I too don’t agree that 8 years was enough for Murder. He should have been given life in prison and not been allowed to have lived a life that his wife and daughter missed out on.

Very interesting once again, thanks Chris and Vicky just very sad😢. Such a cowardly attitude to take his wife's life and his little daughter's life. I feel he should have got more years in prison, because he deprived his little daughter from living her life in full and of course his wife's life. Thanks for sharing 👍👍

His trial took place the day before my Mother was born! Its amazing he got so much consideration from the Judge in regards waiting for another mental assessment- yet others in previous tales were executed on flimsy evidence to be honest- another good one folks 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

It's a difficult one to decide.The Dr.'s who stated in his defence that he was insane at time of the murders altered the course of events. Although James was willing to take his punishment, it is possible that the authorities felt that if to go ahead with the death penalty they would be granting him what he wanted all the time. Instead by commuting the sentence to imprisonment that would deny James his wish. Although the consensus is that he should have served longer we don't have the reason why he was released after only 8 years. There is no justice for Florence and Mary, not even a headstone.
@DaysofHorror
@DaysofHorror Жыл бұрын
It would make sense they reduced his punishment from hanging to life imprisonment as, as you say, he wanted to end his life anyway so would have got what he ultimately wanted. As for the headstone, I personally think there was one but over the years it many have become unstable and since been removed. Just a shame nothing at all can be found though 🫤

I agree with Vicky, if they didn’t end his life he should have at least spent the rest of his life incarcerated, because his wife and daughter weren’t given a choice or a chance to have a future like he had. Good story by the way guys.

Great video again. Lots of food for thought. The 8 years 'life sentence' is definitely appaling.
@DaysofHorror
@DaysofHorror Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I struggle with that. One minute it's the sentence of death and then a reprieve is given, life sentence only to spend 8 years?

I agree 8 years was not long enough for two lives , I do believe at the time he was suffering from mental health , although he knew what he was doing was wrong he shown us this from the words he wrote. Thank you both for making and sharing such an interesting and informative video

We were contacted by a relative of the people involved in the story, asking if we could look into it and hopefully locate their grave. We tried our best, but unfortunately the grave no longer has a headstone 😞 An interesting story that has everything. Sad that people lost their lives, questions on whether or not he should have been released. There's a netflix documentary right there in this story!

I kinda don't understand how if his life and how this world was so cruel, so miserable to him,why didn't he try suicide again in prison or afterwards? Unless with time,he matured mind wise or put on medication idk.. maybe truthfully his first wife was too demanding on certain things or the way they were living was by herself choosing not to move or do anything differently he had wanted and it was unbearable for him to just leave her, especially his child behind.. so many thoughts on this but very sad that he decided for her and the child based only on his feelings that life wasn't worth living for.. thanks for sharing

In my state he could still b blue juiced for it. When it’s more than 1 person and one is a child, it’s mitigating circumstances and you just need 1, not 2 to DP qualify

100% agree with you. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy he found happiness but it still doesnt take away the fact that a little girl and his wife never got that chance and a sentence of death rescinded to life imprisonment to spending just 8 years seems a little odd.

I understand that it seems very cruel for the daughter and mother to lose their lives and for the perpetrator to get off but I do wonder whether he was actually suffered from depression at all. Usually a person who is seriously depressed does not recover and go on to live another life and even emigrate to Canada and then the United States. If they are seriously mentally ill it is something that either required medication to keep the patient on an even keel because it returns periodically and in James case he seems to have recovered totally. I am so sorry for the family of his wife and daughter because they have been robbed of so much. How on earth could he go on to live another life without the memories of his wife and child. I talked with my husband who has been a sufferer of depression himself and takes medication and has for years. He agrees with me that how could he marry again TWICE!! and live happily ever after. Having said all of that I know he would have to meet his maker eventually and unless he has seriously repented of what he did he would face the penalty in the life to come. Thank you for another very interesting podcast that gets the grey cells working.

Suicide is a totally selfish thing. But there is one thing which I fully believe and will stand by. I had 5 brothers and even though 1 has passed away before I had my own son I had had time to reflect on the levels of maturity between a man and woman. On observation I have noted that a man is only ready to settle down and marry at the age of 30. Women must marry early because their body clock is set for the purpose of bearing children safely between the ages of 18 to 25. After that time their metabolism slows down and they do not have the same strength to carry and deliver a child. This man was too young to be able to handle the responsibilities associated with being a full time father and earning enough to provide for his family. He was immature and had had to marry because of the child which was already 4 months on it's way. He was probably hoping to get the death penalty so that his immature selfish wish could be realized. It is very hard for me to decide whether her should have served a longer period. To be fair maybe he should have. I hope he treated his further 2 wives well.

8 years doesn't sit well with me either, he should have got life. He deprived his wife and daughter of a loving life together so for him to go on and enjoy a good life is disgusting. I certainly don't believe he was insane and 8 years later he's sane. I wonder did he have any children with his second wife in my personal opinion he didnt and planned everything down to the dairy in the other room.

8 years. Is this what they thought the wife and daughter were worth. if he didn't want to be married anymore. Just leave them, but to kill them and then to get 8years, why. As we all know he will be out before he serves the 8 years Is up he will be free. I have just saw you tell your story, you are very professional in the way you tell a story. I agree he should have at least done life or close for it. I don't know how he could go on with his life and enjoy anything knowing what he had done. I do agree that if they had known about mental health and could have gotten help that a lot of these types of crimes probably wouldn't have happened. Thank you!

Hi,I’ll start by saying me and the other half love watching your channel(we come from blackburn)….when James tried taking his own life,if he was so remorseful why did he not try and take his life again in prison,or on his release?I think the decision not to hang him was the right one(as at the time that’s what he wanted,easy way out).If he really did want all three of them together away from such a cruel world,he would of managed it……if his sentence had been life,I do believe he would of attempted suicide again🥴

Thanks for the kind words and for leaving a comment on this tragic story. Looking back at the tales we have covered, it does seem a very strange and hard to understand world our ancestors lived in. We have covered stories of husbands murdering their wives and then taking their own lives, only to be buried together. That's just one aspect of life we struggle to understand. But there are other stories, such as this one, that also, in some respects, just dont make any sense.

8 years in 1912? Not life. Not scaffold. I mean……holy cow! The gravestone might be gone because maybe people chipped pieces of it way. Famous or infamous cases here, they chip away pieces of the stones and they have to remove them. Billy the Kid’s headstone had that happen more than once. It’s not just national figures but local ones too. Just an idea. Then again maybe that’s just a stupid American thing. Idk
