Just like with most things or any potential work opportunity, it’s so hard to know to a 100 % what they’re looking for. Then also add how others before and after you have done, and how that’s being viewed by the ones making the decisions. Sometimes the one in the room think you check off all the boxes, but someone higher up decides all of the sudden things should go in another direction, which automatically throws you out of the competition for the spot. Sometimes doing your best and being amazing isn’t doing anything at all (in terms of landing the job/getting accepted). I’m not at all within said industry mentioned, but I study law at uni. and graduated with top grades from high school (no more points to be given because I had reached the end of it). I applied and when I got back the rejection information from the university, I felt gutted and didn’t understand what had happened (lol, I didn’t even apply for more than one specific university, THAT’s how certan I was of getting accepted😂). In my naive mind you got the highest grade and your work was done, I had been so focused on me and what I had done that I forgot to consider that literally thousands of other people had applied as well for the law studies, and only 135 people were accepted. I’m in now and my education plan is back on track, but it’s a good reminder of the reality that not everything is one’s own hands and how we look at things ourselves might not at all be hos others view it, and a big portion is pure dumb luck. My friend is a doctor now and she applied for medical school FIVE times, and her mom applied 10 times. Literally being the best doesn’t always cut it, because many people are the best too (yes, I know the grammar is off, but visually it becomes more clear that way). My point is basically, it’s a good thing to remember when you fall off and beat yourself up, to have in mind that doing your best is not always enough when it’s in the hands of others if you will get approved. It helps with the motivation to keep going to remember that❤

I think some of the most frustrating things about the industry is how you're told you can't book roles because you don't have enough experience, but then through not booking those same roles you're still not gaining any experience. It just feels like sometimes the industry just keeps you stuck in an inescapable position which is so hard to break out of. I think other annoying experiences similar to this, would be when a casting call specifically says they are looking for someone who is relatively new to the industry, so you think you may have a chance, but then you read the cast announcement and the role you auditioned for is being played by an actor who isn't new to the industry at all. Even though you know it's not their fault, you can't help but feel annoyed, because it just feels like nothing is working out.

That and the fact that the industry's dead and slowly deteriorating into a psychotic mess. They keep creating so many mediocrities that nobody really cares about, because they're really made as just a self-insert wank-fest ran by their own agenda that nobody asked for, because what audiences really want is actual entertainment. Yet, when someone does created something genuinely exceptional, it's at the brink of which studios, streaming services, and so much more are losing their audience, which even some who do watch begin wondering, "Why is a show/movie like this being wasted on a platform like this. This deserves way better.".

Going to as many film sets as you can. Getting your name out there as well as learning new skills. This will make your resume even better. Acting rolls will come in because you will get to know these people just because you've worked with them on set. They might just cast you. Idk just from my research.. and I'm not an actor. I'm actor that started in my mid 30's and I'm coming upon my 40th birthday and this resonated so much with me. People always say start young, but it's hard to get a foot in at any age. First, I couldn't find an agent. Then when I found one, I still couldn't book even though I was getting more auditions and better auditions. I'm still struggling. And what's worse is that I'm not even a union actor yet. It sucks. But I've learned to fill my free time with hobbies that I enjoy and stop this 24/7 acting crunch. It seems like the less I care the more things happen for me which is weird. LOL!

as a filmmaker with a lot of actor friends, i see this all the time. these are the people i see crying the most and it breaks my heart how hard it is for some of them. what i keep telling them and what i think ultimately can keep people going is having a true passion for the art. if you've gotten into acting because it seems like an easy job or because you wanna make money quick you're in for a rude awakening, especially nowadays with the general diminishment of the art because of streaming services. as someone who knows the flip side i can confirm that it really isn't about you most of the time. it's about catering to a very specific vision that you either fit into or don't. feeling fulfilled in a job like this really ultimately boils down to how much fire you have within you for the craft. and most importantly, this is true of any job. especially in the beginning. there is constant rejection and hard work, bad days, ungratefulness, diminishing of value, but as long as you want it bad enough it never feels like wasted effort. you just have to keep your eyes fixed on why you're doing it.

