The monsoons and savannahs of the tropics - home to billions of us on Planet Earth, where the tropical heat is near-constant, and where the seasons are defined by rain and drought.
From the Caribbean and Brazil, through the endless savannah of West and East Africa to southern India and South-East Asia, the tropical wet and dry climates stretch all around the equatorial zone, encompassing huge populations.

Hello Geodiode @Geodiode , good day 🖐 Would you be so kind as to help me please clarify my doubts? If the city of San Pedro Sula, in Honduras, has a monsoon climate (Am), a savannah climate (Aw) or a rainy equatorial climate (Af), then Most of the internet pages are confusing and because of its precipitation I don't know what type A tropical climate is in San Pedro Sula and I know that there is almost no rain for 2 months, which are March and April and I think it is the dry season. Do you know which of the 3 tropical climates is? or does it have 2 climates? thank you for your help? 🤔🤔🤔

We were always taught at school that the Philippines was tropical country period, there were never a distinction and it just make sense that it could be divided as there is a difference between the Northern and Southern Philippines. For example, the Southern part seldom receives typhoons unlike the Northern part and now that we had said goodbye to Habagat (South West Monsoon) and now that Amihan (North East Moonson) is the prevailing winds the cool air is very welcome indeed and the chance of having typhoons is minimal unlike in the South the temperature will remain hot and the last months of the year is when they experience storms despite it being few. Thanks for the video!

@@Geodiode April and May is our hottest months, we only have 2 seasons the Dry and Wet Season but the Dry is further divided to Cool Dry Season from October to February this is when Amihan is the prevailing winds bringing cold air from Northern China and would lower temperatures, last year Cordillera Valley in the North of Luzon recorded a temperature of 7.3°C and the Hot Dry Season from March to May, this year was particularly hot to be honest, April had brought a 51°C heat index, prompting PAG-ASA to issue warnings. It's getting hotter every year.

When it comes to heat, subtropical summers get WAY hotter than tropical climates ever get. Hawaii, the only US state in the tropics, is also the only state to never hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit. I lived with Nigerians in Atlanta, Georgia, and they always said that summers in Georgia were hotter than the hottest part of the dry season in Nigeria.

on the island of Java, Indonesia. The monsoon forest climate type is spread in the central and eastern parts of the island. The monsoon climate type in Java has very high rainfall. Many areas in Java have a monsoon forest climate type and have rainfall > 4500 mm per year. Even the area with the highest rainfall in Indonesia is Baturraden, Central Java which has rainfall > 7000 mm per year and is included in the monsoon forest climate type. even though Indonesia itself is dominated by the tropical rainforest climate type which can be found raining every year. This condition caused Java to be called the rice island (Yawadwipa) because it was very suitable for rice cultivation. However, this condition also causes Java to be very vulnerable to flooding in September - April due to extreme rainfall.

Tropical Savanna climate (wet and dry) covers my region in western India. I love this climate. Decent and sometimes above average rainfall (1500mm) for a few months. Temperatures are pleasant during this wet season usually not exceeding 30°C and not below 20°C. There is lush greenery everywhere. Summers are somewhat unbearable due to hot temperatures but they do not exceed 40°C with cooler nights and winters are dry and extremely pleasant with the mean temperature between 15-20°C. Rarely temperatures drop to single digits in celsius in winters. There is tropical monsoon climate bordering my region due to the presence of western ghats and where there is abundant rainfall. There is a region in our district where it rained over 10,000 mm twice in the last 15 years.

My personal favorite episode of yours. The climate zone is interesting to me as someone from the temperate zone and the visual and musics are oustanding. Your description of the weather patterns and animation are also fantastic. These videos still surprise me when I come back compared to everything else I see on youtube. I remember going from having no interest in space at all to being very interested after seeing a show called How the Universe Works because it was simply a fantastic show with the animations, the music, and the narration. I think many people would find this video similar for climate, which you don't see much on except for climate change related news which is a different matter than exploring today's great climate zones. That is something I see as being truly valuable as opposed to just entertainment for the sake of entertainment which is a massive part of today's world, or worse yet attention grabbing with negative connotations.

