honest, the strings don't really change much. Any string that's workable for bowing should be fine!
