I started driving with CRST and was lucky to have a trainer with 20+yrs of experience. He was hard on me and all of his students. Nine out of ten his students left his truck because of his personality. I was probably one of his ten who had the character to withstand his attitude. My last day with him I told him that the way he taught me how to drive a semi was the same way my father taught me to drive a regular car. My trainer broke down in tears and literally told me he finally did his job right. Eleven years later it still hits me. RIP Sargent Marvin.

Great video Ike. You are so right about training. I am a prime driver and have been here 16 years but I have never trained because of the way it's done. I will never have a problem helping a new driver though out on the road at a shipper receiver or truck stop. Hell I still ask for help backing and I've been a professional driver for over 26 years. So weather you are new to driving or a long time veteran of the road please get out and look or ask for help. We are our worst enemy if you don't ask a fellow driver for help. Be safe out here and do it to the best of your ability.

Unless you get a mentor or trainer that just uses you as a logbook. Find a way to get off that truck and onto a good driver’s truck. You’re allowed to interview the mentor as well to make sure they are a good match for you. You as a new driver must have the desire to learn and work hard to achieve your goals.

I work for Schneider as a local intermodal driver and I was taught how to drive and back and turn with a 53' container and also allowed to drive and learn what my mistakes where during training and orientation and as well as how to work with there tablets, I come from the oilfield where its drive to locations, back up straight till about 3 feet of the pumpkin (loading line) hook my hose and ground and turn the pump on, write the ticket, leave it and once the tank was full shut everything down empty the line, pick up the hose and straight to the disposal on some rough and windy roads in the middle of the night with deer playing games of chicken, so from oilfield to intermodal was a whole different thing for me

I got my cdl a in March of this year, 24 years old. I was a yard jockey for fedex thinking I was gonna drive tractor trailers. My driving school instructors said if I can find a roll off job, it's a great first job. I found one near me luckily too cause I live in the middle of nowhere and they trained me on all the equipment. Trash May not be the sexiest thing to haul, but it's the best job I ever had and I don't plan on leaving this company.

The trick to training/mentoring new wannabes is. Do they want to be a driver or an operator. Do they want to learn/listen or do they assume they already know everything and you are wasting every one’s time trying to educate them. Teach them (if they are willing) to not be a steering wheel holder but a serious career minded professional OPERATOR. I learned so much from the “old guys “ when I was coming up. 42 years last month truck operating, and I’m still willing to ask questions and continue to improve my ability regularly. Good language skills and manners are definitely an asset!!

The EPA sent me a letter saying they were going to fine my trucking company $10,000 for animal cruelty. In the explanation it said that my truck doesn’t go fast enough to kill the bugs when it hits them, it is just breaking their little arms and legs as they bounce off and they die suffering on the road.

I drove for Werner back in the late 2000s, and my dispatcher was always bugging me to train and always refused. I had a decent trainer from Minnesota when I was being trained. I refused to train as I preferred driving alone, and at that time, Werner started punishing trainers when prior students would get in accidents when they're were on their own well after training. Many trainers quit as a result.

This is great advice for new drivers. I've been with Schneider since I started driving a bit over 2 years ago. Honestly, they are a fantastic company to start with, the training here was pretty good but not perfect. They will work with you while you learn the ropes. The money is the issue for me, I wish I could stay here forever. Now that I have 2 years I'm looking into something more specialize like local fuel hauling.

Well said Ike. There are 2 categories of truckers. 1) Company, 2) Independence Owner/Operator- Contractors. Company is split in 2, 1) Common Carriers (Schneider, Werner, Swift..etc.), 2) Corporations (Walmart, Tyson, Pepsi, Coke...etc.). Daycab or Sleeper. Independent Owner Operator- Contractors can operate with their own tractor/trailer or lease on to a Common Carrier or Corporation under their own authority. Everything Ike said to start out in the Trucking Industry is a must, it's sucks being a rookie. If you do happen to find the right employer. You will not only build up experience, but go up the pay scale, add bonuses, incentives and awards. You are not your own boss as a company driver, but you can take breaks, listen to your favorite music...etc. Independent Owner Operator/Contractors are their own business/company, so they pay all the bills, unless they are leased on and get some perks, but they become their own boss. I personally don't recommend today's Trucking Industry, because of too much technology in the trucks, such as Elogs & GPS Satellite Systems and especially self-driven or battery operated. And FMCSA controlled. I'm permanently retiring from the trucking industry August 2025 (35 years & 7 months, when it's all said and done). I love my job, I love trucking. But my rookie year 1990 was awesome. International cabovers. Really old school trucking. Hardly any technology in the trucks. Maps & landmarks, most importantly read the signs, especially 13'- 6". 1992 is when the CDL came out. Those were the good old days. Good Luck, God Bless and mostly importantly Drive Safe. Thank you Ike!

