Over the years, many fans have asked questions like: Why doesn't Batman put down his enemies? Why doesn't he use firearms? Why does he work beside heroes who do? This video exists to answer those questions, using the main comic book version of Batman; the one from which all others stem from.
Batman is a superhero appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by artist Bob Kane and writer Bill Finger, and debuted in the 27th issue of the comic book Detective Comics on March 30, 1939. In the DC Universe continuity, Batman is the alias of Bruce Wayne, a wealthy American playboy, philanthropist, and industrialist who resides in Gotham City. Batman's origin story features him swearing vengeance against criminals after witnessing the murder of his parents Thomas and Martha as a child, a vendetta tempered with the ideal of justice. He trains himself physically and intellectually, crafts a bat-inspired persona, and monitors the Gotham streets at night. Kane, Finger, and other creators accompanied Batman with supporting characters, including his sidekicks Robin and Batgirl; allies Alfred Pennyworth, James Gordon, and Catwoman; and foes such as the Penguin, the Riddler, Two-Face, and his archenemy, the Joker.Kane conceived Batman in early 1939 to capitalize on the popularity of DC's Superman; although Kane frequently claimed sole creation credit, Finger substantially developed the concept from a generic superhero into something more bat-like. The character received his own spin-off publication, Batman, in 1940. Batman was originally introduced as a ruthless vigilante who frequently killed or maimed criminals, but evolved into a character with a stringent moral code and strong sense of justice. Unlike most superheroes, Batman does not possess any superpowers, instead relying on his intellect, fighting skills, and wealth. The 1960s Batman television series used a camp aesthetic, which continued to be associated with the character for years after the show ended. Various creators worked to return the character to his darker roots in the 1970s and 1980s, culminating with the 1986 miniseries The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller.DC has featured Batman in many comic books, including comics published under its imprints such as Vertigo and Black Label. The longest-running Batman comic, Detective Comics, is the longest-running comic book in the United States. Batman is frequently depicted alongside other DC superheroes, such as Superman and Wonder Woman, as a member of organizations such as the Justice League and the Outsiders. In addition to Bruce Wayne, other characters have taken on the Batman persona on different occasions, such as Jean-Paul Valley / Azrael in the 1993-1994 "Knightfall" story arc; Dick Grayson, the first Robin, from 2009 to 2011; and Jace Fox, son of Wayne's ally Lucius, as of 2021. DC has also published comics featuring alternate versions of Batman, including the incarnation seen in The Dark Knight Returns and its successors, the incarnation from the Flashpoint (2011) event, and numerous interpretations from Elseworlds stories.One of the most iconic characters in popular culture, Batman has been listed among the greatest comic book superheroes and fictional characters ever created. He is one of the most commercially successful superheroes, and his likeness has been licensed and featured in various media and merchandise sold around the world; this includes toy lines such as Lego Batman and video games like the Batman: Arkham series. Batman has been adapted in live-action and animated incarnations, including the 1960s Batman television series played by Adam West and in film by Michael Keaton in Batman (1989), Batman Returns (1992), and The Flash (2023), Val Kilmer in Batman Forever (1995), George Clooney in Batman & Robin (1997), Christian Bale in The Dark Knight trilogy (2005-2012), Ben Affleck in the DC Extended Universe (2016-2023), and Robert Pattinson in The Batman (2022). Kevin Conroy, Diedrich Bader, Jensen Ackles, Troy Baker, and Will Arnett, among others, have provided the character's voice.

In all honesty, I think the logic behind Batman forgiving Jason has by far the simplest explanation when you boil things down to the basics. Bruce knows it's technically his fault Red Hood ended up the way he is, so treating him any harsher than necessary would just make Bats a hypocrite.

My second favorite superhero behind the Wall Crawler. Batman's morals are complicated we must keep in mind he's a man who suffers from severe PTSD due to experiencing his beloved parents deaths at such a young age he's a broken man scared by loss, and hatred for all criminals so his morals are tough to completely understand we must remember he's not completely sane, and he knows it.

what loads of Modern humans got or need to realise, comprehend and understand is that those concepts such as 'morality' 'normal' are all derogatory and allegorical concepts which in one of the definitions of 'allegory' is made to generalise the human existence to something that can arise as being deemed 'better' or somewhere in that notion despite that never being the case, since you can't determine those concepts in 'actuality' which are paradoxical by nature within Human Nature itself... these concepts only came in to make a focal point in regards to the Modern Era of humans to apparently give 'meaning' despite, it only convolutes things about Humanity and controls ppl...

