Just finished the book yesterday and came back to watch this. Great review, Mike! Regarding the title of THE WISDOM OF CROWDS. It makes me think of another quote by Friedrich Nietzsche and maybe this is where Mr. Abercrombie is drawing inspiration from: “In individuals, insanity is rare; but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.”

I'm pretty sure that this is correct. It's stated that it rhymes with pricker, which if pronounced with an English accent sounds like prickah.

“The lion’s share of development...” I had to smile while groaning (or should I say “growling”). Awesome review! I’m delighted to hear you’re enthusiastic about this book. I completely agree about the unpredictability of Abercrombie’s plots. Also, well said about the standalones. By the way, I pronounce “Rikke” the same way you do. “Ricky” sounds weird to me. Doesn’t she say in A Little Hatred that her name rhymes with “pricker”, which, if you’re English, you’d say like “prick-ah”? So, I’m sticking with our pronunciation. Finally, those character arcs sound amazing. That’s what it’s all about. I’m especially interested in Rikke and Orso. While reading A Little Hatred, I had the same thought you expressed about the elder characters being a bit like what happened in the Star Wars films. Time for the young ones to take over and repeat the mistakes of their elders, I suppose. Well, I’m more excited than ever to start this book in a week! Thanks!

Working my way through Best Served Cold after reading the original trilogy earlier this year - OMG, returning has made me really understand how much I love everything about Abercrombie! Planning to pace out the rest of the stand-alones so I can read the Age of Madness once Book 3 comes out next year!

Ah. I freaking love this book. Immediately started re-reading the original trilogy after I finished Trouble with Peace. All the hints of other old characters involved in what is going on and the many hands stirring the pot for book 3... I can't even write straight sentences I just want book 3 - NOW, JOE! NOW, DAMNIT! Also, with industrial revolution and an age of commerce knocking at the door - anyone up for a First Law standalone Pirate novel? As well as at least one book with Jappo as a PoV character, thank you.

On the point of the older characters, coming into this trilogy I was really hoping, now that their kids were involved, that if something were to happen to the kids the older characters would burn the world to the ground. I was thinking this still could happen going into this one, but after you saying some older character are more like cameos it seems I may not get what I want. But that's okay, I LOVED the first book, and of course it was nice seeing some familiar faces and a metal eye. But I'm surprised this trilogy is passing the torch as much as it has. But, the Logan and Shivers fight needs to happen, that's my 1 and only hope. Great review as always, looking forward to next week.
@archlectoryarvi2873
@archlectoryarvi2873 4 жыл бұрын
Logen would be super old at this point. Even the Bloody 9 can't beat age (as we've seen in Red Country). Shivers isn't exactly spring chicken but I can easily imagine him curbstomping Logen in his current state. All in all I don't think Logen returning would be a good idea cuz Red Country was a great send-off for his character but if he did reappear I'd rather read about him and Dogman just chilling out and reminiscing about old times. Also Shivers has laid his beef with Logen to rest so there isn't much of a reason to fight in the first place.

Just finished the book yesterday, waited almost a year so I don't have to wait that long for the last one in the trilogy. Being a Norwegian, it's difficult not to pronounce "Rikke" in the very same way as the completely common Norwegian female name ... "Rikke". Just google translate the name from Norwegian, and you'll get the correct sounds ("RikkÆH"). That is, if this is what Joe originally intended! but then again, he (probably) doesn't speak Norwegian.. so who knows?

Tough to say. The stand alone have an advantage bc they're not tied to the other books. That said, Trouble with peace is in the upper tier. I would have said little hatred, the heroes, and best served cold were my top 3 prior to trouble. Trouble is better than hatred. I really like the direction Joe went with this. Anyone interested in this series, first I envy you. But please, read these books in order. Original trilogy, stand alones including sharp ends and then age of madness. You do yourself a disservice otherwise. It's great how much Abercrombie fans still have so much love for the original trilogy and there almost seems a mentality to keep wanting the og characters. Dont get me wrong, I love the original, but I have never read an author whos increase in writing skill, as the series progresses, has been so readily apparent.

Really torn between BSC and the Heroes. BSC I think is the better in a classically structured way and probably his most cohesive. Almost like Joe is just showing everybody he can do a more orthodox approach and absolutley kill it, but ultimately prefers to kill it and them some with his own approach. There is just something about the heroes that's got that indefinable something that's the calling card of brilliance and true art. To me, at least. But as a whole, this new trilogy has cemented him as one of the contemporary greats. Just getting started on part VI (about 150 pages left) and it is wonderful. And incredibly relevant. Mark my words. This new trilogy will give this man a lot more recognition. May take a while, like Martin, but just watch.

@@calliope9th217 I'm in the middle of an 1000 page epic at the moment that will take me about two weeks to finish, then I'm going to immediately start The Trouble with Peace, which arrived at my doorstep the day of release and nows sits on my night stand next to my bed, calling me to open its beautiful pages. I'm so excited for it, The First law is my favorite series and Abercrombie my favorite living writer. I have trouble (heh) imagining him ever being able to top Best Served Cold for me though. To me it is still his greatest novel to date.

Also, you are pronouncing Rikke correctly. In the book she makes jokes about how her name rhymes with things like "Shitty Rikke" for example... it's because people constantly pronounce her name wrong (in the First Law world). When she introduces herself to Orso she actually says how to pronounce her name "It's Rikke... rhymes with pricka (pricker)". And of course the narrator, someone that's never pronounced a name wrong, pronounces it the way you do.

While I absolutely love the world he has built and brilliance of the new character in their own right, I am seriously missing the mystique and fantastical elements of the OG trilogy. Hard to compare to the likes of The Bloody Nine who was possessed by a demon, or Ferro with her diluted demon blood......the wondering if the Magi are just eaters. Or Fenris the Feared as a hulking villain to overcome by own demonic possessed hulking villain, Logan. The new books are really well done and so interesting in their own respects I just think we are missing the fantasy of the series. I want to see maybe one of the new characters become an eater. Leo in his current, ruined state, seems like the perfect candidate! Seems like Leo has been set up now similarly to Glokta, Hero turned maimed and disfigured shadow of his former self. What about Gurkhul? Will we ever really explore it? We learn of the demise of Bayaz' rival there at the hands of a "demon". Was it Ferro? Was it Logan? So yea, alot of open questions from the original trilogy and stand alone novels left unfulfilled that I miss the magical, demonic mystery.
