Me and a buddy went out crappie fishing. He used mono and I used fluorocarbon purposely. I caught 30 crappie and he caught 4. Fishing THE SAME SPOTS with our floats a foot apart ! Explain that for me!

@@tremaineangus6474 There’s a lot of variables that could account for the difference. Maybe the sinking fluorocarbon kept your lure in the strike zone better. I doubt it was the lower visibility that helped since it was crappie.

Braid doesn’t tangle like Mono does, and is much stronger, there really is no reason to use mono for fresh water fishing when you pair braid with the right rod for what you are going after and I don’t have to replace my braid nearly as often as your mono, I’ve had braid that’s lasted 2-3 years before I notices any issues with the line.

I grew up as a kid using just mono. Then I completely stopped fishing for over 30 years. Just recently got back into fishing, and I was both surprised and confused when I discovered so many different types of fishing line. I had never heard of braid or fluorocarbon. I was shocked at the cost of many of these fishing lines. Everyone I knew had their reels spooled with braid. What was even more confusing was when I heard people talking about how I needed to put a "mono backing" if I wanted to spool my reel with braid. I decided to stick with what I grew up using and what I was comfortable with - monofilament. Best decision of my life. Berkely Trilene Big Game is my favorite mono. I spool all of my reels with it as well as use it for my leaders. It's a quality fishing line at a very affordable price.

@@Accyboom I really don't know. I have green on one of my reels and clear on the others. I've caught fish with both, but I couldn't tell you for certain if one catches more than the other. @@Accyboom I'd like to add that the reason I love the Berkley Big Game line is because I often fish in rocky/reef areas, so my tackle occasionally gets stuck in the rocks, and I have to break it off. And it always surprises me how much force I have to apply in order to break Berkley 12# and 15# mono! I've never measured it, but I know for a FACT that I am applying MUCH more than 12 or 15 pounds of pressure to break these lines. They're damn strong lines for such an affordable price! Also, I've noticed that braid is terrible for fishing around rocks/reef. Braid gets frayed quickly.

When I started bass fishing, I used nothing but mono, because that's all there was. I caught a ton of fish on it, be it tournaments, or just out fishing. Then like everyone else, I followed along with all the trends, first braid, then fluoro, then fluoro to braid. Oh, and the connecting knots! Fg, gt, etc. etc. The thing is, I don't remember breaking off fish with mono, but I have lost more fish with braid, fluoro, and the combo. I know with absolute certainty that braid is way more sensitive and fluoro only slightly more than mono. But I seriously have broken off way more with braid and fluoro, which leads me to believe that it ends up being about even between the break offs with braid and fluoro and the missed detections of mono, that the extra cost seems moot. I went back to straight mono on everything and had my best and most enjoyable year of fishing with not one break off. Never going back.

I agree ! My experience with fluoro has been , as others have mentioned , is that it gets brittle and I have had too many break offs. I too went the braid route for awhile until I went to a swimming pool and did my own line test on a texas rigged worm. When people talk about the sensitivity of braid --- it is true on a VERY tight line. However the reality of a fishing a worm or jig is that most strikes come on the fall as you work it. Braid is actually TOO buoyant and with braid, there is a big slack in the line when your worm/jig is falling. Plus, I noticed that when moving/working your worm or jig , the braid would move it 2-3' versus with mono it would only move 12-18" at a time and there wasn't nearly as much of a loop in the line as with the braid. Another revelation was rod length . Like most people I had fallen into the at least 7' long club. That was before the pool test. A 7' rod moved my bait twice as far and fast as a 5 i/2 foot rod ! Final conclusion : I will now use mono and a short rod fishing worms and jigs and I am catching more fish than when I was using braid and a longer rod. The pool test was a real eye opener !!