If you want to be an actor start with theater as that is where you can learn the trade. Going to auditions all the time and expecting to be noticed by casting is not the way to go. The industry is bursting at the seams with wannabes and trying to get noticed is harder than winning the lottery. I’m an artist, whether it’s painting, drawing, or taking + editing photos, I’m really hard on myself with my work. Like I can’t stop comparing my work to others. I know I shouldn’t be thinking like that, but it’s soo hard when you’re in college majoring in visual arts and design and you get graded SOLELY on how well your art looks. I have a friend who’s super talented and gets all A’s and one of my professors let them move onto the next assignment but when they took one look at my work, they said I had to redo it, and I was so upset about it. I guess it wasn’t “detailed” enough I would think. Yeah it’s just really hard when you get graded on how professional and advanced your art looks.

I’m an actor in New York and this PERFECTLY sums up so much of what I’ve been through. To be fair, I really only started as a professional actor when I was already in my 20s and have been pursuing it for about 5 years now. But I feel like the life has put about 20 years on my soul already. In both a good and a bad way. I love that being an actor and living the life of an actor has challenged me and motivated me to look at life differently. Allowed me to see how fragile and beautiful life is and how it should be celebrated for all of its ugliness. And how I’m then able to put that into my work. But every so often, I can’t help but compare my life to those of people around me both in the industry and out. And I know I shouldn’t do that. It’s not fair to them and it’s not fair to myself. Everyone at the end of the day is on their own path and we’re all works in progress, but it can be a lot when the path to what you want is so long and meandering and you start to question if you’re following it “the right way” or if you should have just settled for that stable life like your family wanted. So I’m so very thankful to you for your video. It means the world that there is a whole tribe of people that’s millions of people strong but still feels intimate, who have been through the same thing.

But every now and then you get those people who are one in a million and get cast with zero prior experience (I’m thinking of Rachel Zegler) in a huge blockbuster film and that sets their whole life up. it’s not a bad thing, but it proves that anything can happen and sometimes people just get really lucky.

I’ve read acting books and watched so many pseudo-inspirational videos from academia trying to sell their classes. I’m staying in sick from work today at my dead end job and it’s crazy that YOUR real ass perspective and tell-all of the industry is actually what inspired me to try again. Your purpose is definitely to create but it’s also to inform and inspire and I think that’s beautiful. I’m some random girl from NJ but I want to try again because of you because you make me feel less alone. Thank you for your videos and I hope you keep making content. And even more so, I hope I bump into you one day. Thank you for sharing your vulnerability in this video.

Makayla, thank you thank you so much for this encouraging video. I moved to LA about a year ago, had a great first start and booked a few gigs, but these last months have been very slow. I’ve always wanted to be an actor, but I had so much discouragement bc people told me it wasn’t a real job and that it’s too hard. I gave up on it until I join my high school theatre club and I realized I could be an actor again but I wanted to take another step further. So I decided to look into auditions for movies but it’s so hard to find auditions. When I finally found backstage thanks to your TikTok you made I was happy. A weight off my shoulder but when I clicked on it I realized there’s much I don’t know about the acting world. I didn’t know what a resume was or a professional photo shoot was or union or nonunion was. I eventually learned because you helped me learn but then when I went to see a role I was interested I was confused because I didn’t know what they wanted me to self record myself doing. Like do we pick any monologue and record ourselves and sent it off. I feel like the acting world doesn’t provide enough information for beginner actors and actresses.

Hi Makayla! i'm a musician and i'm going through the same struggles actors have to deal with but just in music industry (rejections from record labels, from bigger artists etc) but i have a faith in me and enjoying the journey because it is very important to see the slightest progress which means one doesn't get stuck but gets better at craft and improves the approach to handling handicaps and hampers. Currently i'm trying to make the biggest discomfort by moving to the USA, LA...To live a life where I could chase my dreams freely without being japardized by authorities/government forces/police etc is the goal i'm coming to. Have a wonderful day! and I hope to bump into you someday in a sunny LA :)

thank you SO SO much for touching on this. Yes it isn’t “all bad” but this is ourselves getting rejected, this is our vulnerability getting shut down, and more. We have to have thick skin because have to have it. The emotion repercussions do come around though! Right now, I just graduated with my BA in Theater and now I’m turning to film. It’s expanding my horizons in terms of performance and it makes me so excited.

