The Miami race is promoted by FOM, so there is no sanctioning fee unlike Spa. Events like Melbourne still pay a $35m USD sanctioning fee (more than Spa's $20m USD), of which $15m AUD is subsidised by the state government. It seems that FOM are hedging their bets on whether Spa or Kyalami can offer more money for them, before deciding on which race of the two to put on the calendar. Such greed from FOM is unfortunate, of course.

"They added 3000 seats." Let me draw your attention to Zandvoort, back on the F1 calendar in 2021 after 40+ years of absence. Because of covid restrictions, they 'only' admitted 70.000 people. 2022, the restrictions had been lifted, it was flat sold out for the 105.000 people allowed onto the grounds. If Zandvoort can sell 35.000 extra tickets, Miami should have no problems selling 3000 extra.

There are 2 things here. Ticket pricing and also that for the $$ this year they also have Las Vegas, which granted is a much more fun city than Miami. And if you want a proper race with a circuit there is COTA which is an awesome experience and has been selling out consistently and the prices are more manageable. All that said F1 is expensive in the US.

Conventions are charging $70-80 for a single day when they were ~$50 not long ago, and some of the centers, which originally weren't cheap, have become so high-priced that major events have left rather than spike their prices to attendees (things such as increasing costs by over 40% on the back end for the exact same things literally because "well, you haven't been able to be here, so we have to make the money back somehow" is ludicrous)

And Vegas isn't going to be any less ourageous. COTA is the best of the 3 current American racetracks, and if Vegas and Miami stop COTA from becoming any more of a spectacle than it already is, that might be a good thing for the F1 scene in America. The 'influencers' can clog up Miami and Vegas like they do at Monaco, just leave COTA for actual F1 fans.

$650 for a GA shocked me... then I remember that when the proposed F1 race in New Jersey was floated, my friend was expecting GA here to be $350. Add in the fact that it's about 10 years later, the recession cranking up prices on everything, and the fact that it IS still basically in Miami, as opposed to on city streets of another state than the city it'd probably be linked to... it doesn't feel as high anymore. Like if it was $550, I would've just gone "Hmmm... yeah, sounds about right". But now they're jacking up prices AGAIN? Yeah, this is gonna start turning into Super Bowl levels of pain soon.

Miami local here, I went to the race last year. Purchased 4-day grandstands in the Marina through F1 experiences. I enjoyed the race and the amenities, however, it was definitely a one and done ordeal for me. I spent $2k for each ticket. It was just a once in a life time experience to go a debut race in my hometown so I bit the cost. Did I have fun? Very much so. Will I go again to a Miami race? No. There’s just a lot more that proper circuit can offer, as well as having a genuine crowd, most of those in attendance were just there for the hype.

I understand the importance of celebrities, glamor, etc to F1, and have tended to laugh at fans that complain about it. With all the talk of new fans and venues one thing that NEVER comes up is the actual racing. We need 2 lists of circuits. Fan circuits and corporate ones. In Montreal grandstand tickets cost A LOT but during every session except the race we could sit wherever we wanted, check out the action from different angles and we could bring in a cooler bag with drinks and food although the food and drink prices weren't that bad. After the race everyone walks the track and while some people run to the podium the rest of the people just walk around one direction or the other for fun. I didn't mind spending the money because it was a great time and they weren't dumping out my water bottles or money gouging me at every opportunity.

@@simracing4simpletons978 nah Monaco has it’s fans. I like it. It’s an anomaly, has history and looks cool having F1 cars drive around downtown like that. Thing is that Monaco has earned that anomaly and needs to stay that way. These other street circuits to challenge it ruin it. Street circuits generally suck, and I rather have more tracks challenge Silverstone, Spa or Suzuka. I don’t see how people think that Miami is what they trying to replace Monaco with. Bernie was pretty open that he wanted Singapore to replace it. And I think Liberty want Vegas to replace it. Personally F1 as a brand needs Ferrari, Silverstone, Monza and Monaco as a constant at all cost. I get the recent sentiment behind Suzuka, Spa and Interlagos. Not sure why some new fans want to totally get rid of the History part. I’m totally down for the Netflix stuff, social media part and new places to race, that aren’t in the Middle East. I get 1 or 2 Middle East races, but 4? It’s too out of the way for most fans.

I attended the Saturday in 2022, and after having been to COTA twice, I can tell you the ONLY thing making this race less attractive is the pricing. The venue is way more prepared for mass population events (being it’s taking place on the grounds of a stadium that also hosts mass population events). The food pricing was not extraordinary (think your average stadium pricing) and I was in a grandstand going into pit entrance. Each grandstand had a fan zone that had fire rescue/paramedics, fan experiences, and water stations (which COTA never had!) all in all, it is an experience. But it is expensive. Apparently Las Vegas tickets are more. GA tickets sell out quickly as the hotels (notably the ones owned by MGM) get the dibs on tickets and put them into a package deal. I don't know what will happen but if the FiA follows the same system as FIFA you're name will be married to your ticket. You'll still be able to resell it at a cost for transferring but places like StubHub and local last minute ticket sellers along The Strip will lose out. Don't get me wrong Vegas will do well (regrettably) as it has firmly established itself as a Sports Mecca: NFL, NHL, NASCAR, F1, and soon to be MLB. Of course there are the additional events held at T-Mobile Arena (like UFC). In November NHL and NFL are going on. Couple that with F1 that weekend, well, it would be insane.