Kinda new to taking fishing seriously. I just switched from floro to braid for worms and I haven't caught anything since. Obviously I'm inexperienced but I was nailing them with floro. In the pool the braid doesn't stretch moved 2-3', mono that 'stretches more' moved just 12-18". That stretched line at that moment kept the 'loop' less or smaller where as the braid had full length at all times and looped more/longer. On the west coast fishing for Steelhead in real clear mountain water rivers, flouro-leaders are used 90% of the time by exp Steelhead fisherman. The fluoro line is almost invisible and seems not to stretch as much as mono so the hook can sink into the jaw of the fish better but not pull out like if they used all braid. Depending on which brand mono you use, you might miss the hook set if it stretched too much. When float fishing Steelhead, they'll use 50-65lb braid and it'll float more. They'll tie a FG/double uni or Alberto knot to a longer leader or use a small barrel swivel to a shorter flouro leader. Top water striper fishing, also braid to mono. Look around for a deal on braid if you want to top shot it fluro or leader. I wouldn't spool the whole reel with fluoro. There's Red-label Seagaur fluoro $13 for 200 yards

if you want to avoid line twist with mono try this. after i spool the line i get out in the yard, open the bail then pull line out in a straight line across the yard (preferably like 75 yds) then real it back in through your fingers. @Big Daddy Leroy I should have mentioned that the leader was Seaguar fluoro (not floro). 50lb test if I recall. The purpose in my opinion, is that fluorocarbon sinks faster, which is a minor factor. But its low refractive index in water is superior to mono. As the saying goes, the fish can see it (mono) coming). I would not advise spooling up with it. As a leader I had a Grouper(?) on that took me down into rough cover below, probably rocks, and after a 15 minute battle, it threw my hook. The fluoro took a beating. It was scuffed up pretty badly, but persevered. I was impressed with the results I have since using it.

I might buy 500 yards of floral line every couple years but every year I do buy that 1175 yards of big game mono and that’s all I buy and when I get done with it I use it as backing if you do need to use a couple different rods and you take care of them $120 combo from bass pro I’ve had for five years and I’ve caught monsters on it and a monster to me are over 8 pounds and if it’s a catfish it better be over 15 to be a monster but I’m glad I came across this video because I don’t throw a drop shot and I was just looking at things and brother you’re absolutely correct. These people will sell you a dream if they can get at least 5% of people in each state to buy that product of the fishing communities. that’s enough the sponsors are happy and all these people out here that I want to do things and it’s honestly true a lot of things catches the eye of the fisherman not the fish😮

Awesome info! Ive been fishing freshwater/saltwater for 40+ years. Started with mono, I like braid when hauling in big saltwater fish. Fluoro kind of stumped me. I was told it was needed, as a leader with braid, but have used mono in the past with no issues. I can catch fish with a hand line if needed :). Another thing that most of "the professionals" probably wont agree with, I love break down fishing rods. I was a kid, and have kids, how many times has a fishing rod been broken in a car/truck door? 7-9 foot fishing rods, mixed with kids/dogs/ Dads/Moms don't mix well. Break down rods lessen this chance, and I have never had an issue having "less sensitivity" on a break down rod. Keep up the good work! I agree with most of what you said, however there is one major difference between the two that I capitalize on. Fluorocarbon does sink on its own. If you're using topwater lures, this can impact the action of the lure. So for topwater, I fish mono. For sinking lures, I use fluorocarbon. Fluorocarbon also seems to be less visible underwater than mono. The water I generally fish is extremely clear for my neck of the woods, you can see a good 5 or 6 feet to the bottom, and there is a fair amount of fishing pressure. Fluorocarbon gives a slight edge in that regard. That said, if I could only buy one type of line, I'd choose mono. I used it exclusively for years, and it'll do the job!

Good video. Years ago I would fish smallmouth in the Schoolkill River, PA, with a lightweight spinning combo with 6lb. mono. I was pulling 3-5 pound monsters all day long. I did have to PLAY the fish, which to me is a skill. So I wasn't horsing them into shore with that rig, but it was an awesome experience fishing that way. Tournament fishing is about NOT playing the fish, just getting the fish in the boat. Braid and FC makes sense - not putting it down. So now years later I'm getting into FW fishing again. I'm a weekender. I bought close to $50 worth of braid, for two rigs, and I don't really like it, especially for the price. Sure it has it's place and I'm not putting B/FC down, but I'll be spooling everything I fish moving forward with mono, or mono/leader, and I live in FL! Peace y'all...

