I’ve grown to accept Zilla. Even though he’s not as popular as Godzilla himself, he has been getting put to use as of late, especially in the IDW comics. While I’m not getting my hopes up, I think he would qualify for inclusion in the MonsterVerse as a Hollow Earth Titan that is presented as a species distantly related to the Gojira family, but is different enough to qualify as it’s own genus.

One idea I had was doing a version of Son of Godzilla or Godzilla Junior, but instead of Godzilla raising him, Kong finds him as an egg that's been preserved and is taken in by Monarch. I’d like that. I was about 4-5 years old when that movie came out and it was the first movie I went to theaters for, and it took another four or five years before I realized how bad it was. All the memories I have with the merchandising and advertising made it so much bigger than that shit movie and I still like the monster design itself. Agreed. I always had a hard time with the anthropomorphic original. Ironically (because of your name) I always thought the design was influenced by Alien. Very lithe and overtly predatory, like a jumbo xeno. I have far more respect for the original films as an adult, but as a kid I disliked how completely not scary the chubby OG design was. Since I was a huge Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers fan(what a dork), I wonder if I was subconsciously noting the similarities between OG Godzilla and those goofy MMPR villains.

Did you know Clive Barker was one of the directors considered to direct Godzilla? There's a video showing a series of AI-produced images about what would have happened if Clive Barker directed Godzilla. And I will say, they are SPOOKY. The plot would have also been about Godzilla as a biblical monster that would bring about the End of Days come 1999 before the Millennium.

I was still in single digits when this movie came out, and it honestly scared me seeing it on the big screen, so I do have a soft spot for that otherwise cheesy monster movie. Still, looking at the previous versions by Steve Miner and Jan de Bont they do have more personality and fidelity to the Toho original than the 98 film. Honestly, if Sony just had a little more faith in De Bont and scaled back ever so slightly, they might have been able to greenlight a movie that pleased the fanbase at the time. Think Twister (also De Bont's film) with Godzilla. Ironically, the 90s also saw a turbulent production for none other than Peter Jackson's King Kong originally meant for 1998,. You can guess which movie (as well as Disney's Mighty Joe Young) led to Universal pulling the plug on that initial version of Jackson's Kong. I wonder if you guys would be interested in covering that story and what you would think of a pulpier, more tongue in cheek version of that film?

Checking out the “Godzilla 3D” story, I do find it uncanny how bits and pieces resemble the ‘98 and 2014. I thought maybe they recycled bits of it, like how 2014 and KOTM recycled bits of the '94 script. But as I thought it over, I concluded it was likely a coincidence. Here’s the examples. They’re pretty small, but when you notice them, they may stand out. 1998: Besides 3D!Godzilla having a more T-Rex look, there was also a plot point of Godzilla having offspring - like in “Gorgo”, the infant is held captive, prompting Godzilla’s ramapage. Like in the '98 movie, 3D!Godzilla would go on a final rampage when it’s offspring is killed…only to be killed by missiles. 2014: The main character is a military officer and a family man, returning home after his tour…only to be pulled back into this mess when Godzilla awakens. Unlike 2014, the main character's son is part of the story as he’s kidnapped by these human antagonists, which I guess you could compare to “King of the Monsters”. The son is also caught up in the action in the stories climax and is even the one to deliver the killing blow to Godzilla.

Return of Godzilla and Godzilla vs Biollante also draw from this script somewhat interestingly, mainly with the general Cold War anxiety and an accidental strike being a plot point in the former and the anti- nuclear fission missiles being used against Godzilla in the latter. Plus, the deleted scene from G14 where the Air Force and the navy face off against Godzilla on Alcatraz is insanely similar to the 1983 climax. Safe to say elements of it found their way all through the franchise

1998 is hated because it wasn’t Godzilla. He was vulnerable to conventional weapons which is a no-no. Godzilla is immune to all types of weapons unless they were made specifically for him. And they often times fail even afterwards. Godzilla also has an insanely fast regeneration factor that heals him in seconds so even if you damage him, he would be healed completely in a matter of seconds and keep on coming. And the lack of atomic breath and other nuclear abilities is the other reason. The design, ability and character are not there. That’s why Toho made him into a separate kaiju and called him “Zilla” instead. He will never be considered an American Godzilla incarnation anymore.

I love this Godzilla. I love classic G. I love Legendary G. The only G I've never really been pleased with was what we here in the west call "Godzilla's Revenge." Being that is more of a cut-n-paste movie of old films with very little new stuff and Minilla talking, etc, it's easily the worst one of the series. G '98 is a good proto-G mobster film with the animated series sequel being the proper version of Tristar's G. And I'm here for all of it. From the old and new comics to the old and new cartoons to the films, I find something good in all things G (that I've actually seen).