I'm so happy that you made this. I've been following your acting videos since 2021. Because of hollywood I have fallen out of love with the craft that I dreamed about since I was 10. I spent all of the my savings on moving to become an actor. acting school, monthly website fees, headshots, equipment and my favorite GAS. I'm happy that I got the chance to see what it was like otherwise I would've thought about the what-ifs. Hollywood is NEPOTISM, it's about who you know not what you know. When I found out that the industry was accepting tiktokers into sagaftra that was a total slap in the face for people that have talent vs whose hot and whose popular imop. 🤷🏿‍♀️ I decided to do theater in my hometown and write my own monologues.

Ahhhh can we be friends. This is exactly the journey, the feelings, struggles, disappointment and joy that I feel whenever I have to do an audition. I literally have days that I can't put out any self-tape anymore. I have done tons. I have been doing this since I was 19 years old, I'm 42 years now. My biggest passion was to get or win a greencard and go on auditions in LA. I always got so much energy when I was in LA, going to Acting classes. I tried the greencard lottery for 9 years but it not yet happend. I live in The Netherlands, I have booked some commercials here, but they barely ask me for auditions for films or movies. They only work with big names here, so if you don't have a name you don't even get inside the room for a movie or film audition. They only ask me for commercial auditions. I have a side job and give acting classes to youth in school, but my heart wants to be acting full time and I am missing LA everyday❤ Thank you so much for sharing the truth and encouraging us. ❤🙏🏾

Getting your education at school is your primary concern as it is a one time deal and you will never get the chance again. Most movie stars are not real actors they are movie stars. Real acting is about theater so if you want to learn how to be an actor that is where you focus. Start reading books especially the classics and look up some plays and study them as well. You can be an accountant, nurse, carpenter or anything else and still be an actor.

also you are single handedly opening the door that will transform the culture amongst actors today. abundance mindset. we want the same jobs, but we don’t have to allow the industry to stir hate amongst us. by sharing your content openly and freely, you’re basically saying, “i love you and we’re all in this together. i want you to succeed as much as i want to succeed.” that’s HUGE. and extremely powerful. i hope we can all adopt this behavior.

This is EXACTLY the sort of thing I’ve been writing about. Where I’m from, there isn’t a lot of big acting opportunities, so when one comes in, it’s incredibly exciting. There is a community theater in my town, but they mostly audition 18+. I’m not 18. I participate in school theater, but that will only last so long before I have to go out into the real world. Thankfully, I’ve been diversifying my artistic abilities and write and perform standup comedy, so it’s not all doom and gloom.

Go and start your own theater group if you are struggling in your own town. There is bound to be others in a similar position in your locality. I think most people should give it a go if they have a desire for it even if they do not make it. People need to separate out in themselve do they like the idea of stardom or do they want to perfect the craft of acting.

Great video! I'm currently a stage actor in Sacramento with aspirations of getting into film/TV. I'm very blessed to have been booked consistently since 2018, minus like March 2020-Dec 2021 because of the pandemic 😓 But acting just makes me so happy I wish I could get paid a living wage just doing this! I know it's sooo hard out there and every audition I don't hear back from causes some insecurities, but I'm generally pretty good with rejection and know that my role will come too eventually. I found your channel via a link in a casting email for Netflix, so I'd say you're doing pretty good! It's really hard out here, especially since I have to work my actual full time job so I don't have time to really pursue it :/ Good to remember that I'm not the only one

Most people should be trying to get into theater acting and performance as they will have a better opportunity of success in that field and can find out if they are good enough to compete with the best. Learning to project the voice to a room or how to focus on presenting to the audience is something that is hard to achieve in acting workshops. Also incorporating the study of plays and literature would also help to enrich aspiring actors and actresses. .
