Clutchless shifting on a dirt bike? Shifting gears without a clutch? Here's the truth about clutchless shifting on a dirt bike. After a dirt bike video on changing gears I uploaded a while ago started to gain some traction and some serious outrage about transmission damage etc, I decided to answer some of the questions and go over some points. Don't take this video too seriously. I'm just having some fun with it and I think the video needed a response.

bro im 100% with you. I rarely use the clutch to change gears, when im just cruising i might without knowing but most commonly when riding hard or racing ill just bang gears while on full throttle without using the clutch, with 127 hours of doing that on a 450 it still has no signs of wear. ITS LITERALLY IN THE MANUAL THAT THE CLUTCH IT USED TO "MODULATE THE POWER" not change gear. Amazing video as always man

Had a feeling this video was bound to pop up haha. I was rather fed up with replying to people who wanted to argue why clutchless shifting is bad on a bike when they couldn’t provide any logical conclusion as to why it is necessary to use the clutch while shifting. But you made a great point in this video. Ride your own bike how you want to, shift how you want to. I tried to explain to people that if you don’t use the clutch while shifting, it’s not going to cause any harm. But some people will still argue until they are blue in the face for no other reason than to feel the satisfaction that they are somehow superior in their self-proclaimed knowledge. Can’t please everyone I suppose.

I actually taught myself how to ride a motorcycle using this method at 14 years old because it was hard for me to reach the clutch, so I just happened to try up shifting clutchless and it worked fine and nothing bad ever happened to the few different bikes I rode that way. 😉

Only use the clutch in three scenarios. 1. Shifting into gear from a dead stop. 2. The starting gate. 3. Clutching out of corners.

I agree with you on this, if done properly, clutchless shifting is a breeze and wont damage anything, using clutch excessively wears plates, springs and generates alot of unwanted heat.

I’ve been riding since I was 7 or 8 and I was taught by my dad who was a mechanic to not use clutch while shifting and and downshifting. I’m 44 now and after numerous bikes included dirt bikes and Harley’s I have never had a transmission go bad. I think those people don’t know any better but think they know everything! Lol

When I saw that video I felt that it has to be damaging your transmission to shift without clutch. Same thing as alot of other people were thinking. Instead of commenting though I did some research and it turns out I was wrong. I think the reason is alot of people like me (Who doesnt know exactly how a transmission works) have kind of the same theory about what's going on in the transmission when you're pulling the clutch or changing gears. But the point is we obviously doesnt know how it works and I don't get why some people are trying to argue about something they don't understand until they've done atleast some research.

Great video, been seeing this debate pop up a lot recently as well. Just FYI, MOST cars utilize a transmission with a very different shifting mechanism in the form of a synchromesh. Bikes use a sequential dogbox transmission. Dogbox transmissions are literally designed so you don't always have to use the clutch. It's design is bred from racing and you can 100% shift without the clutch if desired. Cars with a synchromesh (dumbing it down here guys) rely on friction materials to keep the next gears close to speed. If clutchless shifting is done properly, yeah you might not damage the transmission, BUT it's certainly not guaranteed. Very few cars have a dogbox type trans, mostly specialty built race cars. You can easily chew up gears, damage synchros, and bend/break shift forks in a non-dogbox synchro car. There's 100% a proper way to shift clutchless on bikes. 25+years riding, building, racing cars and bikes, former 17yrs Senior Master Ford tech/Roush Certified/Ford GT certified/8rys former Toyota certified/2yrs former Kawi certified.

I totally agree with you. I dont use clutch for past 25 years in supersport , motocross and enduro bikes. Never had a problem with transmition or never had yo replace clutch plates. Its actually benefitial less friction on clutch plates means less heat and less clutch dust floating in the engine oil. If you want to long life of your engine dont use clutch to change gears.

I'm currently building a slider (speedway bike) for my son. You don't have a traditional gear shift because when the bike is crossed up and laid down in the corners, there's no room for your foot. The up shift is spring-loaded on a cable to a handle bar lever separateto the clutch lever. You physically can't use the clutch to shift gears with this set up. All the people arguing with you in the comments just don't know what they're talking about dude. You tried to.teach them but they chose ignorance.
@TFCMods
@TFCMods 5 жыл бұрын
It amazes me how many people think not using your clutch will destroy your clutch.. That's like saying not driving your car will put miles on it. If it's going to destroy anything it's your transmission but it won't destroy it any quicker than if you did use the clutch.. Pulling the clutch and letting off the throttle do exactly the same thing. The transmission will die eventually either way.

Lol about that one person commenting no mechanic would say not to use a clutch. I bought my first bike at 15 it was a 1973 Kawasaki f7 175 and right before I left he yelled “Oh I forgot! Once you get the hang of the RPMS DO NOT USE THE CLUTCH WHEN SHIFTING.” And I’m not saying this was some biased KZbin mechanic either. He was from a smaller town called Galesburg in Michigan.

