Əmrah Cəfərov For years since 1967 after the British left Aden, Socotra went down hill due to lack of investment from the South Yemeni government. Then, the unification of the two Yemens (North and South) came about in 1990 and unfortunately the decline of Socotra Island continued downwards. That's what happens when the people of the Island realise their own government don't seem to care, so naturally they will be inclined to support foreign countries like Saudi and UAE who come to the Island uninvited and shower the poor locals with money. Perfectly normal human response. What a crying Shame.

Truth to be told, Socotra is not for Yemen, its kind of disputed between Somalia and Yemen and since the two countries share almost everything such as people, culture, religion, trade and so on, they decided not to kill or lose their brotherhood over it and opted to negotiate but wait for suitable time since Somalia was in conflict with Ethiopia and Kenya over boundaries and Yemen was divided and struggling to re-unit. but time never came because of the civil wars and other hardships.

I was on Socotra in 1983. At that time (from 1977 to 1987), I periodically, on visits, worked in a joint Soviet-Yemeni-Swedish company that was engaged in the extraction and export of fish products from the PDRY. So, we sent shrimp and lobster to Europe: Italy, Spain, Sweden, etc.; and cuttlefish to Singapore and Japan. Fish, as by-catch, we handed over in Aden to the domestic market. I got to Socotra as an English speaker. I had to accompany our guy to the Soviet doctor who worked on the island, who received a minor injury at work at sea.. There I remember meeting a shepherd: he was herding goats on the coast. His goats actually ate wooden planks thrown out of the ocean. And they were knee-high to me. I have never seen such small goats eating wooden boxes before. I didn't even know they existed. But I liked the Arab: he was so kind to me that he was ready to give me his only wealth, a tin can thrown ashore by the sea, from which he drank green tea. The tea was without sugar, which is not worth talking about. Did he live right on the shore in a hut made of the same planks that were thrown out of the ocean by a wave. I see that life on the island has not changed much in forty years.

@@Harvyydent most of them are just Arabized and speak a South Semitic language called Soqotri, related to Mehri. Many are mixed between Soqotri, Swahili Bantus and possibly, Somalis.

Although Yemenis are residing now, this is a Somali Island.. Our lovely brothers from Yemen will still be living in the Island as we lived side by side for 100's of years.. But sooner or later the UN will legislate the ownership of the Island to Somalia when the case is ready and done.. Its very unfortunate Emirates want to disrupt and steal the land of many fellow Muslim brothers.. Very unfortunate 🤐

@@nezar2381997 The Yemenis have settled in the area recently, especially the people of the Mahre. The land is in Somalia territory and is not located in Yemen Since Yemenis do live in suqadra in Somalia territory , it does not mean that they should own the land Yemen and Somalia share a vast maritime border. When the boundaries are known, the people living in that land have the right to live in that land but must they accept under Somalia government and law , otheewise the confilit will come between both country becoase we as somalin sees that may can be And it will be known to be an occupation

This island is well-known among tarantula enthusiasts - the Monocentropus balfouri is one of very few colonial tarantulas, and it's prized in the pet trade both for its ease of care and breeding, it's social behavior, and it's stunning dusty blue color!
