It dawned on me that the reason why the moon would wish to use terror is because fear is the only thing that keeps you awake. Real Sleep is the implementation of the idea that sleep is useless so that way you always have the likelihood of seeing the moon. Such as the disassociation experiment, an experiment to keep you from sleeping due to the fear one has from nightmares. The moon is only visible when the Earth has made its daily rotation into night, it would be easy to combat such a creature since you just have to avoid it by sleeping in the dark. The moon therefore would try to make people not sleep as much as possible and as such, create a more subservient or broken people. It obviously works, cause now I don’t know if I can sleep. @@theannoyedlink5153 oh man Bloodborne is one of my favorite games of all time, hadn’t even considered comparing it to this though until you brought it up, great point. In our normal lives the moon is, despite the changing phases, relatively constant, always up in the sky at night for us to see- and when something constant like that is shifted, when it breaks with its constancy and becomes even slightly different, it is ever so creepy. Even something as simple as shifting the moon from being behind clouds (or a tree) to in front of them breaks our comprehension, it is entirely unnatural and unsettling just by making it closer in the sky because it ceases to exist as we have known it to and now is just different enough to be worrying in a way you can’t quite place.

@darylwilson9124 2 жыл бұрын
Both halves of the statement prove to be just that. Statements. No opinions, no exaggeration just the first half implying the existence of something (the 51st state) followed by the second half of the sentence letting us know that no such place exists (is not a place) The uneasyness could be from intentional cognitive dissonance. It could come from 50 not being a small number. One by one we got to 50 over time, could there be one more in the future? Could the existence of that one more state lead to a lack of species capable to survive the impact of actions that take place because that one more state exists? America is a large world power that tetters to and frow but I think if the leader of america (I don't wanna say names or titles) lost their shit some serious worldwide damage could be the outcome. American election time heightens emotion like no other. It's not arrogance based on the military, the world watches because of what we're capable of. A 51st state would shift political power 24 hous after it was borne if not in faster. Political upheaval leads to violence and war but wars you can't control aren't as profitable. Image the military the world is afraid of being used on the people if that nation. The 51st state could absolutely be a place in some other time. I think some of the unease comes from the possibility that the 51st state DOES exist, factual, and the implications is we, a non extinct society can stop this state from existing or it will do the same to all of man kind. The 51st state is not a place. At least if we're lucky, it won't be.

It’s horrifying because it can be true. Cosmic horror hits on a very deep level to humans. We evolved to think we’re the center of the universe, apex predators have to see it that way. This is the antithesis to millions of years of evolution, it’s why we believed in a geocentric model of the solar system for so long. I studied astronomy in college, I worked under a co-writer for the Nobel prize in physics in my undergrad years. I spent many nights in the university observatory right outside the city checking to make sure the automated picture taking was going right. He used to talk about the universe having life that we would never be able to see because we don’t know how to look for it. Organisms on the scale of galaxies, what is a human to bacteria? A being at that scale doesn’t make sense to our monkey brains. It never had to be considered, our ancestors biggest fear were dinosaurs while we were scurrying through the trees and digging into holes. Perhaps we’re surrounded by this type of life, but we don’t know how to look for it. Our five senses are so limiting, yet we do nearly all of our science using them, look at how far we’ve gotten using something like electromagnetism, something humans don’t have a sense for. To imagine a creature so out of our realm of evolutionary experience could learn to talk to our five senses is horrifying.

Here's a weird theory about something you might not have known: Before Local 58, years ago, Kris Straub had a webcomic called Broodhollow (which, btw, was some FANTASTIC psychological/cosmic horror). The main character would sometimes be seen reading a newspaper comic called Cadavre, featuring the exact little skeleton man seen in Show for Children. He's a moody French existentialist whose antics sometimes parallel problems the main character is dealing with at the time. After a bit Cadavre starts showing up in the main character's dreams and speaking directly to him, which can be a cue to the reader that the scene is a dream. Cadavre is a very lovable little bone man (with a bunch of cute comics published if you're interested) but what's important is that he's primarily a cute, commercially digestible version of something subconsciously happening within the disturbing story of Broodhollow. His appearance as a children's cartoon in Local 58 could suggest one of a few things: 1. What is happening to Cadavre is meant as a parallel to what the people of Earth in Local 58 are going through, or will go through: trotting along happily while the Moon watches, coming across increasingly disturbing things until he eventually gets too scared, admits defeat, lies down and waits for death. 2. The Cadavre story we see is a projection of a dream or a nightmare, or something intended to influence the dreams of watchers, similar to True Sleep. 3. Maybe both: Cadvre's cartoon is the kid-friendly, commercially viable version of True Sleep, shown to acclimate kids with what's going to happen to them, including the turning fear into a casual, imitatable thing the friendly skeleton man is doing.

