My home was built in 1862. Our master bathroom was originally used as a “sick/death/birth” bedroom. I’ve never been bothered by malicious spirits but we definitely have some extra residents hanging around. But I’ve never been afraid in all the years we’ve lived here.

I guess it depends on the house and it's history. Generally speaking I'm fine with ghosts.. their just us.. in spirit form.. and we are spirit in human form.. so in that sense we are family/brothers.. etc.. there's probably actually a lot we can learn from them.. as they us.. but again it depends..

Nothing to fear, they're just "stuck".. I think. I've been curious as to the hows & whys of ghosts for the past 40 years. Haven't found anything to help figure out why I'd witnessed what I saw. I only know that I absolutely had witnessed someone who was no longer "alive". But it has lead me to ask myself numerous questions about what I believe.

Absolutely. It is what you DO NOT SEE that is scarier than actually seeing the ghost. This is much better than the newer one. The scene during which the men are drawn out of the house by what seems to be a dog and the two girls are alone in their room is one of the scariest. The scrabbling sounds seemingly caused by SOMETHING searching along the floor and around the door and then the door being pressed inwards … gah! Also the scene with Nell and the other girl whose name escapes me are sharing confidences is right up there. Nell is speaking and she seems to be holding the other girl’s hand while they are lying in bed in their room. Then suddenly Nell is aware (I forget if she fell asleep) that her bed is now on the opposite wall and she cries out “Whose hand was I holding?” That one gets me every time. Great film.

A bit older adaptation of this exists, made in 1999, starring people like Owen Wilson, Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta-Jones, called just The Haunting. I loved the setting they filmed it in. @@toolongforyoutoread6 yeah the 1963 version in black and white and then in 1978 with Sir Roddy McDowell in the movie Hell House also played homage properly to Shirley’s novel for the most part and equally creepy without the blood and gore that was becoming a founding feature in horror movies at the time but not a staple yet. That year people got one of the creepiest vampire movies ever in Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot. I also think in 1978 people got the original The Shining and Black Christmas and the original Halloween if correct. What a spooky year that was.

"its likely someone has died in the very spot you're in right now" you're right i sleep in the same room where my grandmother died. defs not a haunted spot tho, she passed peacefully after a long happy life, theres no uneasy trauma left behind.

there's more than a few movies based on the novel that Bly Manor is, same way hill house is. Though from what I heard of the turning, it didn't turn out great, and in general, I think Bly Manor was a bit more faithful to the book than some adaptations, even if some things were changed and they tied in another novel by the same author.

"No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone." -- The opening paragraph of "The Haunting of Hill House," by Shirley Jackson.

After watching a bunch of these, I have a few comments that could help make them more watchable. The narrator could talk more slowly and more relaxed - he sounds like he's in a real hurry to end the video. Also, when you're presenting a ton of facts it doesn't hurt to divide the video into subsections with titles, and show the relevant names on screen so it's easier to follow.

Careful where you sit. One night I went with a friend to her friends house. When we walked in I was offered the reclining seat and sat down. Minutes later I felt the coldest cold move through me. It caused me to involuntary jump out of my seat and my body to stiffen for a moment. My friends friend immediately apologized for offering me a seat where his best friend had committed suicide. Apparently they were still there and tried to use my body or something. It was not kosher and I never went back to that house again. My friend never asked me to either. Then later that week I was at another friends house just talking and I felt that same icy cold brush my hand. I was sitting where his Dad had died. Never went back there again either.

Netflix version of this book - Is no way near as frightening as the 1963 movie of Shirley Jacksons book - It uses clever film angles - Close ups of patterns on the wallpaper - Sound/music and rubber doors ! And a clever use of timing - But it's horrific to watch alone at midnight !

Nobody: Ghost: "experts" hauntings are due to severe emotional trauma that occurred there" By that logic then ghosts would appear and haunt the area while the owners who experienced the trauma were still alive. The best version of the Haunting was the 1963 version. The Netflix version is more of a parody of the book. And the remake of the original film is an inferior version. The house used in the 1963 version is a real house. The one used for the remake and also Stephen King's Rose Red is also real but the location is unknown. Look at the 1963 movie, The Haunting and you will see a really scary movie. The others are all rubbish.
