2003 started much stronger. The first episode of Brotherhood speed runs an enormous amount of character introductions and exposition that borders on spoiler territory. Scenes take longer, giving more time for characterization in 2003. It really allowed things to sink in. It had significantly better pacing comparatively. The first 14 episodes of Brotherhood were already adapted in 2003, so they gloss over it. This is my favorite story in all of anime, and it hurts to see them rush it.

@@WolforNuva that's in mythology, in scientific terms a chimera is a mix of two or more animals, look for chimera babies and chimera cats, that's when very early in utero two zygotes fuse into one, so the resulting baby has two different dnas. it happens with people but its more visually obvious in cats where one half of the cat is one color and the other another. so any combinations of two animals if possible would be a chimera, before we were a lot more ethical in science, different animals literally got surgically sown together to see i it would work. and a lot survived for a while but in suffering. there was even a dog who had a second dogs head sown into it, the two headed dog survived, but their quality of life was extremely low. it's honestly depressing.

yesss... we're finally at the Liore episode! this was originally the introductory story beat in the manga, and I went back and read the first two volumes recently! Hiromu Arakawa's artwork is just so aesthetically strong and distinctive... if you have a chance, sometime you should take a look at what the artwork from the manga is like. it's just so energetic and fun to look at... I remember being like 12 years old and just staring at her illustrations for hours. also, I think by putting the Liore chapters first, these events kind of build themselves up more like a good mystery in the manga. tbh, that might be one of the main things that distinguishes Fullmetal Alchemist from other shonen stories in general. like at first, when Ed is reciting the ingredients to a human body, you don't really realize why he'd know that off the cuff like this. you only understand how ominous it is in hindsight, and the whole scene is played a lot more serious, which helps imply that something more is going on there, that we just don't know about yet. a lot of the mysteries in Fullmetal Alchemist are actually preserved because the characters just know things about themselves that they don't have any motive to explain, or incentive to share yet. it gives a greater sense of like... everything's always been like this, you're just new here. it makes the world of Fullmetal Alchemist feel very real and consistent. initially, the boys hear about Cornello doing miracles and seem skeptical, but they don't have a clear idea of what's going on, and at that point neither do we. so even the audience's suspicions of Cornello really aren't so surefire. I mean... you can sometimes almost believe that Cornello thinks he's doing good for this town, and is maybe also being misguided somehow. and Ed just comes off like a total ass in that chapter... I love him so much. seriously, at first it feels like he's doubting these people's religion because he's a spiteful know-it-all who wants to smugly introduce these ignorant townspeople to the concept of "realism" or something. but the more Ed turns out to be right about Cornello, the more you realize what Ed understands about alchemy. it turns out, Ed is just kind of blunt and tactless but his heart is in the right place. and you end up really appreciating that Al is there to help smooth things over socially, whenever Ed ruffles people's feathers. Ed does this a lot in the early chapters too... he's such a little gremlin, and he pisses everybody off, but that's usually a misdirect, so that nobody will pay attention to how much he's plotting to help them, until it's too late. watching Ed try to help people kind of feels like watching someone try to give medicine to a reluctant pet that has realized something's up... the effect Ed has on people is actually way funnier than any written joke in the series. and all the little hints about the Elric family tragedy pile up during this piece of the story. Ed and Al's bodies, and the way they meet Rose and gradually try to dissuade her from believing she can get her boyfriend back... all the talk about god, science, and what is actually safe to put your faith in... it's building up a lot of really interesting questions and ideas. I especially like the theme of skepticism as a double edged sword. a healthy dose of skepticism could save Rose and her town from being duped by Cornello, and having their feelings toyed with. but that same instinct not to trust what you're first told, question authority, and test theories for yourself, is what led to Ed and Al's biggest and most regrettable mistake. it's hard to know which information comes from people with ulterior motives, like Cornello, and which is just knowledge being passed on by people who learned something that they find important, like Ed and Al.
@hadesblaze3623 Жыл бұрын
And also during these first chapters we also see Cornello fooling Rose by providing evidence that he is truly taking the time to bring her boyfriend back and like midway through or towards the end it's revealed that it's a fucking chimera parrot this fucking ugly as hell and scares the shit out of everybody, which I appreciate
@kamuyking551 Жыл бұрын
@@hadesblaze3623 exactly! FMA 2003 and the manga both play up the horror aspects of the story way more than FMAB is capable of with the way it handles itself, and I think it all has to do with respecting the art of suspense. I feel like the source material would give you just enough information to make you _insanely_ curious to know more, and then it would wait just long enough before giving you answers... like, so you could feel satisfied with your ability to think about the information and develop some theories. and it'd layer it so that you were always getting answers at a similar rate to the formation of your follow up questions. it's simultaneously intriguing and satisfying, once it gets it's momentum. and then FMAB takes all of that layered teasing of information and puts it in the more boring order. like, "here's a question and its answer. here's another question and its answer. here's a list of events in chronological order. now you know everything about this part of the story. moving on." when everything used to link up in this complicated web of cause and effect. it flattens it. like, even in the Liore story... in FMA 2003, I liked it way better when Ed and Al were shown walking through the desert and happening upon this town. it succinctly establishes that this town is an oasis in an otherwise harsh location, which the townspeople credit Cornello for achieving. nobody even has to say that part out loud for you to understand it! and I liked that Rose was asked to show Ed and Al the way to the church because everyone in town knows that Rose frequently goes there. I like that she asked the brothers if they were going to make use of the church's traveler's quarters, and Al starts to say no, because he knows how Ed feels about religion... but then Ed cuts him off and says they'd love to stay there, because he's planning to snoop around. Al is literally trying to avoid trouble, while Ed is actively trying to get into more of it. it's just little stuff like that which makes all the difference.