I got significantly outfished once when we were fishing live alewives in gin clear water for brown trout. I had 10lb mono, my buddy 10lb fluoro. He outfished me like 6 to 2. So maybe there's something to the visibility thing, but more likely just coincidence. That said, in those conditions, I use fluoro, but that's the only time.

I have tried all three. Here is my experiece with them. 1) Flouro breaks easily when you cast hard. When you try to cast with power for distance, you hear that loud snap and the lure flies into the sea. I lost some expensive lures because of Flouro, so I stop using them. 2) Braid is strong and more sensitive than mono but it's also a pain in the ass when knots happen or a backlash. Braid does damage line guides and the roller on the reel, it's really abrasive and it will cut your hand if you try to pull on the line to get the fish into the boat or over the pier. For these reasons, I gave up on braid. Also other fishermen don't like it when you use braid next to them, when lines gets cross, braid can cut other people lines especially if they use mono, again it's abrasive. 3) Mono is the best fishing line in my honest opinion. It's smooth and strong. 15 lb mono is my favorite, plenty strong and still very easily castable. When I handle mono, I don't worry about cutting my hand, I love the feel of mono as it glides on my fingers. I know for sure mono isn't damaging my line guides. And the best part is mono is cheap so you can replace them every season so you always have new fresh lines.

Agreed after fishing with both braided and mono i can confidently say braided is better but the only cons about braid is the price, and if u get 1 little snip in braided line than the braided line is at risk at snapping but it can still fish, and I did stress and pound test, braided 100% wins and it never failed me so far, it’s also very easy to tie knots and doesn’t have spool memory on the line so it can adapt to my reel unlike mono it’s just a mess, as I’m typing this I’m putting mono on one of my reels until this vid pop up L0L 😹

I used to main mono, I still do on lighter gear, but I've found braid to help a lot when it comes to retaining high strength while being more compact and light. I've actually been on a mission the last few years to find the very BEST fishing line...and they all pretty much say the same thing in the product description...that there's is the best. You gotta pay to find out and not all lines are created equally. I use braid as my main line in all situations, ygk upgrade x8, gosen 16 and vicious fishing no-fade braid are the best by far...and I've tried them all. I use a sunline fluorocarbon leader because it stretchs less...like a lot less and u can tell the difference in sensitivity ASTRONOMICALY plus its super strong. In some situations that u need your line to stretch Mono could come in handy but so does a more parabolic bend in ur rod. I haven't used Mono for a while now and that's because I experimented with tons of different lines to find what works best. Yes u can catch fish on Mono all day and twice on Tuesday but if you want to get the very best out of your equipment braid to floro is the way to go. Even with a 6 foot leader the sensitivity is night and day with Mono vs floro but there's so many different products on the market one will never know where the grass is greener unless u pay to find out. But that's just my opinion...

I've found I've increased the number of fish caught using braid to a fluorocarbon leader, rather than using mono. I think the biggest issue between flouro and mono, is how it reflects light in water. Certain fish which get spooked by visible line won't bite mono, but they will fluorocarbon. Most fisherman I know say the same thing. You're entitled to yourn opinion, but briad to fluorocarbon is by far superior.

The suffix monos are just excellent, and I run it on several of my rigs, However, I prefer suffix braid. As for fish being spooked by line, my brother and I are constantly testing. Same lure, same general casting area, I catch just as many fish, usually more than he does, his is mono, mine braid, and my braid is usually a bit towards white from having the dye come off the line from use and/or the sun. Rick's lure looks like it's swimming on it's own with the mono nearly invisible, my line is so obvious even I was wondering why fish would hit it, but they do.

