One of the things about van life that isn't talked about enough is that you cannot get away with whoever you live with. Not even for a minute because there are not multiple rooms. You are in the same few feet at all times. That's going to be a serious challenge for anyone and it can have deadly consequences in a domestically toxic situation like this.
@Catmom-gl5nt7 күн бұрын
@ShepherdsCreek that is an excellent point. My parents have a very small cabin and growing up, there was no TV or any entertainment other than the outdoors, board games, cards, and puzzles. My family always found more than enough to occupy ourselves, but when friends of the family borrowed the place, all they did was as complain. There wasn't anyone around to talk to, there was nothing to do ( which was patently ridiculous), it was too quiet, etc… a small space coupled with bad tempers or lack of patience is a recipe for disaster.

People in DV relationships believe that the person they are with is just not disturbed enough to un-alive them. As someone who works in the court system, I have watched more than one sentencing hearing when the person who un-alived their partner takes the stand and cries real tears about how much they miss the person whose life they ended.....because they do. The perpetrator misses their victim. Now they're alone in addition to being in jeopardy of losing their freedom. If you think another person can't harm you that bad because deep down they really love you, think again. Both can be real. If the way they "love" you is not healthy, mature, and safe, then they can love you in whatever diminished way they are capable of and still be dangerous to your life...Especially when you try to leave them.
@rhondahankins40263 күн бұрын
It really isn’t true that the abused partner doesn’t believe the abuser would ever do away with them. It’s that they know their abuser is very capable, and quite often obviously very willing. The abused is more scared of trying to make that escape and not succeeding, in which case it’s going to be brutal- absolutely brutal for them. It seems easier to remain and to continue to try and appease them and keep them believing how much they are loved and cared about until you know without an inkling of a doubt that you will be able to break away and NOT be found!

Told me it would only take a little tighter squeeze to put us both out of our misery. I finally got away by getting one of my legs out and kicked him on his forehead and escaped. He called the police on me for abusing him. After all he had a mark on his forehead from my boot heel. I was hiding from him until the police showed up. I came out - this was after he told his story. I then told mine and they didn’t believe me because I had no marks . My wrist were a little red that’s all. I was so sure they would believe me until they didn’t and threatened me with arrest for DV. He was so calm and collected. I could barely put a sentence together. I was shaking and crying and so upset . I was let go but I had to leave the residence. I have NEVER trusted cops after that. Oh and the horrible bruises were there by the next morning. My arms and neck was a complete mass of purple and black bruises. But no one there to see or care. It is incredibly common for dv victims to be deemed the aggressor in situations where the cops are called because while they are being hit and grabbed etc, they are trying to defend themselves often using their nails. So while their bruises haven't shown up by the time the cops show up, the attacker has visible signs of scratch marks on them, which makes it appear they were the ones that were wrongly attacked. It happens all the time, which is exactly why police SHOULD have been able to determine that is exactly what happened.

I recall when Gabby was missing that many people automatically assumed that she was the one who was crazy. They believed that she also had just run off and left Brian. Their first instinct was to stick up for him because they naively sympathized with him. These people literally claimed that Gabby was the abuser and they seemed to be under the impression that she was clearly at fault, which made me furious. I could see in the police camera footage that she was crying for help. The fact that she threw herself under the bus to stick up for Brian after witness reports contradicted that she was initially at fault when Brian was seen smacking her around and driving away from her in HER OWN VAN. However, her interaction with the Moab police showed that she was suffering from Stockholm syndrome, and was trying to normalize her toxic relationship. It’s a common occurrence when women feel trapped in abusive situations and are victims of DV. I am reading some of the comments and I’m so relieved to hear that many women were inspired to escape from their own abusers because of this preventable nightmare. No woman should ever experience such unjustifiable treatment by their partners. If Gabby has saved some lives by inspiring others to leave their own irreparable relationships, then her own murder would at least have something positive come out of her heartbreaking tragedy. RIP to Gabby and all women who have died at the hands of a jealous partner. I hope that her family has been able to recover and heal as much as possible, even though this obviously isn’t anything that they’re ever going to get over.