This FMAB world is meant to be a representation of Germany during WW1/WW2. That's why the leader of Amestris' title is "Fuhrer" and several other reasons that will be revealed later in the show. There's also a theme of Amestrians having blonde hair and blue eyes which is what Hitler called the ideal Aryan Race. The themes of this show go pretty in depth. Also, I think why Ed is so focused on obtaining The Philosopher Stone at the beginning is because he believes that's the missing piece of the puzzle to the secret of human transmutation. When Truth showed him all that knowledge in the portal Ed said human transmutation is possible but he was missing something.

6:30 Skin, like other organs, is made of cells, which are basically tiny soap bubbles, full of water, that stick together through molecular magnetism. It's the little carbon compounds floating in the water that give the cell the ability to repair or replicate itself that make it "alive" and allow it to provide specialized functions of each tissue in the body. Certain tissues form long fibers of cells, like muscles, tendons and scar tissue, while the ones in the skin and digestive tract tend to grow out in flat sheets that coat other tissues. This understanding presages a lot of philosophical and semantic debates in the biology community, such as the ongoing argument over whether the chemicals inside are what is truly "alive" and whether things like a virus or a prion, which only perform the functions of the chemicals machine inside the cells of other creatures rather than having cells of their own, can be labeled as a form of "life." 7:45 Ed' playing on her loyalty to get access to Cornello, but he also reveals a lot about himself in the process.