Is it though? It's a pretty ironic in any fiction for a character to not believe in a creator, seeing as they were you know, created. So for batman to have that mindset is pretty stupid when he exists in a world like his and is a created individual, it just comes off as dumb and edgy to the point of cringe.
@lorddraonic
@lorddraonic Жыл бұрын
So creating a story that reflects some opinions and views people have in the real world is stupid???? That logic does not apply because to the day to day structure and logic of the comic book world, the fact they are stories and created by writers isn't an aspect that holds any weight in those stories, particularly Batman's. It's the characters assumption, and the reader, that the story they are in and we are reading, to the characters, is real to them and is their reality. We're basically "pearing in to their world." There are some forth wall breaking comic storylines, characters, and concepts that account for the writers being God's but those are not weight into the overarching stories, themes, and concepts of the main line stories within comics. Like Deadpool interactions with the writers doesn't effect the over all story of Marvel comic series. You can view the Gods of comic multiverses like the One Above All and The Presence as the writers but to the characters and their world's, there just that, God, nothing else. You can't take the illogical leap of applying your understanding of perception of the world to a character that is in a completely different situation, understanding, and most importantly, perspective. You HAVE to consider a characters actions, ideals, and beliefs within the context of their story. Of course those do reflect on the real world and vice-versa but a character is in the world ultimately so however they view it and understand it is just that, their view and understanding.

@acewmd. Some characters in whatever story they're gonna be are gonna be atheistic, simply because it's just a belief people have sometimes. If you look at Batman, his story, his attitude, his ideals, etc it can make some logical sense be might be an atheist. It can also be equally possible for him to not be. I don't think it's an edgy choice, looking at his character and the way he is and acts it doesn't surprise me at all that he is and it fits pretty neatly

So batman being a non believer makes no sense other than to add edge to him, he was made, denying it seems stupid and writing him to not believe he was is edgy for the sake of edge.

Batman refusing to kill even the joker because of the irreparable destruction it would bring to his ability to inspire hope and faith in a better tomorrow is INFINITELY better than “if I killed the joker I would be just as bad as him and the man who killed my parents” could ever be in terms of logic. And the idea that batman “wouldnt stop” killing people if he did that doesn’t work because batman does not exist in a vacuum, superman and even a number of other JL members would absolutely be there and stop him once he starts going too far. Hell there is already a story where he does exactly that and Big Jim Goatdon is the one to put him away himself. Thats actually a really cool idea honestly

Do you think what plays a role in why Batman defines Lex as "more evil" is that Lex is smarter, more mentally stable & overall his actions are for a more selfish reason? There's also the fact that he may feel partially responsible for the creation of the Joker, considering one of his origins somewhat causes his existence. Because I thought I would hear something like that from the video.
@CRISIS_COMICS
@CRISIS_COMICS Жыл бұрын
He says that Luthor has caused more harm to the world. I’d say he influences a greater overall degradation of society; it’s a mass murder vs a 1%, smarter than Bruce Wayne, industrialist who could fund the Joker’s acts 1,000,000 times over. Killing Joke shows that Batman and Joker are parallels as far as their families’ deaths defining them, so to kill Joker specifically would logically prove to Batman that he’s not capable of having faced that trauma without devolving into a murderer. I think faith and forgiveness is at the core of Bruce’s character, and that extends to even the Joker.

I think from all my research about this topic, I have found 2 main reasons for his no kill rule. 1. MORAL REASON: Batman believes that anyone can be redeemed, and he doesn't want to take that choice away from his enemies. Killing them will also affect others who love that person. It can ruin lives and families. He doesn't want someone to go through what he did with his own parents. He fears making another Batman. Pretty much he wants to stop or prevent the cycle of hatred. 2. PERSONAL REASON: Batman is scared of himself and what he is capable of. He doesn't trust himself enough to decide when he should cross that line. Bruce has a lot of built-up trauma and darkness within himself that he holds back. He has looked into himself and understands his own darkness. He fears that if he crosses that line, he won't be able to stop himself from crossing it again. That each time he does it, he will start to edge closer into a dark version of himself that will go too far. It's actually less so a "no kill rule" and more like a "don't lean too far into your own darkness rule." I think the nuance of Batman's relationship with killing is seen easier when comparing it with another hero. Superman. Both Batman and Superman have pretty similar morality reasons on why they do everything in their power before they resort to killing. But it's the difference in their internal struggles, flaws, and mental state that make their decision-making in conjunction with those morals different. Superman overall believes that he is a good person and trusts himself enough to make the right choice. When he decides that killing is the best option, he trusts that he's doing it for the right reason and knows that he will still be the good person he knows he is afterward. Batman doesn't trust himself like Superman does. Bruce constantly has an internal struggle with himself. He has a hidden darkness that will come out when unchecked. He believes that if he isn't careful, he could take the wrong steps and become something else. Something he would regret. So, while he doesn't want to kill in order to do the right thing, he also fears killing for the wrong reason. If he feels all of his anger and hatred start to come out, he holds it back. That's why he doesn't kill someone who's even more evil than the rest like Joker. The more he wants to, the more he holds himself back. He can't risk letting himself break. So he holds himself back from that option more than Superman does. They have both killed before. They know that, while it's the undesirable outcome, it can be the only option in order to save others. But only Batman has turned it into a rule for himself. You only make rules when you have to hold someone back from doing the wrong thing. So, in order to help control himself, he has made a mental block to stop himself from going over the edge. So, while sometimes he does kill, he has decided on a fundamental of his persona to guide himself with every time Batman makes a decision. "Batman doesn't kill" This is my interpretation of why Batman has a no kill rule. I think it makes the most sense for his character and is the most compelling reason for his actions. It felt good to write down in order to fully absorb my conclusion to this aspect of Batman. Hopefully it can resonate with others as well to help them in forming their own complete mental image of who Batman is. Maybe others can give me more insight as well. Sorry for making it so long, though 😅
@coco_1002
@coco_1002 Ай бұрын
Very interesting take! I absolutely resonate to the way you rephrased the "no-kill rule" into "don't lean too far into your own darkness rule". I think that really hits the core of Batman´s mindset. It´s easy to criticize Batman for not killing the Joker but truly trying to understand why he doesn´t and what his reasoning behind his actions is, that´s the challenging but definitely necessary part of understanding Batman as the complex character he is. We have to keep in mind that killing or letting die is always a choice. Batman is absolutely capable of killing the Joker or other villains, but he mostly refuses to do so not just because of the oath he made as a child but rather because he doesn´t trust himself enough to hold back in the future, even if there are better options available. Superman doesn´t have this internal struggle. For the most part, he is in control and trusts his gutfeeling. If it tells him that killing is the best and only options available at that given moment, he wouldn´t hesitate to kill. In some way, this can be considered as a weakness of Superman (since his gutfeeling isn´t always right) but it makes him the character he is. Coming back to Batman: I still believe if it got too personal and someone tried to take down his close ones, he wouldn´t hold back anymore. His patients and will-power have limits and if you intend to challenge them, then you are most definitely screwed for good.

