Consider the "MD" on the primaries, the sharpness detail. From the HDR wheels, consider it "clarity"

H/V is the horizontal/Vertical ratio, with 0.0 applying only vertical and 1.0 applying only horizontal blurring/sharpening.

Thanks! Very useful stuff. Just kinda veird that DaVinci developers want us sharpen our clips the hard way. They could've just make a button: Sharpen on Edit page. Sharpening is one of the most basic options every editor works with. Q: having so many nodes makes your file heavier and it takes longer to render the video, right? Emagine i have a 3 hour 4K UHD tomeline full of nodes + everything else, it'll take me forever to wait for a video.

Actually I don’t find that the more nodes take longer to render. Usually effects take longer to render out like glow and grain. The nodes themselves don’t make much of a difference, but rather the amount of effects do. Also, I haven’t checked, but if they don’t provide the sharpen effect on the edit page I believe it’s mainly because this is mainly a color grading software, so most of the power comes in the color page. It makes sense to have sharpen there, but it would be useful to have an effect on the edit page as well. The sharpening technique in this video is more for those who want a clean sharpen without having to worry about the possibility of chromatic aberration.

Actually, on the Edit Page, there are three buttons for sharpening: Sharpen, Sharpen Edges, Soften and Sharpen. They exist where there should: In the Effects pane. Double click any one of these options and they will be added to your clip (Disclaimer: I have Studio, not sure if all three are available in the free version).

Hi: I watched this video some time ago and have been using your method, which works well. My question is this: Why did you use the LAB color space rather than the HSL color space? Would the HSL do as good at sharpening as the LAB (assuming one only sharpens on the L channel)? Anyway, thanks for posting. I've bookmarked this for ongoing reference.

this method was created primarily to separate luminance signal and sharpen only on L, just because there is no reason to sharpening chrominance with noise etc. When your goal is to sharpening each channel the same there is no reason to switch between RGB LAB or HSL. Yes you could use HSL if you using it on all channels. You can also stick at RGB. This tutorial makes if he changing all channels equaly. Maths matter

I haven’t tested it, but I’m sure as long as you turn off the corresponding channels the effect will be similar. I forgot to include this footage in the video. If you right click on the node and turn off all channels accept for L it should work. For example, in LAB turn off all channels except channel 1. In HSL, turn off all channels except channel 3. I hope this helps!

@@fujicinema Yes, in theory it should work. But in practice, I found that using the HSL color space to do sharpening will introduce white spot artifacts with even minor changes to the Radius setting. The LAB model seems to work OK though.

@@FlyingAroundOz Thanks for letting me know! That’s really interesting. I wouldn’t have expected that.

lol you change the node to LAB and then what? You only want to sharpen the luminance channel of LAB, so you need to unselect the other 2

Thanks! That’s a good tip. I thought I unselected the two channels but I possibly forgot to show it in the video. Thanks for letting me know!

when I change the color space to LAB it changes the color balancs.....this does not work.

works OK only if done in new mode

Yes you need to apply it to a new node for it to work. Other corrections in the lab setting could offset the colors depending on what's changed. I'm glad it works!

Also I forgot to mention to switch off channels 2 and 3 since the luma channel is the only one that should be affected and not the A & B channel. And yes, my 7 years of experience makes me a noob😎

This makes no difference switching the node the lab, and touching the level number doesnt change anything 95% of the time, we can see on your example that the best result is when you just go back to original settings and that lab doent make a diff
@fujicinema
@fujicinema 2 ай бұрын
Yes putting it into lab doesn’t make a huge difference other than getting rid of chromatic artifacts that could arise. I also forgot to include the footage in the video where you turn off channels 1 & 2 which make the node only affect the luma channel. Personally I only use this technique if I notice chromatic artifact if which like you said rarely happens. This is just an extra tip for those with that problem or who want a cleaner sharpening process.
