I have zero doubt that a good chunk of why King is so personally against the Kubrick version, is because Jack is him. King has said that in addition to the alcoholism, he was also disturbed by occasional feelings of real anger and resentment towards his young kids, and so the Shining is basically his personal hell. In his version, Jack fights the Stanley harder, and ultimately needs to be killed in order for the hotel to use him to pursue his family. He’s redeemed. In Kubrick, he’s not; in fact, you can almost debate how much the hotel even needed to push. It wouldn’t surprise me if King feels a little violated by that. Kubrick basically made his deeply personal self-insert a monster, and removing most of his moral complexity.
@year-roundkrampus27633 жыл бұрын
I really wish King would separate himself from his work more. Kubrick made a super interesting version of the story thats compelling and focus more on true dangers- the human element. Its people that are scary, not ghosts.

@@dhrgkbqxtjr2743 You don't get what he means- he's not saying he should stop inserting himself into his stories- he's sayin that once they're done don't be so attached to them that you can only see them one way. Kubrick took the story and turned it into something totally different- but that something was every bit as interesting and terrifying as what King wrote. I mean it's fine for King to say he wants a version that holds true to the book but, don't say this version is bad cause that's ridiculous- it's one of the most widely acclaimed, most watched, most loved horror movies ever made.

Kubrick’s version is scarier BECAUSE Jack is the true monster, not the supernatural entities. The hotel simply gives him a push to act on his baser impulses. He’s abusive, manipulative, an addict, and violent. The hotel just amplifies those qualities. Kubrick’s version is ultimately a domestic horror with supernatural trappings.

They took us through the service corridors too which was probably my favorite part. You don't need to spend 500 a night to enjoy this hotel. They let you roam the hotel to a degree, but ask you to not go onto the guests floors to not disturb those in their rooms. The place is massive, and the outside area are fantastic to take in. Living in Colorado, and being a huge fan of Stephen King and the Shining. I’ve been up to the Stanley a few times. One other ghost that wasn’t mentioned was a young 16 year old girl named Lucy who froze to death in the concert hall. She was homeless and was seeking shelter from the below freezing temperatures. Unfortunately, the heat was not on in the concert hall and Lucy froze to death. She’s known to favor girls that have had a troubled past and pregnant women, nothing negative about her she seems to be a kind spirit. There’s also a story behind the twins in the Shining. F.O Stanley’s brother, did have two young girls that have said to been seen around the property. If you ever have a chance to go up to the Stanley definitely do it. If not for the spooky aspect there’s so much history and beauty in that building and Estes Park itself.

I was born and raised in Fort Collins, CO, about 40 minutes from Estes Park. I’ve been to the Stanley more times than I can count. I’m happy you mentioned that the hotel hasn’t really had anything violent or tragic happen. However, I’ve never had a single thing happen to me whenever I’m there. In 2020, Colorado was engulfed in flames for most of the summer. Estes Park and the Stanley would have most likely been partially, or completely destroyed if the mountains hadn’t had gotten about 18 inches of snow. It was frustrating because Colorado received little to no aid for the fires, and I don’t believe many actually new how bad the damage was. Also, you forgot to mention that when King was staying there, he went to get a drink at the bar and was served by a bartender with the last name Lloyd who also did not accept his money.

I got lots of orbs in my pictures when I stayed there. Orbs inside near King’s room and outside in the front of the hotel. My husband and I stayed there and nothing happened to us then but some weird things happened on the tour.

I live about a hour from the Stanley Hotel...I live in Greeley , Co. I've been to the hotel several times since I moved To Colorado in 2007. I've never stayed over night I refuse to pay $500 for a room even their lowest room not haunted costs $99. no way in hell will I pay that much for a room. I have been on their haunted tours.

I stayed here on my honeymoon- and in room 217 no less. 😱 I’m also a paranormal investigator, and recorded the bathroom door shutting itself in the night. The hotel is DEFINITELY haunted, and I’ve never not had a crazy paranormal experience there. I need to go back this year and post what I find to my channel. I highly recommend to anyone who can to check this historical treasure out. Amazing place 👻👻❤️❤️

Even though Steven King disliked Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film adaptation, King did admit it was the most terrifying horror movie he had ever seen.

I actually preferred the shining mini series, found it closer to the book, I also found the latter hotel far more creepy, was like it had a life of it’s own, which makes more sense now, very interesting hearing about King’s inspiration

When I was a child we lived in the Rocky mountains, in a small town in Colorado. It was truly creepy. I spent a lot of time alone. The strong presence of the military made it weirder.

The Stanley Hotel doesn't offer housekeeping while you're there. Only before you check in, and they clean and sanitize after you LEAVE. It's on their website, so that's why it's so shocking.

7:55 The hotel in Yosemite park was definitely the inspiration, but I read that all the interiors were sets constructed in England. This is indeed difficult to believe when watching the film. To get the amount of lighting Kubrick desired through the set windows, the heat from the lights eventually started a fire that burned everything down, and it had to be completely rebuilt.

I’ve stayed there in the cowboy room. The hotel is gorgeous but the rooms are very dated. There is no air conditioning so summer maybe not the best time to go. We went in October. The town of Estes Park is beautiful! Just stunning.

Two years ago, my sister and I took a day trip through some small towns in Colorado. As we passed through Estes Park, I looked to my right and said, “Hey, there’s the Stanley Hotel!” Without missing a beat, my sister replied, “We’re not stopping” and continued driving on. Darn, I was going to suggest we stop for lunch...and maybe some “spirits”. 😎

There was this show on syfy or discovery that was about real people staying the weekend at haunted places, and it was hosted by reputable explorer, and the people were encouraged to explore the locations and one of the episodes was here. And the weirdest thing that happened was they went to the most haunted floor and all of the chairs from the rooms were in the hallways, it was so creepy.

I've read the Shining multiple times. It's one of my all time favorite books. I'm not ashamed to make this admission. The book understands alcoholism so well and I come from a long line of them. I've never read anything so relatable in my life. I understood Jack's descent into madness.

Kubrick’s vision was excellent! I’m not a big fan of movies being too different from the books they are based on, but after seeing just bits of that trash TV mini series King made of his out story, I’ll take Kubrick’s version all day every day. That movie still gives me the willies in my adult life.

I used to work at the Stanley. There were a few little bumps in the night but as a person who is very sensitive to this kind of thing I wouldn't call it one of the most haunted places. Most of these stories have come about since the book and movie came out for the tourists. It's kind of a shame...it's lost some of its dignity in a way. Just to note as well the Stanley was not closed for the winter. This isn't some remote, hard to get to hotel. It remains quite busy during ski season. King may have visited during off peak weeks...between the changing of the leaves and the opening of the ski areas or very late spring.

My aunt and Uncle stayed a few years ago, and got one of the haunted rooms. They said they walked up on the tour right when they were outside their room and the tour guide said, "And that's why we call this room the portal to hell." and it was very awkward to ask them to move so they could go in. The worst thing that happened was my Uncle's glasses went missing and were found in the trash can under the liner
