Ashby Village and Arts & Culture Present: The Trumpiest Time In American History Before Trump:The United States in Upheaval 1917-1921
A Presentation by Adam Hochschild
What if you could be reassured that our current political meltdown is not a new, unstoppable nosedive for American democracy?
That it’s more like a grim rerun that our hidden history shows we can fix to emerge intact and improved?
That’s just what legendary historian, Ashby Village member and popular Arts & Culture speaker Adam Hochschild reveals in his acclaimed, new book American Midnight: The Great War, A Violent Peace & Democracy's Forgotten Crisis.
Adam Hochschild writes frequently about issues of human rights and social justice. The latest of his eleven books is American Midnight: The Great War, a Violent Peace, and Democracy’s Forgotten Crisis. King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror and Heroism in Colonial Africa was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, as was To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918. His Bury the Chains: Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire’s Slaveswas a finalist for the National Book Award and won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the PEN USA Literary Award. He has also written for the New Yorker, the Atlantic, the Nation, and many other magazines, and teaches at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism.

Ashby Village is a vibrant nonprofit that connects members with each other and with the resources we need to stay active, independent and fulfilled. We rely on one another-and on an extensive volunteer pool, screened service providers and partnerships with local agencies, groups and businesses.
Ashby Village launched in 2010 after many discussions and community meetings that began in 2007, initially serving Berkeley, Albany, Kensington, El Cerrito, Emeryville and part of Oakland. In December 2019, Ashby Village expanded to Richmond. July 1, 2020 North Oakland Village merged with Ashby Village.
