So my Ford Escape gets about 28 or so Hwy MPG and I'm figuring on the low end I'd probably get around half that with a scamp 16 trailer. I may have missed it, but with your MPG estimates, is that with the same vehicle for all of these? I know my girlfriend has a pretty fuel efficient vehicle so she'd probably be able to get upwards of 40 - big difference for me being around 15 or so with the trailer. This cost gap grows with the distance of the trip, of course, and I know if i was only 75 miles away, I probably wouldn't be staying in a hotel, so I'm not sure this is realistic. But I understand you are trying to compare apples to oranges as best you can and camping an hour away is reasonable.

Thanks for the info. Used to work in your area for the water/sewer. I hope you're getting out! I still haven't left the driveway, LOL.

Sounds like you have chosen the best and most-efficient way (especially financially) to travel! All that you said makes great sense for your needs, even your wants. ;-) If I end up getting a Class B (~$80-100K new), that sure would buy a whole lot of hotel rooms AND gas/food while traveling! So financially, I realize getting an RV wouldn't make "good financial sense" AT ALL in my case...IF it were not ALSO to be used as my Daily Driver. Since I DO need a car to get around, I look at the B as "just an expensive car" (kind of like buying a G-Class Mercedes perhaps, Land Rover, huge 4x4 1-ton truck, whatever -- I DO want a 4x4/AWD vehicle). So being able to use it locally (as we all do with our Daily Drivers anyway) AND for long road-trips/camping -- doing double-duty -- that justifies it for me psychologically, even if not that much financially. Even if I went with Plan B (a small TT, either a T@B 320 Boondock Edge or an Airstream Basecamp X @ ~$30k-40K respectively), THAT would pay for a whole lot of hotel rooms. A way cheaper TT would take less time to "pay for itself" so how much one's RV cost originally makes a big difference, of course. Still, I don't think I'd EVER travel enough to use so many hotel rooms, gas fill-ups and food while traveling that $30-40K would get me...so what's another $60K for a Class B (well, that kind of thinking -- terribly flawed as it is -- helps rationalize buying an expensive RV...sometimes ANY RV). As for hotel rooms, "bringing you own room" means no worries about bedbugs, noisy next-room neighbors slamming doors/hitting walls/loud TVs, kids (or "adults") running in the halls, not to mention spending so much money just to have (mainly a place to sleep for the night), THAT seems like money poorly spent. It must be nice to be able to stay at a place -- one night or multiple as many people do when staying in a particular place for a while -- for several hundred dollars/night, but to me that's wasted money, even if you DO have it to spend. ;-) Happy Travels, -- BR

What people spend for a short camping getaway astounds me. I love my Boler very much and since it's ours, camping is relatively cheap. But we rent out our Boler. A couple is picking it up today and taking it for 12 days. The rental fee for that is $900. In addition to that they'll have to pay for park fees, campsite rental, fuel and food. I'd never pay that much to camp. But....... I benefit from it, so I'm happy as long as people are.

Canadian Egg-Scursions what website do you use to rent out your camper? How does insurance work? We have a Scamp and might be interested in doing this too!

It depends on where you live and how your insurance companies work. I charge $75 per night and list it on Kijiji. I've thought of expanding to FB marketplace but I'm already overwhelmed with renters on waiting lists and its booked thru to the 3rd week in August. It just left today for 13 days. We just have regular trailer insurance on it. We asked when we insured it and here it's no change in reg insurance. But we always double check that the renter has full insurance, because if they don't, the Boler will be impounded with their vehicle. Also, we charge a $300 damage deposit so if anything happens our deductible is paid for by them.

Eliza it can be risky, as you have to hope strangers will treat it as you would. But given the money they pay for it, I like to think they rent it for the love of the Boler so are kind to it. We've been renting it out for 3 yrs without issue. And we've had 4 renters go on to buy their own Boler or Scamp immediately after.

Our longer trips can cost more and we do stay "free" many places too but camping can get spendy if you're not careful. I agree though if people are willing to pay it let that drive the market. What do you usually spend on a weekend away, if you don't mind me asking?

Our ScampLife Well, you guys keep your cost pretty low. I was referring to people who rent as opposed to ownership. Like my renters easily spend between $225-$900 just on rent. Couple that with average camp costs and you could easily book a 5 day cruise lol.

Do those rooms cost more because of the kitchen? Ones we've looked into are around $200+ a night.