The Chimera is a monster from Greek Mythologie, a Lion with three heads one a normal lion head a second head comes out of its back this one resembles a goat head, a third one is at the end of its tail resembling a snakes head, the word originally was only used for this creature but over time it was extendet to include all creek mythical creatures that are just combinations of different animals. In Fullmetal Alchemist a Chimera is a creature that is made up of multiple different organisms fused together through Alchemy. Makes sense that FMA would take from greek/roman myth as its themes (especially everything arround Truth) are somewhat inspired by the works of great greek and roman phylosophers like Plato.
@hereforonereason5820 Жыл бұрын
A chimera in myth is a creature with the head of a goat and a lion, with a snake for a tail, commonly used to essentially mean many creatures fused together, which is what it is here. Fittingly, the episode which references the Greek myth of Icarus is also the episode that introduces the Greek concept of chimera. This episode is the one to introduce one of many themes of the show, Faith. Faith in God(s), faith in yourself, faith in each other. Cornello only has faith in his own power, as does Rose, who relies on him and her God as her only source of hope, so that when that faith is lost, so is her only hope. Ed & Al meanwhile, they have faith in each other, so when their hope of finding the philosophers stone and restoring their bodies literally crumbles into dust and scatters into the wind, they're able to support each other and renew their hope by their shared strength. It also explores the theme of the dangers and pitfalls of religion, of putting your blind faith in it and relying on it to provide meaning and purpose in your life. How those who find themselves in positions of power in the religion will often do so on purpose, for the sake of acquiring personal power and comfort. On the flip side, it also shows the positives, how religion IS a source of hope for people, it forms the foundations of communities that love and care for each other (to an extent, at least). People with gods or spirits to worship often have their lives imbued with purpose and clarity, the calling to aid their fellow man on behalf of a higher power. It's not all good, and it's not all bad. Cornello may have been using Rose and the rest of his followers, but his sham religion still did give her hope, and a means of pushing forward to tomorrow following her descent into the deepest darkness after the loss of her fiance. It gave her a group of people to fall back on to help, and it got her out of that initial darkness to begin with.

@22:16 I believe the nation of Amestris is roughly equivalent to our own world's Germany in the early 20th century (more specifically the very late 1920s the to very early 1930s, just a few years before World War II) in terms of historical progress, but full range of technological & medical knowledge isn't a perfect match due to the differences in history as well as the presence of Alchemy. For example, Amestris has far more advanced prosthetic limbs in the form of Automail than our world had at the time (in fact we're only just now starting to successfully develop artificial limbs that can be moved directly by the nervous system), yet Amestris also doesn't seem to have any television or airplanes yet either.

They did really well with writing this story, because you piece together the end goal just as fast as the main characters do, even though you technically get given more information. It's really well paced and the characters are so well written. There are two episode coming up that absolutely BROKE the fandom when we first watched this, and I'm excited to see your reaction on them.
@Kyurengo Жыл бұрын
This is the first episode of the story actually, so think that you see it without knowing anything about them. FMAB 1&2 are like that (so rushed) due to FMA. The Elric brothers are genius. They are 15/14, started learning alchemist by themselves 10 years ago and they're quite proficent in martial arts. You'll love them. Al is like Ed, but he didnt saw "the truth" back then so he cant do alchemy without a circle (like the rest of the normal alchemists)

Timeline wise, think around the 1940's or 1950's. Post Industrial Revolution, but before too many major transistor/computer based technologies really matured. One of the reasons for the differences is Alchemy itself. You don't need to invent radically different production and construction methods when you have Alchemy to back up and strengthen existing materials. The big outlier is the Automail technology. Advanced Prosthetics that have capabilities we can't even mimic with our current technology. Some of it could also be attributed to better understanding of the human body and how to connect nerves and such, which may have come from Alchemical studies as well.
@elioalbertopereyra4702 Жыл бұрын
I gotta admit i still wish we could have, even if just, a fraction more of that knowledge about automails/nerves/human body to reach a higher level of prosthetics. We have advanced, sure, but even so we are still ways to go.
@mrmxypltk Жыл бұрын
@@elioalbertopereyra4702 yeah. We have come a very long way, but we're still ages behind where I wish we were in terms of prosthetics. There's even been a couple of horrible cases where people with (admittedly, experimental) prosthetic eyes had to have them removed because the company behind them went out of business/was bought out and would not service them or provide software updates anymore. These people were given some level of sight back, and then just had it taken away because a company wasn't profitable enough. It's sickening and disheartening.

The last episode teaches the Law of Equivalent Exchange; that you cannot make something from nothing. Here, we see the power of a Philosopher's Stone; that it permits you to cheat the law, to some extent. It isn't infinite, it has limits, but it still grants incredible power.

When Ed says a fake stone, he meant at the very least a convincing fake. Imitation might have been the better word, something that can appear to be the original, even performing similar feats, but ultimately doesn't hold up to the legend that wouldn't get used up or break.

