Imagine the divine intervention at play when you're freezing to death in the woods and this random woman comes out of nowhere in the middle of a storm? And she has the supplies and know how to save you? That must've felt profound and miraculous to him. It certainly would have felt that way to me.

So many people feel insignificant and that the world is indifferent to their existence. "John" was a kind soul who put aside his own suicide to keep Pam safe, knowing she'd risk her own life for him. It`s reassuring to know there are caring people out there and America hasn't lost everyone to blind consumerism & greed. As long as there`s unconditional concern for others in need, there's hope for humanity.

If I was at the point of suicide and this happened to me… I could have possibly tricked myself into thinking that she was in fact an Angel, part of my depressive / hypothermic induced hallucinations… Not the Beautiful Soul that is Pam. The human equivalent of an Angel.

What a kind soul, to not run off because you don't want to endanger someone else during your own suicide attempt. John, I hope that you get the help that you deserve. Obviously, Pam is a hero but John did not run away because he did not want her to run after him and potentially die as a result, that speaks of kindness as well.

I think a lot of people don't mean their attempts as much as they think. Most folks don't long term wish to end their lives, they just lost all hope and don't know what else to do. There's certainly people who may know they are so sick or about to become so ill that they do intend to avoid that suffering. But usually suic*de is a permanent solution to temporary problems :(

There's another factor at play here: People have only so much energy and brain power to spend on making choices, completing tasks, and just plain living... EXCEPT when other people are involved and they're doing something to help someone else. John had nothing left beyond the energy to walk where he was sure he'd die. Pam's presence meant that he had someone else to care for and do something for, because she wasn't going to let him die.

@mylittleventures Yikes! It's a sad, cold, little world you live in... isn't it😳
@StealthyNomadica
@StealthyNomadica Ай бұрын
@mylittleventures Consider this: Sit down and write a story about what happened that injured you so badly that you lash out at random people. Find someone in your community who has been hurt like you were. Offer to spend a little time sitting with them and just listening to their story (not telling your own) to help them unload their grief. Kindness costs nothing, gives everything. Most unkindness is a cry for love coupled with a fear of rejection. For those who are hurting so badly that life is unbearable: Take a shower, dress neatly, go buy a bouquet of flowers, go into a crowded area like a shopping center, smile and offer hugs, hand out a flower to people who seem to be struggling, and see how you feel after that. Volunteer for a charity that appeals to you, even just an hour or two, and see how you feel. There is nothing more powerful to get you out of your own negativity and self-pity, then to go help other people less fortunate than you. I pray God's comfort over your pain and I pray He sends you a lantern to light your path because you are here for a reason, and there is only one person on Earth who can carry it out; you.

Unfortunately I lost a friend who hiked up his favourite trail with the same intention. I am so glad that John got a chance to keep living and facing the hard and slow work that is therapy and becoming mentally well. I’ve trudged that path and done the exposure treatments for PTSD, and it is not an easy fix, but it’s very much worth it and doable. Young men die by suicide at scary rates, and this issue needs to be talked about, so thank you. To my man nature pals here, please prioritize your mental health and find the help you need when you’re suffering.

What makes the high male suicide rate even worse is the fact that there's an entire political party/activist movement screaming at young men that they're worthless oppressors and that trying to be men will make them worse and more unforgivable. It's reprehensible at the least.

I hope life for you has gotten to a point where it's comfortable enough that you don't struggle with the weight of feeling like that anymore. You're a brave soul. Sending love from one survivor to another. Pam, if you're reading this - thank you for being a good person, capable of pushing people to do what, for them at the time, is the impossible. You were the right person, at the right time, for John. I can't begin to put into words how amazing a feat your rescue that day was. Fantastic work. Hearing this story has restored my faith in humanity once again. Thank you.

Just felt like saying, you matter too. You’re obviously an empathetic person, despite your own inner battles. That makes it obvious that you are an asset to the world. I’ve been there too, many times. One thing that has saved me, and still does is knowing that I’m not the only one who feels like there’s not much reason to keep going. I realized that, because I know how it feels, I can relate to others in a way that some people can’t, and I’ve literally talked people out of their potential last moments. I genuinely believe that’s because I didn’t just say “Oh, no, you’ll be ok,” but moreso, “I get it, but we can make it better.” Some ppl hear these stories and say “We need more ppl like Pam.” I say I am a Pam, and I want to encourage others to be the same. When you’re busy looking out for others who could simply use some acknowledgment (something some people actually go without for quite some time since everyone’s too busy in their own head with their own problems they don’t even bother to say “hello” to strangers) it makes it hard to think about your own. Because you now have a greater purpose. And that’s what we need to survive : Purpose. So anyway, I still feel “over it” sometimes. Yesterday even, but “we can do it” if not only because there are others out there who need us more than we need to give up. Pardon the novel, but I pray you hold onto hope. (Speaking of “novels”, the Bible gives me a lot of inspiration now too. Sooo many true stories of ppl who had reason to give up but pressed on and now they’re HISTORICAL for their perseverance. 😏) Anyway, Yah bless. Spread the message to be a Pam (or be like Yeshua “Jesus” really. 😉)