When I had passed the HASMAT on the first try the examiner made the comment maybe I should go over to the County MNDOT shed and give lessons, the pothole season was here and most of the crew were on their 4th-5th try. Makes a person wonder what they were dumping and not cleaning up.

I was saving money for Industry Trade School, I wanted to study Diesel Mechanic w/Electrical and Welding, later computer software, be an Mech Tech. In 1992 I got bitten by the truckers bug. I'll be retiring in August 2025 permanently because of too many changes in today's Trucking Industry.

I've always been one hell of a driver and learned to drive a 5 speed and work the clutch at the age of 9. All these years and over half a million miles later and I still drive my first car, so obviously I never crashed it. Anyway I love this channel, and I've always considered getting into trucking, but I became a machinist instead. I just wonder what I've been missing out on. I just retired in April at 60. 30 years as a Teamster truck driver. Lifetime union pension and the union medical is very good. I was fortunate that I was paid for all of my time and not just when the wheels were turning. I never slept in a bed behind the steering wheel. Always slept in my own bed every night. But make no mistake, I knew that I was always a number and meat in the seat. Sure, I knew my manager, supervisor, 30+ drivers and 80+ tank farm/warehouse workers by name and they knew mine. But if I needed anything else, like a new iPhone or any type of technical support, I was always asked for my employee number. It might seem sad but the truth is, no matter where you work or what type of work you do, you're just a number.

On the flip side, mom and pop companies, you're going to deal with a looooooot of drama. We have two dispatchers and one only has her job because the owner is her father in law. Any other company she'd been fired. If there isn't drama, she'll make some. Then one of the drivers--we have 9 including me--he thinks he's a trainer/supervisor/manager. Since I've been here three fists fights broke out with him. But the biggest draw is that nobody gets written up or fired. But in a way that can be a bad thing.

Ike, these carriers, even the small ones, I drive for a small company and we have maybe 20 or 30 trucks, they ALL see drivers as this: $$..... Dollar signs, money-makers. Also, I really don't care if anyone working at the yard gets to me personally, because it's my personal business. But I've been driving for between 11 and 12 years and I've driven for several different companies, never for a major carrier like Swift, Warner, etc. and from what I've gathered over the years, the drivers are NOTHING more than money-makers for ANY company, big or small. We are easily replaceable, you're 100% right about that and we're expendable. 🤷‍♂️

Megacarriers are extended training programs. I was originally going to get my own truck last April (a little over a year) but decided to wait until I have two years that can't be argued against. Almost no one else will hire you during your first two years. I'm not trying to stand out beyond what is necessary to get into the accounts that are relevant to my long term goals. Oh, and megacarrier trucks have annoying, loud, obnoxious tech that sometimes even interfere with the operation of the truck. Can't be helped. With enough time and savings, though, new drivers can become free of that garbage.

They will hold your hand as long as you need and start at a higher pay once you are through training. I think they both pay a flat $500.00 a week during training and it is up to how well you do when you get turned loose. One girl only trained 2 weeks. I got my CDL beforehand and not from company sponsored. I did my 1 year with Schneider working for dollar general. I moved on to smaller companies. Stick to mega carriers for the experience

Mega carriers can be a good deal for drivers when they can keep drivers in dedicated service lanes that run regularly. I started out with Schneider driving P&G Dedicated, since I lived 25 miles from their largest plant. Absolutely great situation for me. 95% or more drop & hook, mostly plant-to-plant and very little northeast US. A lot of good runs to TX, LA, GA and IA with occasional CO and CA trips. Consistent miles and schedule kept me there for almost 10 years until heart problems took me out of the driver's seat. I would have been able and willing to reach 20 year and retirement driving a pumpkin this past December and wish I had been able to,

My problem is, no one tell the whole truth to new drivers. They will speak only sweet words, yet most carriers get irritated that they have high turnover.