So, I tried the Real Sleep thing where I watched the video every night before I went to sleep for one week. In that week, I dreamt 2 out of 7 nights. Another week after the experiment, I had no dreams. But for 4-5 weeks afterward, I experienced some of the most vivid and terrible nightmares I have ever had. I can't say that these were caused by watching the Real Sleep program, but it sure was interesting, at least in hindsight. I'm wondering if I should do it again to confirm if it was truly the cause of my nightmares. Edit: Thank you, everyone, for your thoughts, insights, and concerns. I am in a much better place mentally now, so I do not see a need to repeat this experiment. The main reason, I think, for my nightmares, was the mental illness that I'd been struggling with for a long time at that point. i.e anxiety, depression, and such. Replicate this with caution.

Bro I remember watching Real Sleep for the first time… this was during a time where every night I had very misplaced, WEIRD, vivid drama that didn’t make sense when I woke up and tried to remember them and think what it meant. Just random shit that was confusing. But then I came across Local 58, watched their videos and saw the Real Sleep one. I was creeped out and brushed it off. But later that night… I didn’t dream at all….. I think it’s real what you tried. But than again I only recall one night. But all those last months I always dreamed or saw something in my sleep dream wise. But after staring at the real sleep clip and seeing the weird distorted faces, I didn’t dream the following night. You not having dreams is just a coincidence, there is a cycle during your sleep, and one of the parts of the cycle is called REM (rapid eye movement), this is when your dreams occur, you have multipld rem cycles during the night, ussualy 2 or 3, but it's common for people to forget their dreams, especially the ones during the firsts REM cycles. The nightmare part can be related to the real sleep video, those texts at the end are there to make your mind believe in them by reading it, it's pretty much a hypnosis to affect your dreams

Local 58 is great, but if there's one thing i absolutely despise, it's real sleep. The idea of becoming unable to properly recognize or identify faces or facial features puts me into a existential panic. What if one day i just wake up, and talk to my mother, only for me to stop recognizing her has my mother, another human, but rather a faceless being to disassociate from. Can't stand thinking about that.
@WaiW41
@WaiW41 Жыл бұрын
I apologise if I end up worsening your fear, but this is a very real condition known as prosopagnosia or face blindness. It is thought to occur due to dysfunction or damage in the right fusiform gyrus (of the brain). Essentially the mechanism under face recognition, which is unique and differs from other object recognition, is disrupted. While we usually analyse various elements and their context to recognise objects, facial recognition almost is completely top-down or context-driven. What this means is that we do no individually register elements of someone's face such as their nose or eyes, we perceive as a whole face. In prosopagnosia, this top-down facial recognition process stops working, so people are able to view the individual elements of someone's face but cannot integrate it into a recognisable face. Usually, most people with prosopagnosia are able to live with the condition by using other cues (such as voice, clothing, etc) and the context to recognise other people, but I imagine if someone suddenly had a stroke or brain injury that lesioned their right fusiform gyrus, the initial period of the disability would be terrifying.
@akaehm
@akaehm Жыл бұрын
I actually suffer from Capgras-Delusion, after heatstroke inflicted a brain injury. It's the opposite of prosopagnosia, where you recognise the faces of your loved ones, but have no pathway of emotional connection anymore. Leaving your brain with the only coping mechanism of thought 'This is not my mother.', for example. A clone, a monster, a shape shifter, an agent, a twin, a fraud, a demon, nother dimension- you name it. It is quite terrifying. Even more so, when you are just a child.