It makes a difference. And it's been proven many times by many people. I fish all types of lines for different scenarios and there are times floro isn't the best and times mono isn't. It's common sense. People that fish weekly and put a lot of time into it can really see and feel the difference. I used to fish mono on crankbaits and my hookups were less I had to have a stiffer rod which in turn was less sensitive. I'm all for fishing what you want and what makes you happy but certain things work better, it's all about improving. Just like using a extra heavy punching rod can be used for cranking and will catch fish but you will loose more fish. It's all common sense if you just think and are not so biased.

Each line is different and each one is better in its own way at certain techniques, like for instance braid is way better for punching thick grass or fishing hollow frogs in thick grass than mono. You did not state the truth or expose lies, you just expressed you opinion on which lines you choose to use. No you don't need the most expensive braid. Also, the leader will catch you more and better fish without giving you too much stretch that keeps you from feeling the fish. But hey, thanks for keeping those of us that do better than the ones that don't and convincing them to stay that way. lol Y'all save your money. We'll catch more fish. :-)

I disagree with this, while there are reasons to use mono advantagously specifically easier top water fishing control and price which I would use it for too. If you like to fish the bottom and deep water contours the sensitivity that braid and even Flouro provides can really make a difference in some scenarios, it's not a must have though clearly like some people may say. There is also the durability of mono vs other types of line and you get what you pay for. I've found mono to become brittle and junk WAY faster than braided line which I've used on rods for an entire season or longer while different types of braid just don't hold up and start bird nesting like crazy, this can happen with Flouro too. Oh and braid casts further as well and you can spool more on a reel. Also, tying a leader lets you break the cheaper line off at the end, be is mono or flouro leader. This also saves you time and money of needless respooling. IMO braided line + mono or flouro leader is the best way to fish and I end up with less stories of how I lost the fish etc. Alternatley a straight flouro or mono setup is actually better in certain scenarios. I suppose I am probably a much more serious fisherman than 90% of people out there thinking about this now.

I use braid because it has zero stretch vs mono which has a ton of stretch. If you’re working plastic in deep water you have to work the rod a hell of a lot more than you would with braid to get the bait to work. And hook set is the same you have to do a bass master hook set to set the hook on a redfish where as braid just a simple pop of the rod does the trick. As far as the flouro, I was actually about to buy a spool of Andy’s mono leader TODAY, but I bought another spool of flouro. Lol. I will be buying a spool of Andy’s mono leader to try it out though I’m tired of the ridiculous price for flouro.

I'm currently trying out yo-zuri hybrid because I got it on sale for dirt cheap. I'm waiting for a little warmer weather so I can go out and catch some fish before I decide how I like it. That being said, my first initial thoughts of the yo-zuri hybrid line from the few outing I've gone on are 1. It comes off the spool smooth and I can cast it a country mile. So that's cool. 2. Rigging up seems difficult. Specifically when rigging up a dropshot. The line isn't very user friendly so far. I'm hoping that'll change as it gets used more but we'll see. And 3. It is a bit fragile, which kind of took me by surprise. I expected it to be more abrasion resistant. I guess I'll see what the future holds.

I made the switch to Yo Zuri and Big Game in 2023. I still have a bunch of fluorocarbon spools that I use on my braid to leader set up's, but this past year I came to the same realization. I stopped spooling entire reels with fluorocarbon and switched to the Yo Zuri Hybrid instead. The only difference is how much money I'm NOT spending on line. I was going through hundreds of dollars of Fluorocarbon every year! Fluorocarbon doesn't go bad, so I'm just using my filler spools for leader line since I have a bunch of it. On my straight mono or copolymer set up's I don't use a fluoro leader. I don't see the need to do so. If I'm tying a Carolina rig or something like that then sure I'll throw a fluorocarbon leader on it since I have years worth of leader line now 🤣It's nice to know I only really need about a dozen bulk spools for the entire year. I get them as I need them, since mono goes bad overtime, but I've spent less than $100 on line this year, which is a major win for me. I was able to invest in some really nice rods and reels this year by really cutting down on unnecessary spending in other fishing areas like wasting money on fluoro or impulse bait purchasing 🥲

I’ve used 4-8lb mono on ultralights as well but I always lost way to many lures on mono. I fish everything creeks, ponds, rivers, lakes, ocean. At the end of the day it comes down to preference, in my experience after you’ve caught a few fish on mono you have to get rid of the section of line you’ve been fishing with because it’s been stretched to much otherwise the line becomes weak and the smallest hang ups will begin costing you rapala’s/spinners. Just my .02 cents

I only use fleuro as leader material to braid! Told that fleuro is invisible to fish as opposed to mono ! I’m not even convinced of that myth ! Mono works great and I’ve been fishing for 67 years! Won quite a few local tournaments on mono lol !