The big concern I've had, even when they first mooted the idea of a race in Miami, was the risk of the sport making the same mistakes as they did when it previously tried to expand in the US in the 1980's. With where they eventually decided to stage the race, in the car park of Hard Rock Stadium, with a track surface that breaks up more quickly than any of the late James Hunt's marriages, overly inflated prices and naff touches like the fake marina seems to reflect more on where they would have wanted to stage the race, rather than the less then glamorous location they are stuck with. What's more, turns 12 to 15 give a glimpse as to its true colours, a car park with the tight, micky mouse section that is only ever single file, making the resulting straight even harder to even think about making an overtake

As someone who is born and raised in Miami it’s great to have a race that us Floridians can go to especially now we have Logan on the grid. But it seems to be such a money grab from F1 promoters charging ridiculous prices for average seats. I know many people bought tickets thinking they could resell them because last year the tickets sold out very quickly. But that’s ruined the market for actual F1 fans it’s a normal race just as any other but just because it’s in Miami doesn’t mean it should be as expensive or more expensive then races like Monaco. It’s a soulless race but I believe could be changed by Lessening the dependence on all the extremely expensive viewing experiences.

honestly i enjoy driving most of the circuit on a sim (aside from that shit before the backstraight), but i agree with the majority that the racing around Miami last year was abysmal. and when there was action we barely saw any because the cameras were too busy panning the crowds of people in the stands

That is some crazy prices for the General Admission areas. I found that when going to the F1 races at Indy the hotels had one price for race fans and a different price for everyone else. The race fans had to pay a lot more for a room.

while the ticket prices in miami are high, it's quickly becoming the most affordable and most enjoyable race to go to in the states. ticket prices at the 2023 USGP are up nearly 50% compared to 2021, and because of COTA's location you're forced to fly into one major airport and stay in downtown austin at 3-4x hotel or airbnb rates and take a $150 shuttle that last year took 2+ hours of waiting in line just to board a bus to the track on race day. in contrast, the miami GP is situated in the middle of two major airports and several major south florida towns with plenty of accommodation, all easily accessible to the track via free shuttles that rarely have any wait times. while the on track action might not be as exciting, the overall race weekend experience in miami is certainly worth the (only slightly this year) higher price tags.

I actually went to the race last year. It was pretty cool it was super freaking hot. There was no shade. I only went for the Sunday because I wasn’t gonna spend all that money but I do have to say you don’t really get to see the track because the grandstands are everywhere so even though you just have a general admission you end up just watching it in the stadium because that’s the only place you can watch it.

i agree wholeheartedly with Lewis's remark about drivers not getting consulted but he's wrong. He's driven on a track designed by racing drivers. The current Albert Park layout was designed by Mark Scaife, multiple winner of the supercars championship. But it stands still that if supercars is smart enough to listen to drivers, why isn't F1?

I went to the race last year and it felt like a forza horizon festival so that was cool. The race itself was meh but not as bad as was portrayed on tv with the broadcasters missing out on a handful of midfield battles. As for transportation and hotels I had no problems surprisingly, I was staying in an airbnb about 25 mins north of Miami and just took a bus right into the venue. I think they have lots to improve on but definitely not as bad as people make it out to be. Oh and they need to get rid of the yachts

Living in FL and loving F1 had me really wanting to go to the Miami race but those tickets prices are so unreasonable. Instead my gf and I went on a 10 day cruise and watched it on TV while on the cruise. I think I won in this situation. Live events are cool and all but watching the F1 race on a luxurious cruise... Hard to beat and 💯 Recommend.

I called the issues with the Miami GP when I heard the ticket prices... I just didn't expect them this soon. Miami is far away for the majority of Americans so it's expensive to travel and the tickets are expensive. It makes the Austin GP look cheap. In a recession can the Miami GP really afford itself to rely on only rich Americans to support it. I can get a ticket for every race in the IndyCar season for the price of a cheap grandstand Miami GP ticket.

My two cousins went last year and are avid motorsports fans. NASCAR, Indycar, IMSA, you name it, they've been to many races for each. From a racing standpoint, they said it was lackluster but as for the experience, they said it was something they had never experienced. Called it "a massive party with a giant racetrack attached to it." Seems like it would be fun to go to once, but from a racing standpoint, I'd much rather go to other tracks. Hopefully, this year will be much better for racing.
