While I did benefit of my loan being discharged due to PSLF, I believe the points presented in the clip are valid. Not every career would qualify for PSLF. I think they are warning about how quickly the capitalized interest accumulates and there is always the risk that there might be changes to loan forgiveness terms contingent on changes in administration. The only good prospect of the SAVE plan is the way interest terms are going to be structured. I do think this has been necessary and overdue.

Why do they not act like this isn't an improvement to a predatory system. Preventing interest accrual is a big help to student loan borrowers. Anyone that qualifies for this plan should use it. Yes use it for a debt snowball, and no if you have $0 payments don't pay them down. Invest what you can and if the game changes throw that money immediately at the debt. If someone gives you a 0% interest loan with 0$ payments for x amount of time, there's a giant opportunity cost in paying that down during x amount of time.

Exactly. I dont get why they're bothered by the plan. Zero interest is all you need to hear. Kicking a zero interest can down the road is a good thing! The interest is what makes debt a bad thing. Considering inflation, making tiny or zero dollar payments toward a zero interest loan is actually superior to immediate payoff, because wages slowly inflate over time deflating the relative size of the loan. Zero interest loans are better when longer, not worse. The save plan is super reasonable. Basically perfect.

@@costco_pizza Because the government is absolutely NOT going to forgive anything. The odds of that are beyond slim. Left, right, center, up, down, don't care which side promises it. No one is going to actually make it happen. They don't want to see you kick the can down the road and be worse off. Plus as much as this sucks to hear we are the ones that signed up for it and we are responsible for it. Believe me after paying off a crazy amount of student debt I feel very torn. On one hand I want forgiveness, but on the other I knew what I was doing and it's my problem. And after paying so much of it as much as I don't want people burdened with their student loans a part of me would actually be upset if they're forgiven because I had to pay mine and that's not fair to me. Plus if they're forgiven the money comes from somewhere which will mean transferring the debt to future tax payers. In other words making our kids and grandkids pay them. That's not fair to them.

I'm really glad they finally mentioned how an IDR plan can HELP with the debt payoff journey. Everyone who seeks lower/zero payments does not intend to "Kick the can" down the road in hopes that forgiveness finally kicks in. Lower payments free up money for other smaller debts in the snowball and for general breathing room in the budget for things like, electricity and food, for a lot of people. It's a temp form of relief that can really help in the long run if the true intention is to get out of debt asap.

Except the car loan can be forgiven in bankruptcy. The car can be repossessed if you fall behind, the loan term doesn’t get indefinitely extended. And if things go wrong, it’s off your credit and no longer collectible after the statute of limitations has passed. None of these things are true with federal student loans. They are treated exactly like criminal fines - except criminal fines can usually be settled for 10% or even less during the course of a normal court proceedings, often alleviated in exchange for community service. Whereas the best settlement you can get on federal student loans is 90%, usually requiring an “adversarial hearing” that can cost 10s of thousands in attorney fees - none of which is actually available to student loan borrowers that are actually struggling. Student loans are unique - not because they are so good for the borrower, but because they place the struggling borrower in real, permanent, debt slavery. They are actually treated with less consideration and compassions than criminal fines. And all the student ever did was believe the DOE’s false promises that college loans are the “best investment you can make in your future.” SAVE does NOTHING to prevent this type of exploitation or irresponsible lending. All it does is lower how much the borrower has to pay back. It doesn’t make lending more responsible. And lenders can (and will) still issue $150,000 in debt to art history majors because the government (via tax money) guarantees the lenders will be paid - even tho those borrowers will make on average, $30k/yr after graduation. Meaning their personal debt repayment would be $0/mo for the life of the loan under the new plan… so who’s paying the $150k? Not the colleges who received the money, and not the student borrower… If we return statute of limitations and simple means tested bankruptcy to student loans, you will see the crisis disappear. Colleges would be forced to bring down costs. Lenders would be forced to actually perform proper risk assessment and underwriting before issuing loans, and borrowers would ONLY use bankruptcy as a last resort - in the same way they use it for home foreclosures and car repossessions. We don’t LIKE to go thru the pain of bankruptcy, and it should be painful. It’s simply a way, when all else fails, to not be trapped in destitution. And it should apply to ALL debt.