I've caught piles of fish on cheap 6 lb test mono in the saltwater, including large snook, a cobia and plenty of redfish. But lately I've been trying braid because of the extra line capacity and durability. I have rods with mono too. I've never bought fluorocarbon except for a spool of leader and I'm not impressed with it. Maybe it's better for jigs as main line because it sinks but I do fine with what I have. What I need is more time on the water.

Our inshore and surf rigs are cheap braid to mono leader. Never failed us and the casting distance in the wind doesn't hurt either. But, it's always Reaction Tackle braid. Thanks for stopping by!

I've been using reaction tackle braid for 3 years now. Good and inexpensive. The same goes for Big game mono. It's tough stuff.

I used dupont mono 8Ib mono, used Berkley 8Ib on my spinning combo since I was a kid till 3 years I made a switch to Diawa baitcaster and Quantum smoke rod with micro line guides and Quantum smoke S3 baitcaster with 7.3 with Sufix siege mono 10lbs and 14lbs. This line is hard to break on snags. I have broken a 4/0 worm hook before the line would break

@CheekysFishing I don't fishing every day. I the line I have on my reels is about two years old. All the rain we had since June would cover one month of rain. Our rivers are higher than normal by 3 feet

Hadn't fished since I was 35. I'm 60 now and starting again. Mono was all we ever used back then with good results. I do like the braided light test lines for ultralight casting coming off a 1/2" spool without deforming, curling. Sorry if my lingo is out of date but I refuse to update it since we all know that updates can crash an old but perfectly good system... 😉

I agree to a point. You absolutely do not need to break the bank and waste money on fishing line. I use braid on 90% of my stuff. I don't buy the expensive kind. I buy the bass pro xps. It's cheap. I run fluorocarbon on my chatterbait rod. Again, I don't buy expensive fluorocarbon. I just don't. I have yet to loose a fish from a broken line. Now for the really big mind blowing news.... You don't have to drop a huge chunk of money on a rod and real to catch fish. Yeah you need to pair the right rod and reel with the right circumstances, but you don't have to spend a ton of money to do it.

I’ve been fishing PLine CXX 6lb. green for river smallmouth. It’s a copolymer line, tough, great knot strength, low stretch for solid hook sets. No need for a floro leader. I love it.

let's be clear, through a lot of trial i have found that a floro leader is fine but a whole spool of the stuff is garbage. mono is ok but with the memory issues and fraying while fishing structure you will be re-spooling more often than you would have to fishing braid. they all have their positives and negatives, and to each their own but personally i find that braid+blood knot+floro leader is the jam in central GA. straight braid for top water or for punching jigs of course. i no longer use spinning gear after adding a couple BFS reels to the line up, so this is me speaking from a casting perspective. tight lines. good stuff.

This makes a lot of sense. I've caught a good sized 14 inch brown trout on 8 lb monofilament line while doing some night fishing. There really is no need for the other kinds of line as I've seen lots of people using just mono line and having just as much success as with the other lines.

Yeah I remember my brother casted and snagged a tree about ten feet high and 20 yards away with 8 lb Stren. He tightened his drag , straightened his rod all pulled really hard till it snapped and it sounded like a gunshot! I’ll never forget how hard he pulled and how loud it was when it broke. That mono is strong!

On our casting gear -- probably every 3 months but that's just because of retying honestly. Spinning gear gets braid to a mono leader so that's a by year deal. Saltwater stuff every year. Freshwater every 2. (for braid) Braid is nice because you can spool from one reel to another and you basically have brand new braid.