Yes when you think about Pam just going for a private hike and having the bad luck to have to rescue someone instead that's one thing. When you think of it as a bizarre coincidence that could be a message from the universe to John what are the odds if you hike up a mountain all by yourself that is otherwise deserted Dressed To Die quickly in a snowstorm and encountering a an extremely experienced and determined rescue specialist who is going to rescue you whether or not you cooperate, and even if it literally takes all day or all night and she might die trying. That is indeed unbelievable luck for John.

Been concussed and burned.. I was a bit brain scrambled and functioning on adrenaline, until I wasn't.. I actually was on my back and vehicles burning around me.. I couldn't move until the adriniline kicked in.. Worked my way out of that by myself... ONLY because of my cave diving training and experience did I make it out of the place NOBODY was coming for me.. NOBODY... Once I worked my way to the edge of the underground building.. This lady actually ripped me over the rails... I'll NEVER blame anyone for not coming in for me.. It was bad unknown things going on.. All on Austin and APD video as it exploded.. Even got slammed on a police cruiser burned seriously badly... 40 something degree that night.. AMLI downtown ATX Feb 1012.. I was so grateful for getting slammed on the hood of the officers cruiser, cuffed like I was a terrorist.. (Again.. All over the news)... The heat on that hood... This is mostly random... However, and I mean this.. I thanked law enforcement... It hank fire department (They actually trump police when it comes to life.. As in, they told APD officers to uncuff me! And then said, we'll cut them off of him!".. Whoever that lady was who ripped me over that railing at the 11.9 th mile, where I was completely gassed and burn pain was starting to rear its head.. I NEVER have been able to locate who she is... Watching videos and all.. Anyway.. There ARE ANGELS out there.. This lady absolutely is one... I judge from afar obviously... No doubt his letter was great.. To show appreciation.... I don't think it is enough though.. I learned to fly full scale helicopters after Travis County STAR Flight brought me to BAMC (now SAMMC) in SATX... NOBODY thought I was going to live... I just for once didn't open my big mouth and inhale.. You cannot skin graft lung anything.. So.. Long winded.. Be mad at yourself if you feel like I wasted your time... I didn't force you. ;). This Lady is both the definition and human version of what a HERO and a Angel is... I'll never say it is easy to let even an enemy bleed out on the "field" (lol... field.. yeah). When things are blowing out your eardrums.. Making your eyes bleed... Simply simply put... If everyone is dead or dying... And, you are completely out of ammo and frags.. You (hopefully) look for other weapons on your way out.. IF you have a fkn brother squaring off with only a knife.. YOU (NOT EVERYONE) RUN and accept the consequences.. That is war kids.. That is ALSO the streets if it comes down to dealing with things... This WOMAN had NO OBLIGATION... NO SUPPORT.. I hope she never runs into this ever again.. I respect whoever she is far more than a lot of people sending and receiving bad news... Figure it out if you don't understand that deliver system and how the "return to sender" notification is returned by howls..

There were TWO brave people on that mountain that day...one who walked to the brink in order to end it all and another who went to the brink to bring someone back to the world of the living. Both had to make the first steps. And keep putting one foot in front of the other. It took bravery for her to go after him, knowing the risks to herself. And bravery for him to follow her back. He probably felt like a coward, and I've been there. I felt that way. Pam, you are a marvelous, strong person. God placed you there that day. 🙏 'John'...if you're reading this, congrats on coming back to the world of the living and going on to get help and living another day, in spite of, and in the face of your demons. God bless you both!

As someone with chronic depression, more than once i tought of fading away on trail. In a place of peace and calm, surronded by nature, to become one with it in a more permanent way. Pam is an angel, like every angel who spoke to me, joked with me, walked with me on trail. Knowing it or not I was saved by them times and times again. "Just one more day on the trail, if I meet someone kind, I'll walk with them" and every time it happened, and I stayed on this trail. I wish I could thank them all.

I'm older, not depressed, but when I think about my eventual end, I often thought I will just drive out into the desert and die among nature.... it does seem so much more peaceful and tranquil than a long lingering hospital stay. Maybe it's a recognition that at some level, we ARE part of nature and just returning to our roots, so to speak. Modern society tends to build walls that encapsulate us and cut us off from that larger sense of the magnificent wonder of the cycle of life.

Thankfully Pam is the kind of person who knows everyone needs someone to care about them at some point in their life.