The issue here is not morality-of-loan-forgiveness or people being lackadaisical and refusing to pay their loans… but rather HOW they will pay their loans and under what plan, whether federal payment plans are better or whether refinancing is better. Private banks are salivating as they stare at desperate student debtors, ready to sweep them up with offers of low-interest-rate-refinancing. But you do that, and you can kiss any SAVE, PAYE, or REPAYE assistance goodbye forever. So if SAVE offers zero interest if minimum payments are made, is that better or worse than refinancing? Because guess what? Students who refinanced with private banks right before the pandemic and student loan interest pause kicked in, and then got laid of? I’m sure some have killed themselves.
@JazzysStyle

It isn't 0% interest. They are preventing them from charging interest on unpaid interest from minimum payments. I just checked my account, and if I want to pay off my loan early instead of 20 years, all of the interest added on for the past 8 days was included in the pay off amount. But yes, you do save on interest charged on interest added to principal each month.
@jeffsbalding1319
@jeffsbalding1319 24 күн бұрын
So how it works. If your minimum payment that you are charged monthly is less than or equal to interest payments alone, the government will pay the equivalent to equal the interest. Your principal will never go up. If you fall under this category of people and they dissolve the program then you effectively make 0 progress on your loan

@GabbyEsq with the save plan its not so much about if you're making payments on time, its more about your income and how much you make per year. It calculates your monthly payment based on income. If you make less than I think 30,000 per year then you don't have to make any payments and you don't have interest either. This is good because then you can take on the debt at your own pace without interest being added on.

@JazzysStyle "The plan eliminates 100% of remaining interest for both subsidized and unsubsidized loans after a scheduled payment is made. If you make your monthly payment, your loan balance won't grow due to unpaid interest." From what I read, if you make under a certain amount per year, which I believe is 30-40k per year, then your monthly payment is 0 so you don't have to make a payment which eliminates the interest. For people making over 40k per year then they have to make the minimum payment, and if they make the payment on time then it eliminates the interest for that month.

The people in this video are clueless. My wife’s normal payment is $584 and it will take 13 years paying $584 a month with interest adding up every month. With the SAVE plan the payment is dropping to $73 a month. So if we pay $584 for 13 years it will cost $91,000. If we pay the $73 a month for 30 years it will cost us $26,000 and no interest. How stupid are the people in this video to not understand that. Even if we paid $73 for 60 years it’s still cheaper and no extra interest. Plus in 10 years that $73 a month will be the costs of a little meal. Lol

As a social worker, my student loan of $72,000 was forgiven in June 2022 after completing 120 payments of $44 monthly. I have been in the receiving end of the relief, but this was a very specific Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program for employees of qualifying NGOs or some areas of the public sector. I am grateful, but I am also very conscious that the SAVE repayment plan doesn’t equal such relief and might just perpetuate indebtedness if not approached strategically to implement the snowball.

That's pretty obvious. But a lot of people qualify for low payments with save. Even $0 payments. I do. Tax information submitted and everything. It's gonna stop my loans from gathering ridiculous interest while I pay my smaller debts off. The income limits for different payment amounts are clearly displayed on the federal aid website. You can pretty well guess what payment you'll end up with. Not to mention the people who are already on an income driven repayment plan. Their payments would likely decrease more under the save plan. So I don't think anyone thinks they get to chose their payment. They probably just have a good guess at what they'll end up having to pay per month.

this game is actually beneficial if, like you said, play it right. What's great about the SAVE program is that if typically your monthly interest on your monthly payment is for example: $170 and your total monthly payment is $230, you will be paying $80 towards your principal balance. On the SAVE program your monthly interest is capped at the same monthly payment you get with your income/household situation. So if on the SAVE program your monthly payment is $20, then that is the total interest they will charge you for that month! and all extra money you add on top of that will be bringing your principal balance down, instead of paying over $100 of interest. This program all it does is caps your monthly interest. So if your payment is literally $0 a month, then anything you pay on top of that you are paying your principal and no interest. Yes, call your loan servicer and find out for yourself. I am a math wiz and it's either this Program or getting a personal low interest loan. However, not many people like me have excellent credit to get those low interest loans. So this program is actually great "if and only if" you make extra payments on top of your regular monthly payment.

Congress and the Senate should introduce a bill to allow people with student loans to be able to sue the colleges who sold them a faulty service. Since Democrats are so concerns about, “working and middle class families need this relief to come as soon as possible. We urge you to continually find ways to use your authority to bring down student debt, address the rising cost of college, and make postsecondary education affordable for all students who choose that path.” This bill will make colleges to be forced to be held accountable and not tax payers for that debt which can make colleges rethink their financial model. I don’t know which committee will be responsible but this should be introduced as when they return to DC.