Gluttony refers to her as Lust. The first thing he says. You will get clarification somewhat soon on what they mean by the stone being fake. And I wish I could prepare you for this anime, but I don’t think that’s possible. Even if I spoiled the entire thing, you would still be shocked. 😅 Absolutely great series though. And the sub is still notably better than the dub, but I suppose people were right in telling you this is one of the better English dubs.

To answer your question about the weapons and technology, it is stated in the opera (but not in this anime) that we can consider FMA world similar to our world, but meanwhile here we developed science and technology, they developer alchemy first, and then slowly the technology (if you remember, we had "alchemy" in the middle-age). They has the potential to arrive at our same level, but at the moment they're still stuck in a situation that we can locate before our second industrial revolution.

Fullmetal Alchemist is set, in their calendar, in the year 1915 or so. The technological level is meant to reflect the same time period in real life. So the tech you see in this show is all stuff that was around by 1915 in the real world. With the exception of automail, of course.

The time is 1914 (WW1 in our timeline) maybe a bit more advanced thanks to the better material science that alchemy provides. Also, there are two things shown in the intro speech that you should pay close attention to: any time you see red lightning, and alchemist circles that are using pentagons.

If I remember correctly, FMA takes place in an alternative version of our world, where science basically killed off religion hence why Alchemy is so popular and is as powerful as it is, this country being more or less Germany during our WW2 era.
@Alucia0 Жыл бұрын
To answer your question of the time frame. FMA takes place in the early 20th century. Amestris the country that it takes place in is that worlds version of central Europe, the area around Germany to be precise. As for the stone, it's not a fake. It was a real stone I can't explain what happened when it broke without getting into massive spoiler territory though but it was real. Rose is a perfect example of religious indoctrination and what happens when the vail is shattered...Sadly she represents a lot of people in the real world as well :( It's really sad honestly.
@newbie4789 Жыл бұрын
I mean, you are missing where Rose stands. She is a destroyed soul... destroyed by the religious beliefs she was in... Now she don't have anything to believe, not just rely. It's an absolute position of void she is in. We can't blame her

If I’m not wrong this is supposed to be inspired in the time period between ww1 and ww2. And he said is fake because it wasn’t a perfect material, like when in chemistry the teacher would make fake gold; it looks like gold but if you look into it is just look like it. Chimeras also exist IRL, but not to mythological extremes. In nature, it's mostly its the result of zygotes fusing together for one reason or another. Humans are the only species can create chimeras of each other artificially on the regular. If you know someone who received donated blood or tissue, that is a technically a form of chimerism.

it takes place in the 1900s and 1910s, so early twentieth century around the time of the first world war. and aside from automail, pretty much all of their technology lines up with that timeframe. their phones, guns, tanks, trains, and the like are all things we had around that time too. ed's an outlier because hes an emo teen and dresses like it, but you see it reflected in their clothes too

well, shooting at the armor (judiging the armor working as any normal piece of armor, and the gun working as any generic gun) would result in the bullet penetrating the armor in reality. However: this armor is empty (since Al's soul is bound into the armor itself, not a "body" inside the armor). so it woult accomplish nothing and in the most "destructive" case, just puncture a hole into it. So, the result we´ve seen (shooting the helmet off) is rather unrealistic, however: we don´t know how strong the "force" is that holds Al's armor together. But even assuming that all the parts of the armor are barely being hold together by the binding of his soul, it should at least have left a dent, most likely even punctured the helmet regardless. A Chimera is usually an animal composed of two or more genetically different types of species. It derives from the greek mythology, where it is displayed as a fire-spitting beast, Lion in the front, goat in the middle, dragon on the back, that hs been killed by Bellerophon (The hero from greek mythology that also used a Pegasus) On how the "fake" philosopher's stone worked: it´s probably just acting as a "substitute-battery" in order to supply any alchemy done with transmutation-material. Remember: "equivalent exchange" does most likely not necessarily (despite bein stated otherwise) mean "equal mass", but "equal value" (whatever the metric of measuring value is, which would be in line with human transmutation, since it´s always said "but what is the value of a human soul"). So, when he used the ring for his transmutations, he slowly but steadily used up whatever the substitute stored in the ring is, ultimately leading it to breaking (which was probably just a coincidence that it happened in the fight just then)
