I averaged 20mpg and I did far less highway driving. Why? Driving style. I had a 96 Buick Century (4-door, 3.8l) that I once managed to get 36mpg average on one tank of gas, well above its EPA rating. Driving style.
@MowerModdin4 жыл бұрын
It also helps with driving distance...shorter distance driving will net you less fuel economy because most cars run rich until they're up to operating temperature. +KingSnowman This test is horribly flawed. If anyone here has driven a Prius (I own one), the value in them is in saving money during stops and slower driving when the electric engine is operating and the gas engine cuts off. By keeping the car "as fast as possible" (actual words of the test subject), the prius can NEVER use its electric engine and thus is relying on pure gasoline. In reality, there are stop lights, stop signs, turns that requires braking to around 10 mph tops, and other road situations besides maximum speed on a track. Also as Anna pointed out, the Prius is operating at maximum output. That is significantly less efficient and very illegal in almost all parts of the planet. Here in Illinois where I'm a traffic attorney, driving 90 or more can carry jail sentences and criminal charges. There is little reason to go the maximum speed. Therefore, if we were to do a real world test, it would be on actual roads at posted speed limits or just above them.

@jasonwilkins15098 жыл бұрын
Fr0nts4u that however is like trying to determine if an elephant or a monkey is a better animal by seeing which one can climb a tree better. The test is hardly a reflection of real-world driving as it is legal only in the smallest minority of roadways. If we wanted to compare the two for mileage, you drive at or above the speed limit but not so fast that you get pulled over by a cop every 5 minutes. You drive in locations where you have to occasionally makes stops like you do in the real world. That's real world driving and quite frankly the only type of driving people are really interested in when it comes to saving on gas. Whoopty fucking Doo! I can get better mileage in an M3 if I drive double the legal limit in almost every part of the Chicagoland area and never come to a stop. That will be handy when I am representing my clients in traffic court when the same judges see me blatantly violated the law. This video offers no practical information whatsoever about the driving performance of these two vehicles for people who drive on public roads outside of unique outliers like the Autobahn. I guess I could take as a consolation prize that I get better mileage in an M3 at the cost of speeding so fast that it is punishable by up to a year in jail

They’re simply different operating engines that naturally burn oil, and most owners were incapable of maintaining them properly, leading to them breaking down. @raminasr29287 жыл бұрын
Nope. In terms of lifetime cost (price to buy, fuel costs, maintenance costs) and environmental impact (when you add manufacturing impact plus lifetime carbon emissions and final scrapping impact), its a win win compared to most (95%+) cars in its class (which would be 'economy sedans' in the US). In other words, its a very practical and logical car that *happens* to be good for the environment compared to 95% of other cars on the road. Yes, I acknowledge that its less fun to drive than many cars (same with many other cars), and the aesthetics don't appeal to everyone (same with many other cars). Yes, riding mass transit or a bike or walking make a much bigger (or should I say smaller) impact, but lets compare apples to apples. Or would you prefer official cars of "I want to hurt the world as much as I can while keeping my luxuries"?

To say this is misleading is a massive understatement. If you drive a Prius the way it was designed to be driven you will see near 45 MPG. Not 17 MPG. I doubt the Prius in this test ever got the opportunity to coast and go into EV mode. That's where the efficiency of a Prius comes from. Jeremy mentioned the subject of changing your driving habits. That is certainly important. After a few months of driving a Prius and paying attention to the data read outs you become a more efficient driver. A more efficient driver in a Prius is a more efficient operation when compared to pretty much any other car.

Please if I'm wrong someone correct me. This isn't a fair test because of a simple reason. The prius is being pushed to its limits and using its maximum amount of power. While the BMW is using probably around 20% of the power its capable of producing. These cars have engines that are tuned for completely different purposes. The BMW has high speed and handling capabilities. While the Prius is a car of "efficiency". So the Prius is designed to be driven in a slow and calm way like a normal human being not like a savage. In conclusion the Prius is being used for something that it wasn't designed to do. I don't know if this phrase is correct, but once I heard someone say " A big engine doing little work is more efficient than a small engine doing a lot of work". That's why the M3 is getting good mpg because its doing very little work. If the M3 was at its limits like the Prius was I don't think it would get a very good mpg. I generally love cars and consider myself a young car enthusiast, but I don't know why a lot of car enthusiasts like to defame the Prius. It is a great car for the job it was designed to do, and well the M3 is also great but it is a car for a whole different purpose.

@@M67v slipstreaming needs a shorter distance to actually be affected. If anything, at that distance, the air wake would make it less economical. Also they weren't taking exactly the same lines. A diesel BMW 3 series has a wltp combined mpg of 54-60mpg but can get around 45mpg on winding country roads whereas the Prius only got 35mpg at most on the same roads. Diesel cars also produce less CO2 emissions nowadays. When it comes to fuel economy (when it's the Prius against almost any other saloon car) it really does come down to how you drive the car. I'm not saying the Prius can't do 60-70 mpg but most people won't get that

Jason, most people aren't aware (though the folks at TopGear should be) that the Prius has an Atkinson Cycle internal combustion engine. This engine has exceptional mileage at highway speeds, but doesn't do so well at low speeds. That's why most manufacturers don't use them. But the Prius can use them because at low speed the electric motors compensate. Also on the highway, when going down hills, the engine can turn off. The best MPG I got on a tank of gas was 64 MPG, and that was because it was mostly highway mileage, and I used the pulse and glide technique to maximize my MPG.

Prius owner in the USA: still get better MPGs on freeways than petrol-only cars.
@malmckee93588 жыл бұрын
Just looked up the spec for a Jetta TDI and a 2013 Prius (my car's year). 46mpgs for the Jetta and 48 for the Prius on highways. Personally, I regularly get over 60mpgs, even on mixed trips that last over one hour in the USA. And I don't drive slowly. I take your point though, that on freeways some petrol-only cars will get better mpgs. My statement was a little sweeping! I'm not an environmentalist, by the way. I'm just an average guy. Making batteries is costly to the environment, obviously. Making batteries has ALWAYS been costly to the environment. But we've been making batteries for at least 200 years, and we're going to continue for a while yet. We;ve been producing internal combustion engines for transport for about 150 years, and the increased reliance on the fact that they constantly emit carbon-based pollutants has necessitated research into more energy-efficient engines. Mass production of cars will continue - whether they use batteries or not. But the amount of hourly carbon production from the usage of vehicles can be reduced, while the amount of pollutants produced from battery production may (or may not - I'm still dubious) increase at the production stage. I have no doubt that the carbon production from daily usage of cars is currently much much greater than the carbon production from manufacturing batteries. Batteries can also be re-used and recycled. It's not perfect yet, but we're still relatively new at it. The top speed of an roadworthy automobile back in the 1920s was what, about 12mph? The top speed of one of the first hybrids was about 20mph in roughly the same period (although the first car to break the 100kph barrier was electric, in 1899). People were undoubtedly against the catalytic convertor when it was first introduced in the 1970s. However, there is no need to jump on the anti-environmentalist bandwagon.