I experience this climate in the Caribbean, specifically trinidad and Tobago. We don't have enough high elevation area for high amounts of montane transpiration so our rivers are small. January to may is practically a desert, raining only a few times per month. June to December are rainy. Floods occur in September and October. Forests are more lush at high elevations. I'm moving to a higher elevation location in a valley next year.

The weather that proliferated ancient Humans when you think about it ;) The savannahs of east Africa were the birth of human origin well originally our ancestors were more adapted to rainforest climate and were more arboreal but as things got warmer that gave away to the savannahs and deserts of East Africa. This lead to bipedalism and our upward gait and one thing led to another.

I'm kinda late but I have to say I love this channel and it's knowledge of climate and geography. I find you describing the different climate zones in individual videos to be a series and it provides a ton of informative and interesting content. Also my favorite climate zone is probably either subtropical highlands or oceanic. I live in central florida where it's hot and humid for most of the year and it's not the most enjoyable at times, but it's definitely something that one can get used to. I do like these two other climates for a reason though, driving just 600 miles north I was camping in the Great Smoky Mountains during the summer I noticed how much cooler it was compared to back in Florida. Even though it's at 35 degrees north and considered to be on the northern edge of a subtropical climate, the climate is still pretty uniform and similar to florida at sea level during the summer. In the mountains however, as elevation increased the temperature decreased which made it stand out a lot, and being the only mountain range near the east coast of the us, it definitely brought another climate other than humid subtropical in the southeastern US. I definitely prefer roughly the same rainfall year round due to orographic precipitation and the subtropical highland climate offers a break from the heat during the summer, which are the main reasons I like this climate type.
@arcturus9366
@arcturus9366 3 жыл бұрын
@@Geodiode Yeah it can get a bit chilly here in the winter but the proximity to the gulf of mexico and atlantic ocean as well as it being among the lowest latitudes in the US definitely take the edge off the winter weather. And I can consider central florida to be a transition zone between a more temperate climate and a more tropical climate, because during the winter areas around Miami can be up to 10 degrees warmer than here in central fl, while places like Tallahassee and Gainesville are slightly colder and can get into the 30s, unlike where I am. I went camping in North FL and it was probably the only times I experienced temperatures below 40 this winter. I think temperatures also have to do with how close one is to a large body of water, especially one like the gulf of mexico.

I've been up there, and I enjoy it. The summers are like Florida's, though slighly cooler and less humid, but I can enjoy the heat and rain for 3-4 months before cold fronts. The winters are way colder than Florida's but snow is uncommon and doesn't stay around for more than a day. I live in Florida currently and don't mind the heat but I think I've had enough of the intensity of the heat and the millions of people moving here. The trend of Florida's temperature rising and population increasing, it may as well be Atlantis in 100 years, lol

Yes apparently the diseases in tropical regions centre around the populated areas. If you go way out into the rainforest where there are no population centres the diseases diminish. For example, the mosquitoes carry diseases in populated areas or near populated areas, however the mosquitoes way out in the rainforest don't. Although there's no electricity out in the rainforest so bit of a catch-22.

Can you cover a bit why this happen base on the climate and topography or current environment status. What would be be real reason for this rapid catastrophe . I love your video btw! I know commenting on an old video is like shouting in the wilderness but I live in the tropics. Kerala, near the foothills of the Western Ghats. We have the Monsoon type climate and I have to say that the Savannah type has large variations from what I can see here. Over to the leeward side of the Ghats, in Tamil Nadu, the adjoining areas are Tropical Savannah and they look like the African Savannah (especially after the winter rain spell they have, yes there is an As variant, the tropical cousin of the Mediterranean as I would like to call it). However, the capital of Kerala, Trivandrum, is also tropical Savannah, Aw, but because of a shorter dry season, no rain shadow and moderating influence of the sea looks quite different to the Savannah in Tamil Nadu. I know the Tropical climate is always written off as being hot - and it is - but during the monsoons temperatures never really go over 30*C here and even after the North West monsoons, the North East monsoon season makes it quite cloudy, shading a good part of the day. And even in the dry season, it never really gets as hot as it does in the North (Cwa). Which goes to over 40*C, here it never really goes over 37*C. Then again the North Indian Cwa is atypically hot.