I too grew up on this film. It launched my love for Godzilla and it greatly saddened me when people started hating on Zilla. I understand now why people aren't a fan but the hate is extreme in my opinion. I just remember how much I loved Zilla at the time.

As a kid I hated 98 Zilla. Zilla is similar to ugly sonic before they made the redesign. Second they got rid of his atomic breathe which made Godzilla a powerful creature. It’s like taking away the Kamehameha from Goku or any of this attacks

Honestly, I don't mind the '98 movie as its own kaiju movie, especially since, when not viewed as Godzilla, I actually really like the '98 design. And I'll actually give Toho props for deciding to rebrand it as its own kaiju, even if it was only originally to get revenge on it, because it's allowed others like IDW to give it a bit more credit and increase its popularity. Plus, there's just something surreal about seeing Godzilla and Zilla fight.

As a Japanese who grew up with Heisei G era, I did not like Godzilla 1998. It's cool monster lizard movie but not Godzilla movie. I thought Godzilla without atomic breath is unacceptable and should not killed by missile. I had a stigma that Hollywood should not touch Godzilla until Godzilla 2014.

My first Godzilla movie was Mothra vs. Godzilla on NYC channel 9 WWOR TV. In the late 70's early 80's they would make September monster month where they ran creature features and then October were more traditional monster movies for Halloween. I have watched every single one of the big guys films and tv shows. My favorite US or non-Toho version was Godzilla 1985. It was the first one I saw in theater.

I feel if they just changed up the backstory a bit more to be less Godzilla-esk,used a completely different name and roar this would have been a beloved Kaiju classic. Unfortunately that never happened, and I feel the fact that Zilla is/was supposed to be Godzilla hurts it the most.

This was an awesome movie. Think of it as a war movie repackaged into a monster flick. Whenever the creature comes into contact with the US military all Hell on Earth breaks loose. Side winder missiles slash through the air, tracer rounds fill up the sky, machine guns pop off with explosive energy, commanders screaming at the top of their lungs, jet fighters unloading their rockets onto targets, submarines duelling with the monster and blowing up eachother in the process. This movie was fucking lit. Epic in every way if you love guns, explosions and American soldiers. Plus the creature design was cool as hell and really gave it a badass look and feel. This movie came jam packed with high octane, heavy density incediary napalm action. And I loved every second of it. Pure 90s cinema.

My guy the military couldn't hit a creature that was as big as a building with their stormtrooper aim, the movie is fully aware of how bad their aim is lol. Plus this thing runs 300 miles per hour but can't catch a car going less than that?. Fun dumb movie but it was better off as a remake of beast from 20,000 fathoms. Fun movie but still undeniably flawed. The 90s had MUCH better movies than this. *Cough* jurassic Park *cough* Also should I mention it flopped in America and only made it's money back once it was released into other territories?.

@@DestinyAwaits19 And yet it wasn't the huge financial success Tristar was hoping for, here's a fun fact, Sony executives saw the movie before its released and weren't expecting it to make money because of how bad it was so they pushed more marketing hoping the hype will give them money which it didn't. The movie being a success doesn't make it good, it's backlash killed any chances of a movie sequel, jokes on you lol

Godzilla '98 made a huge impact on my life when I was a little kid growing up with VHS tapes for movies and TV. I was first introduced to the creature through this movie back when I was loving Jurassic Park. As a kid, I've always loved dinosaurs since I watched Jurassic Park. A few years later, I got my first Toho Godzilla movie on VHS. So, I owe most of my Godzilla fandom to Sony's Godzilla'98. That will be Godzilla to my eyes, and it will only be Zilla when I see two of them.

My biggest memory from this movie was how good of a job the studio did keeping the new Godzilla design a secret. The trailer was EPIC! As a lifelong Godzilla fan I was ready with tickets on the day this premiered. Quite unfortunately I made a decision to go to a Target store that was near the theater to grab some (much cheaper) candy first, and to my horror they had the toy figures out on display! The anticipation I had bottled up for months was immediately eviscerated. Oh well, I do still own the absolutely gigantic articulated Zilla figure that was for sale in those days...

2:49 haven’t seen anyone else comment on this but I suspect that William Stout commissioned storyboards not from “Dan” Stevens but from his good friend Dave Stevens, comic book artist and creator of the Rocketeer. When unavailable himself, Stout also recommended Dave for work doing early storyboards for Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I had the same experience with Godzilla as you did. I had seen a few of the English dubbed movies because my dad recorded them on VHS when they would play on TV (still had the old commercials too). So when Godzilla 98 came out in theaters I was so stoked to see it and honestly I still love that movie and Zilla. You can call it mental gymnastics, but Zilla's concept is easier to swallow if you think of her as a separate species of Godzilla. Like an Eagle and a Hawk are both birds, just different species. Godzilla and Zilla are both Gojiras, just different species.
