The coolest thing about the new 1200 range of Thruxtons is that they a good looking motorcycle but are more beautiful to ride than to look at. Proud owner a 2016 1200R, my dream motorcycle. Great video, lots of inspo

Love the seam rubber. Such an easy fix!. I prefer a 'hint' at the retro look, so the fairing is a bit much for me, but the rest is great.

Stock Thruxy has cartridge forks. They are initially quite stiff, but break in nicely as the oil viscosity breaks down. I'll be replacing mine with 5W Lucas at the 20k mile service.

Great, and worth doing just for the brilliant name! Two tiny nitpicks. According to the Construction and Use regs, two details are illegal. 1) The Monza cap is against the rules for new bikes, the fuel cap must not project more than 15mm above the tank. (MSVA manual section 8). 2) You need a rear reflector as well as a tail light, and that neat tail tidy doesn't have one. (MSVA Manual section 6, Annex 3). There is little chance that a copper will do you for these things, but technically speaking, they're not allowed. If you fit them yourself, that's your lookout, but a dealer fitting them would be in the wrong. Excuse me for being a fusspot but it's better to know.
@BikeShedMotoCo
@BikeShedMotoCo 6 жыл бұрын
Good to know Andy. The Monza cap is a standard item on the Thruxton R, so not sure how they got around the rules as the bike is fully homologated for the UK. The tail light is definitely dodgy as I also omitted to fit the numberplate light (supplied) and I guess the indicators are also too close together, so that was my one ode to fashion. Police won't bother with those details tho, as it's all safe and bright.
@busterrabbit
@busterrabbit 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, no need to keep it legal and roadworthy, rules are for everyone else, right? And you wonder why the Police have it in for bikers?
@andytribble1
@andytribble1 6 жыл бұрын
Indeed, I've seen the Monza cap on the RE GT as well, perhaps it's one law for the humble grey importer like myself, and a different law for the big boys. Right about rear indicators, min distance apart for indicators is supposed to be 180mm. Mind you although the Vehicle Approval people would fail that, the average MOT tester won't care, I got away with an LED tail light where the flashers were tucked inside the lens. In the end the GF vetoed them, as following me through traffic she couldn't tell whether I was turning left or right!

Absolutely love what you did with the bike. I've been looking at picking up a Thruxton R and really appreciate the direction you took the customization. I promptly jumped on the Triumph website but don't seem to have the same options - may be due to my being in the U.S.? What I was specifically looking for were black forks, springs, and wheels. I'm with Mr. Evans below but the trip across the pond is a bit of a barrier.
@BikeShedMotoCo
@BikeShedMotoCo 6 жыл бұрын
It's not an R (different forks, RWU) but it has black version of the R Ohlins shocks, so it's a hybrid. I'm waiting for Ohlins fork inserts for the front. I prefer the black RWU setup to USD gold forks, plus I prefer the front fender setup on the non-R. Black wheels should be an option, Fairing can be optioned in any colour, but the configurator may not allow you to order a mismatch scheme.
@robgagnon
@robgagnon 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the reply. Is there any notable difference between the 2016 vs. 2017 vs. 2018? I've found a 2016 1200 that is a candidate but not sure if the $1,000 discount for a 2016 is worth it. Any thoughts? Ohlins fork inserts for the front sounds interesting. Are you addressing the braking at all or comfortable with the way they are?
@BikeShedMotoCo
@BikeShedMotoCo 6 жыл бұрын
As far as we know the bike is unchanged since it launched in 2016, although 2018 bikes will have an upgraded fuel map. I'm happy with the brakes. The R's Brembo's gives you 1 finger braking, but I'm fine with using two.

Without the rear fender have you ridden it in the rain - does it keep the rain, dirt and other rubbish etc off you as the original fender does - or is it a dry weather bike only?
@BikeShedMotoCo

it's an all weather bike. The numberplate keeps of most of the rear wheel spray - but obviously the bigger the fender the better the protection.

We've thought about this - but we'd make it even better - mostly lighter. I looking for someone who can build really good alu tanks (seamless) although we've found lighter spoked wheels (180 rear) which run tubeless tyres and a few other improvements - and straight-thru S/S or Ti pipes... Watch this space.