@@Geodiode Ah! Yes, the Monsoon coupled with climate change is wreaking havoc here for the past 2 years. We had a once in 100 year flood and tons of landslide the past 2 years. It also doesn't help that the warming is causing more cyclones in the Arabian sea (which usually would never come close to the Kerala coast, but now they occasionally do). I still however doubt whether our monsoons are strong compared to parts of the North East (I mean they top the world list in rain afterall). About Tamil Nadu, people living near the coast have it better (people from Kerala still complain that Chennai is a hot hell in the Summer), people near the Ghats get cooler winds (after they have dropped off most of their moisture) in the monsoon and it helps mitigate some heat. Even in Kerala, coastal cities have summer temperatures well below 35*C but their nights are humid and warm, I live near the Ghats (still the low lands by international standards ~100 to 200 meters above sea level) and it gets much hotter during summer days but much cooler during winter nights. Here the reverse effect occurs, winds that bring winter rain to Tamil Nadu helps cool us off and we get dry cool nights (18*C even, 2019 was abnormally cooler, some nights dropped to 8*C). Then there is also the effect of Ghats I noticed, at night high pressure sometimes develop and these winds cool us down (which is strange!). I am glad this isn't a necro thread! On a side note, could you do a video on the warming of the Tibetan Plateau. I mean it never really warms above 25*C or so on average and I have a really hard time believing that causing such an influence on the monsoons and yet it does. For some reason Plateaus and Mountains do set up low pressure belts on warm spells but people in those places never really feel 'hot' (say never above 28*C at times) and yet there is heating and low pressure enough to pull in moisture.

@AvoniasStratigis
@AvoniasStratigis 3 жыл бұрын
@@arghakoley8560 Here too the rainy season is quite pleasant (looking at the climate data, we may have similar monsoon temperatures). It is misty and mostly cloudy for 6 months here, our 'winter' if any, is during Sept, Oct and Nov when fog rolls downhill and the days and nights are quite pleasant. In Dec-Jan, the dry season hits and the day temperatures are 30*C but nights are still pleasant, unless there is an MJO, then evenings can be humid. The summer is never insanely hot, but in Trivandrum, due to the presence of sea nearby, it is humid. And you are right, in TVM even in winters it is humid. However, I think the altitude of ~700m works in your favor, much like Bangalore, giving you a pleasant climate overall. I wish I had your winters here though, mild and cool. We never hit 7*C as you guys do. Unless of course, you are in a hill top similar to ~700m altitude.

I'm currently living in the Philippines, planning to move to Vancouver, Canada mostly for the mild climate. I swear, if you got the money, you'd spend it on air conditioning year round! The heat makes us less productive and more emotional, but living here for years at least I could try to tolerate it better than you temperate folks. That's the only upside of living here, tolerance to 35° heat. :(

You should do subtropical savanna and monsoon, in morocco especially around the northern oriental province, I live in a small town, you can find a semi humid savanna, many trees exist but its more dominated by grass, the average temperature is 20.3 °c so I refer it as subtropical savanna and the precipitation is about 580mm, though not as much as tropical savannas, it has a mediterranean like climate but its not fully mediterranean due to the rif mountains ahead and sometimes there is light precipitation in July and early August.

I live in the capital of Brazil, Brasília, further inland and closely bordering a hot semi-arid climate of Northeast Brazil but with subtropical highland influences due to the height. It was very comfortable 10 years ago, but with the growth of the city, deforestation (within and away from the city) and global warming it is getting increasingly hot and the rainny season is shortening, with fast strong rainfall followed by days without precipitation (this is problematic because the water flows so fast that it doesn't penetrate the soil properly to replenish the many small creeks we have here).

Central Vietnam, in my opinion, has one of the most unusual and extreme (sub)tropical monsoon climates. The dry season (March to August) sees the scorching sun, while the rainy season (Sep-next Feb) is literal doom and gloom. The skies are persistently gray and most of the year’s 2-3 meters of precipitation drops from the gray clouds. Combined with the rugged terrain of the region, catastrophic flash floods and landslides are commonplace. Occasionally, when tropical cyclones hit, it can bring one day’s rainfall total up to that of a year. Moving south, there’s some what less (frequent) doom, but the gloom is still somewhat there. However, it’s balanced by a longer dry season, starting back in Jan-Feb, which makes Nha Trang an attractive holiday destination. Hope it gets featured in the climate casebook!