Man this really messed with me. I was playing Stardew Valley while watching. If you've never played it, it's kind of a life simulator where you work as a farmer and can get married or whatever. I'm married to some NPC in the game, and every day at 10PM in game, she would, like clockwork, go to bed. When 10PM hit in the game as I was watching this, hearing about not going outside and looking at the moon and shit, I saw her start to walk away from where she was standing, presumably to go to bed. I went outside to check one more thing before joining her, but when I came back inside, she wasn't in bed. Over 100 in game days of her being in bed after 10PM without fail, and this one time she was just gone. I looked around but couldn't find her anywhere, and in the relationship menu where it shows your relationship with all the NPCs, hers was bugged out. The next day everything went back to normal, she was there like nothing happened. I went to sleep (in real life) thinking about one of the concepts from your conspiracy theory videos, the one by Carl Jung about there being no coincidences, and I dunno, first time I've felt properly freaked out since I moved out of my parent's house. Thanks for mentioning Jung and synchronicities. I wish the *original* site for the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research lab was online and intact, you might be able to find it through the Wayback Machine. It was focusing on the interaction between consciousness and mechanical processes, the exchange of information absent standard pathways of communication (like remote viewing), and so on. * Human machine interaction where a random process was paired with a human operator, like a marble cascade similar to Plinko on the Price Is Right, finding that even without touching the machine the act of focusing on the machine was having a "statistically significant" impact. Different operators were able to achieve greater control (as in influencing the process towards one side or the other, or increasing coherence and decreasing scatter.) * The interaction of groups on random processes like a white noise generator, cooperation having an impact on the coherence of the generator, conflict having another. The strongest impact was when people were engaging the creative faculty and exhibiting Openness on the Big Five. * The impact of groups increased exponentially with the increase in the number of participants, the degree of interconnection. * The human machine interaction effects were not just on the micro or quantum level but on the standard physical as well. A computer can't generate randomness, it can approximate it, but it does so through very specific processes. You were cultivating a very specific holistic mindset by watching Wendigoon videos, you're fostering interconnection within the brain drawing on memory, imagination, language processing, problemsolving, yadda yadda. (Some psychedelics like psilocybin evoke the cognitive experience not by increasing activity, but by decreasing the inhibitory centers and systems of the brain. Unchecked crosstalk and simultaneous activation of the entire brain isn't genius, after all, it's a seizure. But *slightly* decreasing those often overactive inhibitory centers can lead to inspiration and a marked increase in the Openness trait even after a single dose, making it of interest in the treatment of depression.) The specific mindset could have had your brain acting as its own little field generator or modulator, or acting in such a way that the inputs you gave the system from which its PRNG work was done resulted in that abnormal synchronicity. Mantras and repetition often form a key component of esoteric/mystic practice, from focusing on the breath to a phrase to a repeated action like a rosary. It's like occupying one level of the mind with a task lets you get it out of the way to allow for that crossconnection and alternate mode activity. You were primed for it by playing a game in a habitual way, but specifically a game about manifesting order and cultivating connection through repeated tasks, and then engaging your creativity and visualization on the deep dive that Wendigoon gives us. I think it all came together to make for an interesting experience that could add some weight to your reading and Jung's ideas? Whatever the case, thank you for sharing! [Insert standard disclaimer, YMMV, void where prohibited, it's just like, my opinion, man, and there's cool shit to research on your own if you want.]

Something that struck me about the creature in the grave is that it's curled up, eerily reminiscent of a fetus - I think this works well with the idea of the moon being an egg, and the creature in the grave being the likeness of the thing in the moon. My rough theory is that the years of beaming waves into space and whatever they did in those 11 minutes on the moon must of caused the egg to hatch. In the video 'a look back' multiple different openings for local58 are shown, and a comment theorised that they were different openings for each decade from the 50s-2000s. I like to believe that local 58 was either highjacked/created by the moon to try and take control of peoples minds. I like to think the episodes are not published in order but something more like this 1)Show for children is an old black and white cartoon, and the moons first attempt to gain influence in around the 50s. The moon has just started to hatch and is weak, so goes for children - usually more manipulatable then adults 2) contingency is the moon trying to tap into the paranoia of the late 60s/70s, where the fear of nuclear war and the belief in American patriotism was still strong 3) real sleep comes from the 80/90s 4) You are on the quickest route is more modern (due to gps) and the moon is now much more powerful - able to effect a single persons mind/gps 5) skywatching and weather service are the most recent, as the moon is strong enough to completely break out of the egg and weather service is a desperate attempt to save people. (these are just rough estimates, if anyone can make these dates more accurate or suggest a better order I would appreciate it) It makes sense to me that a horrific creature that has lived for millennia takes half a century to hatch out of its egg, and will be kinda mad at the primitive apes for shooting radio waves at it

This make even more sense if you've seen a bird egg under a microscope. the veins and craters thing on it look eerily similar to real life fertilized eggs. not only that but is not rare to hear birds chirping before they hatch and another fun fact, some birds sing to their eggs before they hatch, so those 'screams' being from the moon-egg or its parent it's possible

