Betrimonium chloride leaves the hair feeling slightly silkier in my opinion, whereas the BTMS leaves it feeling slightly more voluminous. So if you want a straightening conditioner, use the Betrimonium chloride and if you need a volume builder, try the BTMS. And if you’re going to include an oil into your conditioner, a tiny bit of coco betaine goes a long way to leaving it squeaky clean. If you want to grow your hair long, you need to experiment until you arrive at a formula that suits your hair. Everyone is different which is why I gave up on store bought products, besides them being expensive. I don’t have split ends anymore. Thanks Marie.

BTMS 25 has been the first conditioning emulsifier I ever purchased. It is quite lovely on the hair, but as I gained more experience, I realized I would've preferred to work with separate materials in regards to the conditioning part and the thickening part, so that I could have more control over them. Therefore I bought behentrimonium chloride and cetearyl alcohol by themselves. Another thing I didn't like about BTMS 25 is that it thickens emulsions very easily even at small percentages, making it impossible to have a milk-like consistency as the end result.

Hi Marie 💖 I accidentally bought Behentrimonium Chloride instead of BTMS 50 , do I need add cetearyl alcohol? ( I have cetyl alcohol and Stearic Asid , can I substitute/ replace with them ?) and how much adding ?
@HumblebeeAndMe2 жыл бұрын
Hi! You will need some sort of fatty thickener to approximate the performance of BTMS 50. It does not have to be cetearyl alcohol; cetyl and/or stearic acid will work. I would start with roughly 50-50. Experiment and have fun, and as always, you can learn more in the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia and the deep dive videos I've done on all three thickeners. Happy making!

Does this stop whipped butters from melting??
@HumblebeeAndMe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alicia! It can be used to increase the melting point of an anhydrous product, but probably wouldn't be first choice if that's the goal. I'd look at an isolated fatty thickener instead, like stearic acid. I did a deep dive on that, too :) Happy making!

So I’m guessing btms-25 isn’t water soluble for those of us who care about that in hair products?

It's an emulsifier, so it will mix/emulsify into water. Cetearyl alcohol isn't water soluble, but the BTMS brings it with it.