Now I get this was for dirt bikes more then other bikes. With that said, most factory sportbikes are coming with quick shifters now a days, it doesn't release the clutch for you to shift. They cut the power for a millisecond once the computer senses pressure on the shift rod. Oh and they now auto blip for clutch less down shifts. Dirt vs street, the transmissions are the same style. Stopping and starting and or when ride conditions call for it are the only times you need to use the clutch lever.

Have raced dirtbikes for 4 years. One of my last bikes was a 2014 ktm 150xc. The bike had 400 hours on it. Did two full motor rebuilds in that time with the stock tranny still having 400hrs on it. To this day I do everything by feel. If I’m riding sand when there’s a lot of load on the bike, I’ll slightly pull in the clutch for a split second to let a bit of load off to find a gear (still with the throttle wide open). I’ve never had any transmission problems on my bikes. A a sequential gearbox. Not an H pattern😂

People are funny, it is simple, With rev limiter’s on the new four stroke you can just hold the throttle fully open and put a screw in it so it stays there. Then you can sit with the clutch or without it doesn’t matter you just have to hang on. So it’s really a matter of opinion whether not use the clutch as long as you hold the throttle wide open you just go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go go you can change speeds simply by switching gears faster or slower will depend on your ratios.

R G the transmission on dirt bikes is designed to be that way, most cars like economy vehicles won’t let you do this because the way the transmission is set up. Not using the clutch is faster and easier no matter who you are, and if you’re using a vehicle there are gonna be parts that get damaged over time regardless. After driving thousands and thousands of miles eventually your engine is gonna give up, even if you never beat on it, because that’s just what happens. Whether you’re shifting with or without the clutch on a dirtbike, the transmission is designed specifically so you don’t have to use the clutch. You’re gonna cause damage to the transmission little by little when you use the clutch or not anyway because the clutch is a friction plate, when it collides together it grinds away little by little

The reason I don’t use the clutch isn’t because I know it doesn’t hurt anything, it’s because I suck. Deal with it.

To all the people saying you need the clutch.. You only need the clutch to take off from a stand still start to be fair.. Lol my house mate snapped his clutch cable riding the other day and kept riding all day with no clutch and had no issues. Those people have no clue honestly..

I tend to use four fingers on the clutch when downshifting on my supersport 🤷‍♂️ Nothing wrong with that at all. Having that distribution of force gives me the feeling of having more control of the runout, both in race starts and banging down three or so gears off a straight. Anyway.. first time watching your videos and I'm now a fan. I need more dirt training in my race program and any info is helpful info in one way or another. 🤙

Haven’t had a single person come up with a reasonable scenario where someone has fried their transmission by shifting without the clutch. It’s total bs that you always have to use the clutch. A lot of the pros don’t do it anyways. Really it’s just all preferences of the rider. And it’s my goddamn bike let me do what I want with it for Christ sake! I hate ppl

Good on you for this video 👍🏻…. And good on you coming back on those that obviously don’t quite understand how an motor bike gearbox and clutch works….not expert but an engineer that’s been working on engines and gear boxes for 35 years so seen a bit! But it really not that hard to understand…to change gear it’s all about on loading the gears…and that can be done different ways which you kindly explained very well….and even truck drivers and tractor drivers does it…. I do a bit of it all depending on how and where I am driving.

A 125 will make you an awesome rider but hard to handle. A 250f is a lot easier and smoother for a first time rider. Easy maintenance also

Depends on where your riding. A yz250f is a track bike and is difficult on trails. A yz250fx is great on track and trail. And very easy to ride. Yz250fx would be my choice. Unless you plan to ride mx only.
@michaelcharette5677

Let me be clear. It’s not impossible on trails. Just not as easy especially for a beginner on trails. It will be a rougher ride and more prone to stalling when navigating tight areas.

Since things have gone mainly 4 stroke there's less need for all that clutch feathering. Most racers and hardcore riders I know don't use the clutch for up shifting. Some don't use it for down shifting. These aren't rookies. They're top class riders. But, do you.

You're not wrong about car Transmissions. You just don't know that there's two different types of car transmission. When is called synchromesh it also utilizes Synchro rings that slow the input shaft for easier shifts. The other transmission is unsynchronized like transmission in a road tractors. And just about all heavy equipment. Synchronize Transmissions cannot be shipped without pushing in the clutch. Unsynchronized Transmissions can be shifted if you unload and match RPMs. Speed shifting. The biggest problem between the two is the synchronizers. The synchronizers have to slow the transmission down on a synchronized transmission because of the cut on the gear it's a bevel cut much quieter transmission also. Unsynchronized transmission do not have synchronizers and are straight cut gears much louder Transmissions. You don't want your car to sound like a tractor going down the road this is why you have bevel cut gears with her much quieter and consumers don't like noise or notchy shifting Transmissions. There are some constant mesh car Transmissions that you can skip gears in but it's done in the linkage not inside the transmission. And I believe Formula 1 Transmissions are may just like bike Transmissions I think don't hold me to it