@@AWWYEAHHHHHH Yeah. Same thing happens if you mess with the sliders in an MMO for too long. It's why towards the end they used deliberately scrambled features where they don't fit and they're flipped or rotated. You start parsing them not as a whole, but as individual parts, which bypasses a bunch of visual and sociological shortcuts in your brain for identifying people. Really messes with your ability to empathize, especially if they aren't animate like a person's. It's functionally similar to the tendency of words to sound meaningless if you keep repeating them over and over. If you disassociated a behavior with it's accustomed meaning, especially one that has become mostly automatic like parsing speech or looking at a person's face to get a read on them, and draw attention to it while giving faulty information, you start re-assessing what the meaning of your actions is. And not being used to that, it starts disorienting you until you get your bearings again. Honestly it's nothing to worry about, pareidolia related to human faces will kick in again for most people pretty quick. Well, unless you're doing it repeatedly before going unconscious as part of a health regimen-turned brainwashing tool like this seemed to be styled as. Long term conditioning can nearly always cause damage, though whether it would persistently create the results of the short term-viewing or entirely other effects is hard to tell.

A few things jumped out at me. First, the full moon recorded for November 1970 was November 13th. The "DO NOT USE AFTER" date on the title card is also November 13th, 1970. Second, I realized that the "Cadavre" cartoon was to show that the moon feeds on the dead as well as the living, hence why the character is literally a cadaver and why there are dug up graves. This cleared up the part in "Contingency" when they referenced law enforcement making citizens comply. The law enforcement isn't there to just kill you and then kill themselves: it's so they can drag out all the corpses in the local area for the moon to consume. The "victory position" is just there to make their jobs easier, hence why it states you to take the position "if there is time".

Straub's brand of horror is truly special. It's all location specific (Local58 and the Candle Cove/Ichor Falls universe all take place in West Virginia) and all predicated on defamilarization. I think there's definitely deliberate imagery in eyes here too. In the close-up of the moon in the final video, where you can see those tendril-looking things and dust moving into a moon's crater, that has always looked like an eye to me. A close up of the iris (tendrils over the white surface) and the pupil (the darkness of the crater). Also in weather service, text describes the moon as an eye, and also the warnings are to not look at the moon, and sight is a function of eyes. I don't know how to interpret it, but I think that eyes and vision defintely play into the imagery and meaning of this.

"You Are On The Fastest Available Route" is effective because it utilisizes so many common horror tropes yet has an outwardly simple story. Typical tropes used in it include the dark and stormy night, fear of getting lost, being alone (or at least I suppose the driver is being alone in the car), a dark forest, and familiar technology getting hijacked. The story seems simple enough, a driver being lured into some lonely spot over a three hours' drive away, yet with all the other videos on the channel, it's very likely there's a more complex story behind the nightly trip and attack.

SCP-001 (One of them at least) is really similar to this, basically the moon just kinda melts you but won't let you die, it keeps you sentient

You're the real deal dude watching stuff that gave you nightmares all in the purpose of educating your audience and expressing your views on the topic and starting a discussion I feel these topics are very important and necessary because as each day goes things keep getting stranger

The only thing that I’ve watched that gave me horrible nightmares was when I watched a video that my friend took of me when I got married she turned out to be a real horror

Last night I was up for 24 hours, I watched this video for the first time. I was hopped up on caffeine and was dying to go to sleep. But after watching this video I felt dread for the first time since I was a child. I followed the instructions of the real sleep video cus I thought it was a joke. I was afraid to close my eyes cus I could see the non-specific faces staring at me. I drank myself to sleep watching Netflix. 10/10 great video!

weird thing that happened to me was how like over a decade ago, when Candle Cove was just an internet thing, i tracked Kris down with an email to tell him about how someone in an online community i was in was taking credit for the story. IMAGINE MY SHOCK when he showed up on the board and chastised the little asshole. good for him

This is a good video that explains local 58. I am a 42 year old woman( Im lucky to remember when analog and VHS video aesthetic was real and actual, I long for those old times again. I was a kid,but remember it vividly)and know absolutely nothing about ARGs, but I do love some good,convincing analog horror aesthetic. I like local 58 and especially Contingency, but I never connected all of the videos together with the moon and alien motif.. Nice informative video.

Tbh the moment you started explaining what it might be I just stoped feeling scared. It reminded me that it’s just fiction with an author and a plot.

Contingency is what sold me on Local 58 originally. I saw "you are on the fastest available route" and was interested in it. But I saw contingency and was hooked, like "oh yeah this is gonna be a great horror thing."