Yeah no. She was the one who should have been arrested that night. Witnesses say she was hitting him. She says she was hitting him. Oh and HE HAD THE MARKS TO PROVE IT. How do we know she wasn't hitting him again, and he snapped? We don't but it is certainly plausible. What this story has shed light on that no one is talking about is how women can commit domestic violence and get away with it. Not only get away with it but will still be viewed as the victim. This narrative that she was this sweet little innocent girl is trash. They were both assholes.

@bradsanders407 You are correct. Domestic violence rates are pretty much even between men and women. Men are just held accountable, and women are not. No one ever claimed that she was perfect, and I would recommend that you learn something about narcissism, and Brian was a narcissist, because narcissists can, and do, drive their partners to behave in ways they normally wouldn’t. And being in such close proximity to a narcissist, and for that length of time is a recipe for disaster. I have a son with mental health issues and I believe Brian had them, based on what you revealed at 13:50. I wish for both of their sakes, they would have cut the adventure short and instead focused on Brian's illness.
@AmberWavesOfSane8 күн бұрын
I knew as soon as I saw the Moab police video, that missing Gabby would be dead by Brian's hand. When females don't say anything, they don't get helped. When they try to get help, and fight back because no one helps them, they get blamed as the cause of the problems. My thoughts are that Gabby, being Gabby, decided she had to tell Brian their relationship was over, she didn't want to be with him anymore, but unfortunately her ingrained social politeness led her to tell Brian that in a remote (private) place, or perhaps around that Jackson, WY restaurant, but she still got back in their vehicle with- out of social politeness. I always felt like Gabby's accomodating personality- the kind of personality we treasure in this society- made her too easy of a victim to a controlling and domestically violent man. Thank you for covering this story in a compassionate and level style, Kyle. I think it's a difficult and painful story, but putting it out there illuminates domestic violence issues, and that's always important.

Please do a story about Sheryl Powell. I've camped in and am familiar with the area where this took place. She was chased by a man wielding a knife in the Grandview Campground area in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains. She fled and then became lost for several days. The story is from July of 2019. My mom was like Abby, she stayed with and kept making excuses for my very abusive stepfather. He was so bad I fled from Michigan to Florida and refused to tell her where I was. I learned from her foolishness to not put up with that type of treatment. I had only one boyfriend that suddenly tried to pull some controlling crap when we were out one night. We were at a bar listening to music and sitting with friends. My best friend's boyfriend was the bartender. I went up to get our drinks and shared a joke with him and we laughed before I returned to the table. My BF got nasty, calling me names and saying I had no right to talk to that man and I was to stay away from him. I said nothing but finished my drink, took my purse and headed towards the bathroom then continued right out the door and left as I had driven us there. I never talked to him again. I have never understood anyone putting up with that kind of crap but then maybe it was because I grew up in a neighborhood of mostly boys and they taught me a lot, treating me like one of them growing up. I resented my mom for years over her putting up with it and I know I shouldn't. I felt sorry for Gabby as she was young and rather naive. As for the reason the case was so wide spread was exactly what you speculated, the social media aspect, that spread it far faster and farther than the traditional news would.

Generally, if someone accepts abuse, it's because they've been abused before at some point; maybe in childhood. When you internalize the idea that YOU are the problem, YOU deserve it, you will stay. Only when you find some shred, some spark of self-worth inside do you realize, "I could deserve better than this. Maybe someone else would love me." It can't just be theory, though, like "oh yeah, I know, I don't deserve this." It has to be inside. For me, what worked was thinking of an alternate universe version of me. Would I judge her for being like I am? Would she deserve compassion? Did she earn the disdain and contempt my ex was giving me? And it finally hit me: no. I had to end it. I had to go.