This is slightly off topic but 5:00 is how a 30 year mortgage should be treated. You go in with a plan to throw a lot of your extra income towards the principal since the monthly payments will be low. Your mortgage can be paid off in 5 years. A coworker of mine approached me and asked how I paid off my mortgage and I told her. She and husband bought a newly constructed house and paid it off in 5 years. My children ar the time were aged 22, 19, 17, and 13. My FFELP loans never saw pandemic forbearance. I agree sometimes an IDR is necessary. From what I have read SAVE is the best approach especially for people doing the avalanche method like myself. The lower the monthly payments that would go toward the interest, the more I can pay towards principal which cuts the head off the snake! So if my minimum monthly is $34 that is going towards INTEREST but anything EXTRA ( say $670) goes towards principal. So that 670-34= $636 going towards me and not straight to the bank's pocket for lending me the loan. I can pay it off faster. The plan isn't intended for lollygaggers but people who are serious about aggressively paying it down but SAVE us from extra interest so the loan doesn't grow as we are trying to chip away at the true loan.

You have to still make the minimum payment otherwise your interest accrues. All this 12 month thing does is those who make no payments won’t be in default and won’t have their credit affected. What I’m seeing is the SAVE program benefits (if you’re paying) start immediately and then the lower amount starts mid-2024. Interest starting accruing 9/1, so if you want to avoid interest accruing, pay the minimums.

@@JCtheComicGeekYou need to make sure the letter said "forgiven" and not that the lender was changed. My student loan was held by Great Lakes and a few months ago it was changed to another company. My credit report stated it had been paid in full but then a few weeks later it showed that an account was opened with the other company. So I still owe the money. The only reason why I knew about the change was because I was on top of all the emails these two lenders were sending me. So I advise you to read that letter again, verify that it actually says the loan was forgiven, and make sure they didn't do what they did with me.

This is perfect for us, we meet the income requirements for family of 5 for $0 payments and no interest accrual. This lets us knock out our smaller debt faster by adding that would be payment to my smallest debt. Then when we get to the student loan we can be gazelle intense on it too but while not having interest accruing. Win win!!!

All the students are being pushed into college while trade schools aren’t even talked about. Add in the immigration policy of the past few years that has sent away most of the skilled immigrants and we have a new construction home waiting 3 month for a licensed electrician to come in and wire the house. I think they key thing that people DO NOT UNDERSTAND is that the next administration can change the laws again, or it could be challenged legally etc., at which point all these people who have NOT been paying and letting their loan balance grow are going to be in a MUCH worse situation. The point I am making is that 10 years is a long time for forgiveness and anything can happen with the laws in the meantime, nothing is guaranteed.

These people are unbelievable. If you have outstanding debt, inflation is probably your best friend as the value of your debt decreases over the next 20 - 30 years. The SAVE plan is amazing if you're PSLF eligible. And it's also amazing if you're struggling to make payments due to your lower income/or due to the high amount you had to borrow to become a general doctor (hint: your PCP is probably not rich) because your INTEREST won't accrue like former income-based plans where even after making $50k in payments, you owe more than you borrowed. Don't listen to these political puppets. Everyone's situation is different and will evolve over time. Rich people have the most debt and they're not rushing to pay more than they have to.

@@amireallythatgrumpy6508 Two statements which are not true. Say you owed your parents $10,000 in 2003 and you repaid them in 2023. The equivalent amount you borrowed in 2003 would be $16,600 today. And if inflation were higher, you would have more of today's dollars to repay "yesterday's" debt. That is why we have interest rates to compensate for the loss of value. Inflation isn't our friend for other items we need today, but regarding debt, it very much is so. And there are over 9 million public sector workers with eligible student loans for PSLF. I think you're not very well informed.

Or we could just restore bankruptcy and statute of limitations to student loans, as it was pre-2005. The same protections these loans had since the 60s, and the same protections exist for all other types of debt… then the people who CAN do what you did, will do it, and those that can’t do what you did can still get relief rather than being stuck in perma-debt. If Donald Trump had been told what students are told about his $900 million casino business that didn’t go how he’d planned, rather than being able to declare bankruptcy, there would be NO Trump dynasty. That woulda been it. And that’s the case for many “successful” people - if they had been unable to find relief in bankruptcy, they never woulda had the successes they became known for.
@amireallythatgrumpy6508
@amireallythatgrumpy6508 10 ай бұрын
Being able to file bankruptcy on student loans is stupid - there is no collateral on the loan, which is how bankruptcy SHOULD work. If you file bankruptcy you should lose the thing that you got the loan for (which is physically impossible for a student loan - they can't take knowledge skills away from you). The fact that bankruptcy no longer works that way just shows how badly America has lost its way. They did in 2005 what they should have done when student loans were first introduced. @@Me-hf4ii

At the end of the day, this is a free lunch. 👍 If you have federal loans it's forgiven after 20-25 years of payments. If you qualify for $0/m it looks like it counts as a payment. Some people might qualify to never have to make a payment and have the entire balance forgiven. 😂 When it's forgiven under this program it's also tax free to the borrower. Imagine sacrificing everything to pay back the federal govt when they're offering to forgive it. 🙄
