I remember when i was a kid in the 70s the sky was cover by them, every direction i look i saw bats flyng. In the 80s i start to see fewer of them and in the 90s they were gone ,millions of velvety bats gone in 20 years. I really miss them and i know that nobody will ever see that again. I feel really lucky that i witnessed that as a kid. I am gratefull for Dr Tuttle for saving millions of bats in these days when the destruction of the planet is extreme to say the least.

I appreciate this video so much. I've just only come to really get to know bats, and they are truly amazing, beautiful creatures. We used to see the bats (micro) come out at dusk, but I've noticed a decrease in sighting during the last couple of years. I credit that to the building of more houses in my area, and a decrease in "housing" for them. I've discussed this with my spouse, and after a good arm twisting (kidding, of course), we've decided to place a couple of bat boxes on our property. As we only have a couple of acres, I figure we can support two in the back of my lot, since there isn't anything there. There are plenty of insects here to support them, since there are still a few farms close by. If they do eat mosquitoes, BINGO - added benefits. I have other plans for further action, but those will be in the (I hope not too distant) future. Thank you again for this wonderfully informative video, I feel like it was much needed.

In CT, USA. We had bats living in our roof. Neighbours came asking to kill them because of rabies. They believed that it is enough to have a bat with you in the same room to catch it. And we are talking about well educated people. Now back in Australia, the problem is a bit different. We cut trees like there is no tomorrow, fires burn what we do not cut, and the heat wave killing them in summer. It's heart breaking to see. We are installing shelters for them and providing them water in summer. But this is too little compare to the magnitude of damage

I remember learning about dr. Merlin Tuttle on The New Yorker magazine, and I already loved bats by then, but his dedication to this sublime animal made me love them even more. I like to think that I have done a small part to help by planting 320 thousand trees from 50 different species of the Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. I like to think maybe I have helped some bats in the process.

This is a great video. Bats are beautiful creatures, no matter what type they are. All are equally as important and amazing. Bats always had a bad rap but now because of this virus, people are hating them even more and even killing them, for something they didn’t even cause. I wish everyone in the world could see this video and realize how amazing bats are and how much we need them. Without them, many people would be dying. These beauties save lives and help the world, and people just don’t see that.

Not only did bats having nothing to do with this "pandemic," the entire premise of viruses being transmitted through the air is a LIE. Viral particles can only be deliberately transmitted through blood via injection. The bat story was used to add a "demonic, vampirish" aspect to the fear.

Bats help control insects in a balanced way and they reduce our need to rely on toxic and harmful pesticides. The solution is to live with wildlife, rather than exterminating everything.

It’s their instincts to survive, and they need food to survive. Some insects, like mosquitoes, can spread diseases to humans, and even other animals. Bats help prevent that by eating thousands of them. Many bat species are endangered too. Bats mainly eat moths and beetles, not all moths and beetles are endangered, and mosquitoes do no good.

Bats are one if my favourite animals. Whenever birding at night, I always look for bat (Or Indian Flying Fox roosting on trees). They are one of the most intriguing to me. But due to lack of reference and bat field guides, never got to know which bat I am seeing (other than 4-5 sp.)

The key I think is to better proof our houses so wildlife can’t get in, but also to be more tolerant of wildlife in their environments. (Like for example, by using less pesticides). For bats, putting up a bat house is a great way to encourage them to move out of your house, but also accepting them nearby at a safe distance :) I recommend BatBnB.com for bat houses :)

I have a question. I have about 50 bats flying around my front yard at night. I assume they are eating bugs I have lots of trees in my front yard, my question is I sit outside at night will these bats bother me or try and bite me? I think there pretty cool looking the way they fly around but I wanna make sure I will not get attacked, so far they have not bothered me i like watching them fly around, just wanna make sure. Hi great question! Bats are very safe to have in your yard. Bats will only bite in self defense if they are grabbed with bare hands, never try touching a wild animal. But having them flying around in your yard is perfectly safe and great for getting rid of mosquitoes and other bugs :)

Hi, great question. Getting rabies from bats is actually really really rare! Worldwide, it’s more likely to get rabies from a dog. The only way you could get it is if a wild animal bites you. Never touch an animal on the ground because if it is on the ground, it is more likely to be sick. Most healthy bats flying around do not have rabies because if they are sick with rabies, they die within a week and research shows that they usually don’t pass it on to the other bats in their colonies. Also while bats fly in patterns that look erratic to us, they are actually quite precise flyers (you’d have to be to catch mosquitoes!) so it is unlikely that they would run into you. It’s safe to have bats in your yard. If you ever did somehow touch a bat, go to the hospital immediately and ask for a rabies shot and you will be ok. Dr Merlin Tuttle told me that you’re more likely to be killed by a dog or your spouse, so if you’re brave enough to get married and own a dog, you shouldn’t worry much about bats. Bats live all around us peacefully without us noticing. I hope this helps :)

A big bat was flying around my basement last night, first time seen inside my Vermont home. Not sure what to do. Now, afraid to enter that space. It flew around the entire basement four times and then, disappeared. Likely hiding in rafters or left thru space it entered. Hmmmm

I’d recommend leaving windows open so it can hopefully get out by itself at night. Keep pets away - cats will try to catch them. Don’t ever touch a wild animal, if you see it again call a wildlife rescue center. :) Hope this helps… MerlinTuttle.org has some good resources as well 👍

channel 13 It does exist today, but only 1-2 people die from it a year in the USA, out of tens of millions. If someone gets bit by any wild animal, they should definitely get a rabies shot. As long as people aren’t handling or coming into direct contact with wild animals, they have little reason to fear. :)

On top of that a rabid bat will exclude themselves far from their colony and others and will die quickly and alone after they are infected with rabies. Even sick bats exclude themselves from the colony until they have recovered. Bats are harmless and are highly valuable. You are far more likely to be bitten by a rabid dog, raccoon or cat. A good rule of thumb is do not ever catch or handle bats especially if they are on the ground. Only trained, vaccinated and licensed individuals should have any contact with a bat. Oh and it is a federal offense to kill a bat or destroy their habitats. Automatic felony per bat. The government has ways to find out. Instead put up a bat house or two about fifteen feet high on a post or pole at the back of your property and enjoy being outside at night and not being raided by tons of mosquitoes and other pesky insects. It's a win win for all.
