This movie was made long before the dominance of "reality television" made it a lot less farfetched and outrageous as it did when it came out. I mean, the ownership of a person from birth throughout their life was and is outrageous and evil, but the idea that a mass audience would watch s guy going about his average life is totally believable in today's world.

The first version of the TV show big brother started being put together in 1997, even though it didn't end up coming together until 1999. So it just barely got out before reality shows, but only because it took a while to get it to screens on TV.

My favorite Jim Carrey movie and perhaps the most significant film in my life. For me the main takeaway is not that he was in a show, people watching him, or the "Big Brother" aspect. Its more grounded in what many people face today in abusive relationships. Gaslighting, threats of harm, emotional abuse, tearing down of dreams, etc. And then we have Truman who fights to overcome all the fears, abuse, even leaves his toxic "family" to become the person he has wanted to be for his entire life. This film is so inspirational.

There is something profound about seeing someone react to a movie like this without having foreknowledge. "Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and good night!" Fun Fact: Ed Harris and Jim Carrey never met during filming. Medical Clue Fact: In an early scene, a bottle of Vitamin D is on Truman and Meryl's kitchen table, needed for those without exposure to the (real) sun. Trumania Nation Fact: The Trumania bits, where Truman draws on the mirror with soap and acts strange, was completely improvised by Jim Carrey. Carrey and Peter Weir initially found working together on set difficult (Carrey's contract gave him the power to demand rewrites), but Weir was impressed with Carrey's improvisational skills, and the two became more interactive.

In 2008 Popular Mechanics named this one of the top ten prophetic science fiction movies of all time. It was released in 1998, just before the big "reality" tv boom in the US. The film was ahead of its time. He showed a dystopia, totalitarianism, whose success and impeccability lies in the support of a large mass of people. And the power of society, as the most important tool for subordinating a person. In fact, the main army of Christoph and his team is not extras, actors and extras of the town, but the AUDIENCE, the spectators of the show. And today it is more relevant than then, at the end of the second millennium. When social networks have penetrated into the PERSONAL life of a person, and they are in no hurry to leave it. Today, people themselves do not think of their lives without posting it on social networks and platforms. In the mode of streams or videos, or photos, access to the personal life of a person is given to a WIDE audience. And people do not even imagine how you can live, so that at the same time OTHER, OUTSIDE people do not watch your life. Not to mention the fact that through all these social networks, resources and platforms, information in whatever format it is submitted and posted becomes available to campaigns and its leaders responsible for these platforms. Not to mention the fact that both the special services and the authorities of the countries calmly and easily have access to this information. What is not to be doubted.

This has been one of my favorite movies since it came out when I was a kid. I've watched it countless times, and to this day, I still notice things I never have before about the world he's in and the way things operate behind the scenes. Its so multi-layered, and there's some really clever lines and details that go over your head unless you're REALLY thinking about it. Like when he first greets Sylvia/Lauren in the library, I always thought she was just being nervously awkward & forgetful - but when Truman says "konnichiwa" because he sees she's studying Japanese, she's actually confused because she's not really studying anything....she's just an extra being paid to look like she's studying. So she looks down at the books and realized "Oh, yeah, I guess I'm 'studying Japanese,' heh". Then he addresses her as "Lauren" and she's confused again, because that ISN'T her name, that's the name of the extra she is playing on a show, who has no speaking parts. She's probably never been addressed as "Lauren" in her life past being assigned the name on a piece of paper. So she looks at the name tag he points to and she's like, "Oh, right.....my 'name'....yeah, 'Lauren'....." Interactions like that seem insignificantly typical the first few times you watch but I eventually realized not a second of film or line of dialogue is wasted in this movie. They thought of EVERYTHING. It's so layered you could watch it for the rest of your life and always find things you never noticed before.

12:14 I like the small detail of the moon being lit wrong, since it should be a sliver of light on the edge. In the shot shown, the sun would have to be closer to the earth than the moon.

This movie came out in a time when trailers didn't spoil a movie with the first 15 second teaser. So when I saw it the first time I was aware that Truman was staged as a reality show but he held didn't know. I just enjoyed the ride. Seeing younger audiences experience it now for the first time is very eye opening. Some don't understand that it's not a new movie and criticise its being "dated" while others don't catch on that Truman's entire life is a movie set.

@@ChichiNaka I've found a couple good ones that are sincere and sharp. One guy spent the first 35-40 years of his life as a dairy farmer in the middle of bugfuck nowhere until recently, so he's seen, like, NO MOVIES in all that time because he just didn't have access. He read a lot of books. Watching his reactions to all the classics has been very enjoyable because you can tell he's not faking it and he's not yapping CONSTANTLY to where he misses half the dialog. I don't care how much footage reactors use, personally, because I've already watched the movies. I'm just interested in seeing their reaction to key moments and endings.

Now that I think about it more, this film came out in an interesting period of "question your given reality" type concept films. Along with the obvious Matrix and Truman Show, there was also Pleasantville and even American Beauty and Falling Down to a degree in their own right. Im sure im forgetting a number of other film examples. Makes me wonder why, what was going on in the mid-late 90s? I was an infant/child so only really know what ive read about the era and I think im missing some nuance. Was the yuppie generation growing dissatisfied in their manicured suburban lives? IDK man buts interesting anyways.