The way how I see it the battle between Batman and joker is of ideology where one bad day can lead a person down a good or bad path and these examples are evident in Cassandra Cain Batgirl and Harley Quinn, with Harley being the result of Joker’s manipulations and a push over the edge. Whereas Cassandra is the opposite where she was raised from birth to be a killer and yet when she first killed someone she ran away with tears in her eyes. I like to think that when Batman makes an exception to his own rule and shoots Darkseid in final crisis it’s a justified killing by his own standards. Batman doesn’t kill people because it would otherwise damage his ability to inspire hope, but also because he believes that everyone deserves a second chance and that they can change for the better. Darkseid, however, cannot and will not ever be changed for the better- he is evil personified, and Batman knows it. @@ryokane558 I guess it depends on the version. Cause I read a comic where Joker invaded Metropolis; Superman straight up said: "I don't have a rule against killing, I just _don't_ kill... I can make an exception for you." This wasn't the injustice version either btw.

Great Vid Crisis! I thought about this when you brought up Bruce’s Dad. I understand why Batman won’t kill but I disagree. As a Christian if the Joker came after my family and I had Batman’s abilities I’d kill him. That doesn’t make me Evil it just means I value the lives of myself and those around me and I’m willing to protect them. “If a thief is caught breaking in at night and is struck a fatal blow, the defender is not guilty of bloodshed; but if it happens after sunrise, the defender is guilty of bloodshed” ~Exodus 22
@CRISIS_COMICS
@CRISIS_COMICS Жыл бұрын
That verse is in reference to the punishment fitting the crime. As in, night is a more dangerous time of day and the defender's chances of survival are offset by the darkness (enduringword.com/bible-commentary/exodus-22/ ). Batman, however, has trained himself thoroughly to always be prepared to every eventuality; and believes that there should always be another way for heroes of his caliber. I only cited Thomas' faith as a single component, and likely a minor one only existing in Bruce's subconscious given his outspoken lack of faith in a conventional higher-power. I'm not saying Batman is a normal person, or has a normal rationale. He views the world through the lens of someone who witnessed one of the worst things you can see at a time when one should be at their happiest. This is how he sees the world, and it's justified in the sense that the books have explained his rationale. Clearly, as I state, he isn't a perfect Christian (or one at all). Obviously his father's faith would influence him, and evidently "though shall not kill" was a big take-away for him.

@@CRISIS_COMICS Nah definitely you’re right in your analysis it just makes me mad sometimes😂🤣. I get why he can’t be the one to do it because he can’t make that call without losing himself on that slippery slope. Also It’s honestly sad to me that fighting against crime for so long has made Batman somewhat lose hope in himself but place all his hope in Dic and Superman.

@@datboimazz Batman (especially Post-Crisis; ie Year One) is one of the earliest examples of a kind of "Dirty Harry" power fantasy. One guy trying to clean up the streets when the system won't; there is a level of cynicism baked in there. He can inspire other's to fix it, but his oath was to "wage war" not "fight for peace".

I believe Batman cherishes life, he values it as the ultimate thing to protect. For everything bad a person has done in their life, no matter how bad they've become, they are capable of being equally if not more good of a person. And I think Batman believes he can share this belief in life with his enemies, as to not just redeem them from evil, but to give their life good.
