When discerning the deadly Clitocybe Rivulosa (fools funnel) from the Clitocybe Geotropa (troopers funnel) can the following being used to assist identification: 1. The umba (nipple) of a troopers funnel always remains, unlike that of the fools funnel which disappears once it turns convex 2. Fools funnels don't exceed 10cm in diameter, unlike troopers which can get quite big. 3. Fools funnels and Troopers won't occupy the same fairy ring as each other.

I don't know if I have the fools funnel or the real thing. Mines a more distinct funnel. It's not mature like these but LOOKS a lot like them . The first one I decided to touch without gloves🙄

I found a tonne of these yesterday, but hadn't ever seen one before so I didn't pick any for the table. I was just about to start traipsing through a few books to find out what they were - so this was a very well timed upload :). Thanks, great video as always!

As always, well presented and highly educational. I found my first big troop today tucked into some fir trees right by the side of the road whilst our walking the dog: about 100 yards from my front door! Thanks so much for all you do to entertain and inform!

I found a load of what I thought were these guys but August time, do they come up earlier in the season I.e around bolete and chanterelle time?? Only I found some in same pattern same size massive thick white fibery stems but no nipple in the concave cap and the gills were albeit decurrent looked to sinous off into the stipe at the end.. would this be the deadly fools do we think or a delicious troop..... 🤔🤔

Hi Marlowe, I was studying this mushroom since finding some in the woods near my house, and trying to eliminate any toxic lookalikes. I've come up with the frosty funnel from my book. When using the 12 cm guide you give in your book, I guess that excludes the frosty funnel since they can't get that big? and is 12 cm just the stem, or the whole mushroom, as a minimum?

What trees do they grow with?
@syv_313 жыл бұрын
More often found in broadleaf woods but it's common to see them in open fields as well. Please note that it's also likely to mistake it for the poisonous Clitocybe phyllophila, (they don't mention that in the video) whose cap can grow up to 12cm.

Hi Marlow. I was told that mushrooms become poisonous if they are exposed to minus temperatures? Assuming that’s not true, judging by what you’ve said here. Can you clarify this please. Thanks!

I'm more concerned about mistaking it for Clitocybe phyllophila, which can get up to 12cm in diameter. Please note the colour of the cap when foraging I. geotropa, although the Frosty funnel (C. phyllophila) can look almost identical. The most secure way of distinguishing between the two is the size and diameter of the stem.
@LISALOO19782 жыл бұрын

The ones in the video are off white, as they have been exposed to freezing weather. However, they are usually white, often pure white. Grow in long lines as on this video, or large fairy rings. Nice eating, and quite easy to find, as most foragers ignore them.