New divers should just wait until the driverless software comes out, then buy the software, install it on the big rig, and get all your training from the driverless truck. Not every company can afford this new software so you can always find a job with a company that has less than enuff money to buy the computer driver.

My experience with Swift for trying to get the proper training in a mentorship is after the student hits their 50 hours they really push the mentor to run teams, maybe it was an unlucky lottery roll for that but my mentor's DL really pushed us to do so and my mentor was against it, he recommended super solo so if in an event that was out of our control cause me to run out of HOS he would take over and catch up any lost time however that never happened thankfully. I dunno if all or a lot of companies are that way or not but I can certainly say while I am confident in my abilities even for being new, it was quite a turn off altogether

Depends on what style of driving you like and your lifestyle needs. If you don't mind a lot of stop-and-go driving and unloading at your stops, and need to be home with your family, then yeah local is a better option. OTR is good for those that like longer driving runs and don't mind being away from home for weeks or months at a time. Also, OTR used to pay better but I can't say whether that still stands, as I haven't been CDL since around 1999.

Any trucking company that hires rookie drivers fresh out of CDL school would do themselves a favor by training their driver trainers to train. Dispatchers should be trained on how to dispatch a training truck. Yes, it costs time and money. But so does hiring drivers. And I agree that pushing a training truck into a team operation is not a good idea. A new driver should be exposed to that, but only when that driver is competent enough to solo. The trainer should make that call not the dispatcher. CDL schools should do a better job of letting people know what they are getting into with OTR trucking. And not rely on visiting company recruiters. After CDL school at a community college, I thought I had chosen the right company. I hadn't. Never, and I mean never choose a refer outfit to start with. Learning to work a refrigerated trailer adds to the confusion. And they are noisy. Very noisy. On my first day, I checked in at 7 AM. We waited on a load. And I got to take the tractor find our trailer and hook it up, while the trainer watched. Then we did a few docking exercises. We attended a quarterly safety meeting, and we waited on a load. We went to a class on the new hours of service. My trainer commented that this was going to require 'creative logging.' Red flag! Finally, we got a load. He drove to the pickup point He said he had to prove he could drive a truck. And he told me how to look into cars and what you could see. What the hell is this guy teaching? We got to the pickup point and the load wasn't ready for another five hours. He said to take a nap. Remember the noise thing? No sleeping for me. When we were loaded I got to drive, at night for the first time. I made it three hours before I said no more. I lasted with that trainer for four weeks and another trainer for three before I called it quits with that outfit. The next company gave me a trainer who knew what he was doing and I soloed in ten days. I hope this gives new drivers an idea of what to expect.

I kind of disagree with you when you say that once the training is done, the trainer don't know who you are; I was a trainer with Schneider and one thing I told all my students that if they ever need me for any advise, I would be there for them. During my time, a few of them reached out to me when they found themselves in very sticky situations.

I'm a 5th generation truck driver and I've been out here since 99 when I was 21. Is for starters if you wanna move on to the smaller companies where the real money is at, you are gonna have to get at LEAST 2 year's in OTR. The smaller companies can't touch you till you do. Sorry not sorry I don't make tha rules. And Secondly in that 2 year's you need to decide what type of trucking you wanna do. You wanna run regional where you are home more? Flatbed? Tanker? Doubles? Or do ya wanna run refrigerated from coast to coast like the REAL men do, where you are gone 6 weeks at a time? Thirdly, don't end up on bonehead truckers👌

Just seeing the country through the windshield in places I'd never been was simply so soul-freeing. That moment I swore I'd never work a desk job ever again and I turned down several job offers that would have put me in an office environment.

I noticed the few I got to see a second time couldn't believe that the infomercial and recruiter had lied. Most of them claimed they were to broke to quit. There should be a law against taken advantage of stupid people but if there was nobody would be driving truck.
