Buntaro as referred to in the shogun TV show is based of the real life of Hosokawa Tadaoki, a seasoned warrior and man of action. The destiny of influential warlords and the intricate political terrain of Japan's Sengoku era became linked with Tadaoki's life. Despite being at war for nearly his entire life, Tadaoki was one of the most educated people in Japan in this time. Being deeply involved in the creation of weapons and armour, he was also a poet & a painter. Tadaoki's love for battle led him to become a master of martial arts & he even invited the famed Miyamoto Musashi to his court who would spar with his son named Hosokawa Tadatoshi. Tadaoki's life was defined by battles, tragedy, and a love for culture. This is his story.

What I find very disappointing is that almost no people overseas have seen the TV drama "Sekigahara (1981)'', based on Shiba Ryotaro's original work, which was made around the same time as "Shogun (1980)". It may have been uploaded in violation of copyright, but it was recently posted on KZbin with English subtitles. It may not be sold overseas as a video product. Of course, it's a drama, so it's fiction, but the content is closer to historical fact. Mifune Toshiro, who played Toranaga in "Shogun(1980)", appears as the first assistant to Ishida (Ishido). It features all the best actors of the time, and there are battle scenes, so I don't think it will be boring.

@@miroslavterter8452 様(sama) Sorry, but I can barely understand your comment. Is what you saw really the work I commented on? This TV drama "Sekigahara (1981)" is expressed from the perspective of Ishida (Ishido) side, so the impression is that they are right people, and Ieyasu(Toranaga) side is full of evil people who act for gain. However, please accept that the Sengoku daimyo(warlord) of the turbulent times had to resort to dirty tricks of deceit and betrayal in order to protect himself and his vassals and survive. And if you interpret the people who appear in the drama with contradictory words and actions as representing the very essence of human beings, then I think the performance of the drama is not bad compared to this "Shogun (2024)".

Excellent job of telling about the great Hosokawa Tadaoki. It's such a shame that Clevell chose to slander and degrade him in the ridiculous fantasy book and multiple tv series, Shogun. Ironically, his wife, Tama is more famous in the west only because she converted to a western cult religion. Other than that, despite her beauty and intellect, she really never accomplished anything other than dying with honor in Osaka.

During that time, the female figures who are more prominent are Acha no Tsubone (Ieyasu’s concubine), Nene (Hideyoshi’s first wife) and Yodo Dono (Hideyoshi’s concubine whom Ochiba based on). But like you said, none of these ladies are Christian so they got less fame than Gracia but in the grand scheme of things, these three were very crucial in peace negotiations and recruiting armies for their respective team.

@steveokubo5865
@steveokubo5865 Ай бұрын
The character's name, in the FX adaptation, is "Toda Hirokatsu". I believe they said, "Buntaro" is what those close to him call him. Toda Buntaro is the name Clavell gave him in his novel, so his name was likely changed in the effort balance a better authenticity to an actual Japanese name that might have been used during that period and Clavell's novel.

I’m about halfway through the book and I was surprised to see how different Buntaro is in the novel. He is one of the more moral and honorable characters who fiercely loves and protects his wife (again I’m only half way through so I don’t know how it will shape up). In the famous dock scene, he takes advantage of Blackthorn’s aid and attempts to sacrifice himself to save a female samurai, despite the reality that his life was infinitely more “valuable” (obviously not in the modern and respectful view of society, but contemporary to the time and place this culturally this was supprising) to his daimyo’s cause and he could have escaped in her place. I actually thought at first his character might be inspired by Honda Tadakatsu

Tadaoki is more famous for his anecdotes than his history, and is known among modern history buffs as one of the "Four Kings of the Sengoku DQN" (DQN refers to delinquents and insane people). Of the four DQNs, Tadaoki was known to love his wife too much. When his wife Tamako converted to Christianity, he cut off her maid's nose and told her to quit converting to Christianity, slaughtered a gardener who watched Tamako, and during his expedition he said 'If Hideyoshi (Taikoh) invites you, don't go! Never, never, never!' ' and sending her several letters. When his wife Tamako (Garasha) committed suicide during an attack by enemy forces, he placed all responsibility on his eldest son Tadataka and disinherited him in anger. Some anecdotes, such as the gardener incident, may have been used in the drama.
@shuchao6643
@shuchao6643 Ай бұрын
He didn't place all responsibility on his eldest son for that though. He was angry at Tadataka's wife for successfully escaped instead of committing suicide along with rest of the family when the house was attacked, as he had ordered. He was angry at Tadataka for harboring her and his refusal to divorce her. Also to note, Tama did not committ suicide due to her belief and had to have one of Tadaoki's man to take her life instead, which to me was one of the issue I had with Shogun.
@KhangNguyen-yk2rk
@KhangNguyen-yk2rk 26 күн бұрын
Garasha was not commit suicide and she cant, because it would break down her Christianity faith, she actually asked for a favor to her husband's vassal to kill her instead of becoming one of the hostages under Mitsunari's army. It was made many Christian (especially Catholic) angry with Mitsunari and stand with Ieyasu's faction more than Mitsunari

I dont know how much ,,Buntaro'' love his wife in the real live,but in the series ,he was a somewhat of an masagonystic asssholle.He is like an empty vessel ,falow the rules and do what it must and, be brave warior.That is it and yes, he is like some grown up kid,showing some half action attitude towards.....on 3 instances-to Wife-Blacktorn -Toronaga.....So the rest characters can remarck on his existens and,showing them how ''big strong man he is''....Who gives a shit, we all see that ''under his helmet is just pading''.And i am extreemly happy that,Blacktorn show to ,Marico the ''European Subject''..And shy on her turn, put on Buntaro's helm a'' great Stag horns'' and everybody knew about :) ....So he will be remembert in the anals of history as ,Buntaro Boratheon. And in every tea house from Edo to Osaka and beyound,the plebs and nobles alike, will recite poems,about the lenght of his ,,Great Horns''.................................P-S... I highly doubt about his magical escape from Osaka port , from 200 pike man's and god knows how much Samuray in their mist,from an arm's lenght...-Whit the help of some ,Ronnins and his fighting proves-he say.Hmmm which ,Ronnins ?How you out mach and then ,out run 200 solders. And wearin full heavy body armor. ;).. I strongly suspect that ,Ishido is gain a great deal of information about ,Toranaga already and in future ,Buntaro will wissper out more details,from the inner circle of camp ,Toranaga...

When you realized that Buntaro (a guy everyone wants to die) ended up outliving every other character in the show. Tadaoki dying in 1646 means he outlived the first and second Tokugawa shoguns and was only 5 years away from dying at the same time as the third shogun. He’s like Tom Hanks in Green Mile, being “sentenced to live” as a punishment.
