Əmrah Cəfərov For years since 1967 after the British left Aden, Socotra went down hill due to lack of investment from the South Yemeni government. Then, the unification of the two Yemens (North and South) came about in 1990 and unfortunately the decline of Socotra Island continued downwards. That's what happens when the people of the Island realise their own government don't seem to care, so naturally they will be inclined to support foreign countries like Saudi and UAE who come to the Island uninvited and shower the poor locals with money. Perfectly normal human response. What a crying Shame.

Very nice, perfect and a professional documentary ! Loved ! I’ve seen a documentary on socotra 10 years back, a very much deserted place and no population. As this shows here, it has transformed into a habitable town. Let’s hope tourists don’t destroy this but the nature and the time take their tolls ❤

I was on Socotra in 1983. At that time (from 1977 to 1987), I periodically, on visits, worked in a joint Soviet-Yemeni-Swedish company that was engaged in the extraction and export of fish products from the PDRY. So, we sent shrimp and lobster to Europe: Italy, Spain, Sweden, etc.; and cuttlefish to Singapore and Japan. Fish, as by-catch, we handed over in Aden to the domestic market. I got to Socotra as an English speaker. I had to accompany our guy to the Soviet doctor who worked on the island, who received a minor injury at work at sea.. There I remember meeting a shepherd: he was herding goats on the coast. His goats actually ate wooden planks thrown out of the ocean. And they were knee-high to me. I have never seen such small goats eating wooden boxes before. I didn't even know they existed. But I liked the Arab: he was so kind to me that he was ready to give me his only wealth, a tin can thrown ashore by the sea, from which he drank green tea. The tea was without sugar, which is not worth talking about. Did he live right on the shore in a hut made of the same planks that were thrown out of the ocean by a wave. I see that life on the island has not changed much in forty years.