Well my mum used to say to me "it's ok to make mistakes Michelle, as long as you learn from them. But if you're smart and learn from mine, you won't have to make your own to learn from" And it sounds to me that your mother had a smart daughter. Personally it's something I have never understood either. I have a better understanding as I've gotten older. Of the difficulties a woman has to face trying to leave an abusive husband. I understand the mechanics of how they operate. And how they separate you from loved ones and family. Whilst they wear you down slowly bit by bit. Taking your confidence etc etc. Just like you, it's the getting past the first base part I have difficulty with. And I would have been out the door as well. I do think it would be extremely beneficial for students when they start adolescents in schools to introduce some kind of life lessons. And it's not just about teaching the girls about the boys. We might not be as physically strong. But we can still be nasty pieces of work. And I should know 😲 because I'm one of em. And that's why I choose to live on my own. But try and educate them on the importance of keeping your own identity and maintaining friendships. How to spot red flags. I mean the situation you were in. I think when you are young, it's easy to think. Well he only got jealous because he loves me. Or your out for the night with friends. And he insists on picking you up to get you home "safe" because of all the drunks hanging around whilst you're waiting for a taxi. NO he doesn't! He just wants to make sure your not with anyone else!! The world is moving so fast. We are becoming more openly exposed to things and it's hard to keep up. I have 4 boys that all know how to treat their parents. And they all have loving relationships 🙏 thankfully. I'm also pretty thankful that I never had a daughter... period! Let alone a battered one. I can't imagine how horrific it must be to be the mother of an abused daughter. Or indeed a daughter of the abused mother. And I'm really sorry that you had to go through that.

My view of the world was shattered with my attack, and just remember thinking how evil is so much more common than we think. And it takes strength and courage, coupled with a strong support network to overcome the trauma humans can inflict on one another. If I could do anything, I would buy a large property and bring women (and children) there to HEAL surrounded by nature and love. Empower people to heal and encourage them to pay it forward. Alas, funding is short, but I continue to pursue this idea. Being the change. In the meantime, I have been quite open to speaking to and listening to women with these kinds of traumatic experiences.

She said that the blogger came into her office and flooded her office with tears as she shared her many problems including how her bf/channel partner was cheating on her with many women and their audience thought they were a perfect couple living the perfect life. A few minutes into the session the blogger excused herself, put on some make up and with a bright smile asked the counselor if she would pose for a picture that she needed to share with her followers at a particular time during the session. That story stayed with me and will continue to stay with me. It was terribly sad to see how the officers handled Petito's stop. All the writing were on the wall and the things is that these type of women rather die than to share the problems they have. I strongly believe that many women who allow their abuser to keep doing what they do are the best secret keepers and many will take their secrets to their grave, very sadly and unfortunately. Only she knows when she is really to leave and only God can save their lives. In reference to people who follow bloggers this particular story tell a world of things about who they are.

So, I think you are spot on in your take on the multiple angles here, and I'd like to attempt to TL;DR this down to: Gabby Petito received so much media attention for multiple reasons (undoubtedly her beauty and spirit and the vibe she was projecting was a thing) but her high engagement on social media was 'already' a story that many many folks were following, so it follows that folks who were already invested would continue to be so or even more so once this story took the twists it did. From what I can tell, Kylen Schulte and Crystal Turner weren't popular "influencers" (obviously I could be wrong). Mainstream media didn't have to work hard at all to sell this as a story since it was one that many people were already consuming, and if it bleeds...yeah. My heart goes out to everybody mentioned in this video, as it shows a lot of absolute tragedy often hiding in plain sight.

I think part of why this case went viral was a combination of things. Yes, I feel Gabby being young and pretty played a part but also van life had become a popular topic due to the release of the movie Nomadland a few months earlier. We need to do a better job raising our young people. Girls and boys (but especially girls) need to be taught to stand on their own and not need a relationship to feel whole. Boys (and some girls) need to be taught that they don’t “own” their partner and there is NEVER EVER any reason to lay a hand on them.

Those of us who have been in a relationship with a ‘Brian Laundrie’ all know how confusing, heartbreaking, self image depleting, how sorry they are and you want to believe them when they say “it will never happen again”. You find yourself constantly taking up for them … and the cycle goes on and on and on. My life was threatened every single day for an entire year yet I never once called 911. The relationship is so difficult to explain to others and you love them and don’t want others thinking poorly of them, until you finally can’t take one more abusive cycle. It takes every ounce of strength you have to disengage from them. The mental abuse has imprisoned your mind so completely that breaking free will take everything you’ve got to escape, but once you do life can be beautiful again. Unless you’ve lived it you can’t fathom how awful it actually is. Anyone who says, “just leave” has -0- understanding of what abuse actually is and how hard it is to escape.