Good luck with the project! Looking forward to see the blue print come alive. Personally, I love your initial idea of catalog custom that won't void the warranty, just like on the vid (maybe plus rear seat cowl and fender eliminator kit on the naked bike version). A triumph's bar end peep mirror would settle the modern cafe racer look. Really becoming my dream bike :)

FWIW I love those rear lights but when you state not getting into trouble for any of those parts I feel you might want to double check the legality of those led brake/indicator strips in the UK. Perhaps things have changed but they 'were' and maybe still are an MOT failure.
@BikeShedMotoCo
@BikeShedMotoCo 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, as you will know, MOTs are a dark art these days. They are relatively relaxed over some aspects of design (where the SVA is not), as they focus on road worthiness, so in our experience, mods like these can get through quite easily, as they are generally fit for purpose. LED lighting is now standard on cars and bikes - the only issue here (for an SVA not an MOT) is the short distance between the indicators. ...However, if there was a problem, this lighting kit is reversible back to the original in about 30 minutes.
@hollowaysteve
@hollowaysteve 6 жыл бұрын
Bike Shed Motorcycle Club Yes, it was the distance I was thinking about, not the LED itself. I should have made myself clear. According to the 'Road vehicle lighting regulations' the minimum separation distance should be no less than 240mm. Personally I 'would' fit such an item but it's probably not legal in the UK and if involved in an accident that involved ones indication it could impact any outcome. I only mentioned because of the 'everything is OK' statement. Not here to flame, just pointing out that there's a slightly bigger picture than 'just' the MOT man. www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1989/1796/schedule/7/made
@BikeShedMotoCo
@BikeShedMotoCo 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely correct Steve. We spend most of our time dealing with custom bikes where bigger rules are broken than indicator distance. I'm happy to use these LEDs on my bike, as I know they are bright, clear and safe, and I also know that no officer of the law is likely to take issue with them on the street or in a stop... and they do look very cool.
@hollowaysteve
@hollowaysteve 6 жыл бұрын
Bike Shed Motorcycle Club Agreed! They are very cool. It's a great looking bike tweaked to look even better. Good luck with your KZbin channel BTW and congrats with BSMC, It's not 'entirely' my scene but I believe you've been a major influence on the 'motorcycle scene' and the industry in general. Also, having heard you speak (this is not meant to be patronising) your head is in the right place, and I'm hoping that as time progresses you can, with your growing influence ultimately have an impact on the 'broader' motorcycling issues at a higher level. Perhaps you could add 'lobbyist' to your repertoire. Take it easy, Steve.

Thanks for the vid, I was actually looking for just this very thing- showing all the catalogue mods. I've decided on a Bonneville, but not sure whether to merge a Bonnie slightly into a thruxton or vice versa. That rear led setup is gorgeous, and I'll definitely be stealing the idea for the tank seam. Is it the sort of stuff that goes around car windows? Easily found? Also, that jacket looks the business..any info? Does it have protection at all?

What a strange comment. Do you buy a house and leave the old furniture in it? Would you by a car with no radio and refuse to fit one? Humans love to upgrade, fix, renew, improve - and these bikes are built to a price and a level, knowing they will be customised and upgraded. They even make it easy by producing legal, homologated arts and supplying them fitted... Human nature rules - and is well catered-for here.

LOL. Thanks for describing me as a youth, as I'm 51. I have no idea whether Triumph did or didn't have factory fairings back in the day, but nor did I comment on it, either way. @PeterDad60 6 жыл бұрын
My comment is relevant. Your first thing youponited out was the fairing! In case you missed it and obviously you did, because you reported the fairing to be along the lines of a Ducati from years ago. It would have been more accurate to report it was along the lines of the mid 1960's Bonneville fairings. Triumph had it first, rears earlier and you are reporting on a Triumph Bonneville descendant. Right?
@BikeShedMotoCo
@BikeShedMotoCo 6 жыл бұрын
To my ignorant eye it looks reminiscent of the fairing on the '72 imola-winning GP bike ridden by Paul Smart, who's Ducati Sport Classic 1000 replica (which I also own) which I believe was a design reference for Triumph in creating this new bike. My pint was subjective not educational or factual. However, bike design references are circular and often subjective, so I bow to your superior knowledge.

Look up Percy Tait the Triumph tester from the 1960's. Learn! Listen, my 1976 Triumph T140V raced and won against every motorcycle on the road for 10 consecutive years. Never lost! I would say Triumph did a hell of a job developing the Bonnevilles. For you to be ignorant about that is a damn shame.

I think Triumph used their own designs as a reference - not from a Ducati, but an earlier Triumph.

A house with old furniture !! You left the old furniture in this bike the motor and a car without a radio really this isn’t a 1970s Capri and the “Hoxton” why didn’t you call it the tron bike that’s how cheesy it is .humans ruin everything that’s why we end up with a bunch of used motorcycle shops with a load of shit . Which is where your bloody Hoxton will end up or you will put it back to stock “motorcycles are not fashion statements “just ride them enjoy it .

Not at all. The Hoxton is about to get another round of customisation for the Autumn season of shows, and for riding next spring. My last two Triumph customs sold at a profit. ... As for the Tron bike, that was my first project in 2011, so been there. ...but thanks for your wisdom..

...and I forgot to add, I ride ALL my bikes, on motorways, B-roads, fast A, and on-track. If you check our video of the Cafe Racer Cup you'll see me at Lydden Hill putting in a 55sec lap, on my 'custom' Thruxton.
